This is my playthrough & commentary of the GoldenEye 007 XBLA remake, noting differences, changes, and the impact of this game on the long history of GoldenEye 007 speedrunning for Nintendo 64.
The GoldenEye007 Xbox Live Arcade remake has LEAKED online recently! A truly unbelievable and stunning turn of events. Many knew that Rare were working on a 10th anniversary remaster of GoldenEye 007 for the XBLA (Xbox Live Arcade), but it never made it to market, due to various legal nonsense around the licenses of the James Bond character. However, stunningly, a leaked version of the game made it online, which is mostly completed... and it looks amazing!
In this video, we analyze this incredible gaming moment, examine changes from the original N64 version of GoldenEye, discuss whether this will change everything about speedrunning GoldenEye, and explain some of the techniques & strategies that may need to be altered to achieve incredible records. 10:30 I know why. Dr. Doak was one of the developers of the original Goldeneye. His name was David Doak and he is the actual face of Dr. Doak in the game. He was chosen because among the 12 people working in the game, David had a PHD, so he was an actuall Doctor. The change was made because he is no longer at Rare and all the NPCs have now the faces of the team of developers working on this remaster. Dr. Rakhmanov is the face of Sergey Rakhmanov, another one of Rare's developers who has been at Rare for years and part of the Goldeneye remaster team. His Russian name was probably the reason he was chosen this time around. You can actually see his name on those computer screen with the staff names scrolling.

@@k.pliskin3214 It does. You can still see all the classic faces in every NPC... but the text doesn't change, so it sill says Dr. Rakhmanov, but you see Dr. Doak's face.

@@thiagovidal6137 I've noticed when playing, that some of the NPC's have missing faces when toggling back to the original mode. You can see it at 44:12 too. So maybe not every classic NPC ?

Unfortunately, those purple trees in Jungle and Egypt, as cool as they may look - they're purple because they're missing textures. It's purple as a way to catch QA's eye as "hey! this is broken!". One of the 90 bugs, for sure.

My understanding is that part of the definition of a software bug is that they are unintentional. Seems to me that these purple trees are not a bug.

@@thegreathadoken6808 they are purple because the texture for the tree is missing, this causes the trees to display the bright purple checkered pattern, it’s pretty common for missing textures in games.

My dad is an Arboriculturalist and he would always complain about a lack of trees in my favourite games like Goldeneye. Now I can see what he was banging on about, the extra trees really do make the game seem more alive. A lot of the levels in the original have this cold barren lonely feeling to them, it's amazing that just adding a tree changes the atmosphere.

@@GamerFolklore Thanks for the heart! According to my dad's humble opinion OoT has the best tees on the N64. He was very excited when he saw the deku tree lol But I'd love to see you do a joke deep dive on your personal top 64 trees on the system. The ones in body harvest are certainly the most fun to drive into because they make such a great cracking sound when they fall down

The scary thing is, you actually can see whats in the cabin, it loads just fine. Your mind wont let you remember. This is why the game never came out.

Very cool, I liked this kind of curated "here are the interesting highlights an expert who knows the original inside and out noticed" sort of game tour. Obviously not something that can be done all the time since it's reliant on actually having something to walk through but I hope you do this again if a similar opportunity ever shows up, fits the cozy storytelling vibe of the channel perfectly.

I'd love to see it in more remasters or remakes for sure. It allows them to take a risk with visuals without forcing players to start a new save to check differences. Master Chief Collection and the Another World ports for modern platforms have the feature at least.

The Halo anniversary from 2011 was one of the earliest to implement it. The MCC actually encourages you to use it with it being a achievement of doing it on all levels. It's nice to see artistic choices with new textures/different textures and such on the fly.

Remake games have been doing this for a long time. Almost every remade game Ive played has a button to change to the old graphics.

@@wh0racle3 I’m curious what games have this feature. The only ones I ever knew about were the Monkey Island games and Halo 1& 2 remasters. It’s certainly more of an exception as opposed to the norm. Though I do believe people really enjoy it and would like to see it become a staple of remasters

I played through the whole game on Wii. It had that horrible clunky movement of modern FPS games where you feel like you are carrying a giant rucksack of ammo. It wasn't awful but I would never play it again.

@@GeovaneSanciniSR it came out at the peak of multiplayer gaming the multiplayer was severely lacking, it was one of the worst fps of the time, even the singleplayer was a short waste of time with only a few original levels only sharing the name as they were completely different the only thing I kind of enjoyed in that game was that arcade mode thing even then it was trash when I was expecting the xbla remake itself lol

The water pool in Egypt looks finished to me in the remastered graphics. It looks like there is water in there and it’s not just “dried up” but maybe that’s just me?

it is a normal floor texture specially made to look like a bottom of a pool, normally this would get a layer of moving transparant water texture above it! im 100% sure this would be added at the end if the game was not cancelled

One more interesting change: Enemy Rockets now affects spawned enemies, not just the ones loaded with the level. Graslu00 found that out the hard way when he was streaming an Enemy Rockets playthrough.

The floating door glitch in Frigate. Seems like a jumbling of door assignments. Your in-game position relative to your on-screen view must no doubt be the cause of the wonky door assignments. It's obviously not a normal position Bond should be able to access. So the loading of objects and textures process, as far as doors relative to each other in the view, must be out of order or in some odd order. But when you've returned to normal positions, and go back to the area , all the door assignments and thresholds load normally as they should.

My assumption was that there is meant to be a door there but the game just never loads it because it reaches the limit for how many doors can be loaded. So you can see it when you hover over the stairs, but you can't when you're going down that corridor normally. Either way it's fascinating.

@@vapormermaid might have something to do with the enemy AI, I could see how (especially in Frigate) the difficulty of using many doors' state on pathing and room-to-room viz/sound proximity checks could be too much for the poor N64 and they just best effort it.

I wonder now actually if this also has to do with the ghost doors in archives. If the game optimizes door state and AI pathing through doors in a limited way, maybe it's possible that not only can door assignments be shuffled or culled incorrectly, but also door state. So a phantom open door could be a door state that accidentally got transferred by the engine.

@@vapormermaid and the set of circumstances to emulate must happen by chance extremely rarely. I'm not by any stretch a Goldeneye coding wizard or anything, in fact there's a lot i have to learn. That being said if it is ever found out how to manipulate door thresholds, that would no doubt be a huge revelation.

this XBLA may give ideas to use in the console version, for eg, right away being able to see the alarms for Dam SA - you'll see the alarms, practice the lines and implement them into the console version! great review as always!

Also the florescent lights in that cool looking room in Aztec, you see the checkerboard pattern indicating a missing texture.

18:00 I think seeing through the wall in that mode only happens because the game wasn’t design for it. The modes where 4:3, 16:9, and 16:10 during time of development. Sometime between the game disappearing and the leak a scene group hacked the game to replace 16:10 (which was a common VGA monitor aspect at the time used with Xbox 360) with 21:9 (why I don’t know). It is in the nfo file of some leak uploads. /shrug/

Great video, I absolutely enjoyed watching all of it from the speedrunners perspective! What I kind of wish I would have heard in the beginning of the video is 1) Is the speedrunning community happy this was released? (I would assume so... it’s an extremely faithful and beautiful port right? 2) Does this change speedrunning the original game? Of course not. You mentioned this later in the video but based on the title I personally would have liked it near the beginning. These are different games and of course would have completely different leaderboards and I imagine someone who has been running this game for years would find it very refreshing and generally fun to run a new version of the game even as a less competitive/meme category just to mix things up. Great insight as always Goose!

That's weird as Miyamoto didn't like the whole killing thing, hence why the one video (the ending and/or opening atract one) protrays every character as if they are an actor.

The Control glass being black in the original made that section the hardest part of the entire game, other than maybe the big drone gun/shuttle room in Aztec. Nice improvement, I'd say.

That does really mean much in the grand scheme of things, it just means that you could make a copy or print your own copy of From Russia with Love and sell it. The rights to the film character "James Bond" and the film's characters and story are a completely different thing that are sealed up tight with Danjaq, LLC not to mention possibilities around actor's licensing of their digital likeness.

I wonder if there are any old strategies that had to be tossed aside because of the N64 low frame rate. I wonder if because the new hardware, if guards are spawned in from the beginning and the whole map is loaded already? Can you pull in a guard from halfway across the map?

The weird door in Frigate is probably due to how objects and level geometry are loaded. Guessing from what I can see, the object loading is based on entering rooms while the the level geometry just uses more modern visibility techniques. I theorise that there are two overlapping sets of objects in that particular room, and which one is loaded depends on where you approach from - they were probably gonna use this quirk to place an Easter egg there that you can see when you do the stair bug as a nice surprise to players of the original, but didn't get around to it before development was ceased.

Wow they really made surface feel like its outdoors and not some weird massive foggy room. I couldnt even play Surface as a kid cause it freaked me out so much but this version is great.

No more framerate work arounds required with looking to the floor with movement however you still go faster with the diagonal movement.

The question is, if modders will patch and finish the game, what version will speedrunners use? The camera's that break after 1 bullet in the glass for example, etc

i played goldeneye 64 back in the day like im sure we all did, but the controls alone on this xbla leak make me enjoy it alot more feels more modern in terms of control and that to me makes me enjoy it more

Thanks for checking the secret Frigate door! I was wondering about that. BTW there is another door beyond that, if you manage to open and float through the first one and turn right, there is another door. You cannot reach that one because you will drop through the floor first. It not a huge mystery though. Both those doors exist in the level but have the wrong room assignment. They're unloaded when you are in the room that actually contains them, but they are loaded when you're in the part of the level with the stairs where they would not be normally seen (unless you glitch using tiny bond). Whether this was an accident or purposeful is unknown, but I bet it was deliberate. The devs didn't like those doors (maybe they slowed down the movement too much) but rather than removing them entirely it was easier to just change their room number so they would unload.

For me, part of the enjoyment of learning about GoldenEye speedrunning was that infamous Ryan Lockwood's Streets 1:12 video where the guy gets a megagamegasm from skipping 1:13 and being a f***ing legend.

The door on Frigate seems to disappear once it fully opened. at 43:34 the door is not there at 43:37 after turning to the left and back the door is there At 43:52 when you take a step back the door disappears again

I wonder if the Frigate door's location changes, when you are in/out of that lower staircase zone. Maybe it was just incorrectly implemented, and is always supposed to be there, but only appears when you're clipping, not in the actual level space.

On bunker 2, while the vhs tape looks the same in inventory, before picking it up there is a slight difference between the xbla version and original.
