Thanks so much for making this and sharing your knowledge. Your "reflexive" documentary style is very enjoyable. One day I hope to find this species in the wild but I'm not holding my breath.

Chromatophone Productions I really appreciate it! Narrating can be a challenge, but I feel as though I am getting more comfortable doing it. Good luck with your wood turtle quest! There population is still healthy in some areas, but is becoming fragmented due to habitat loss and road mortality.

No more assumptions on the behaviors of these animals. One of the biggest mysteries, is just how cold tolerant these animals are. Not just the turtles, but snakes as well. You are definitely breaking new ground, no more assumptions on their characteristics. Another stellar, and educational video. Thank you Mark! I bet that water was cold!? Lol Hope you still have all your toes, because no one else is going to do this! Lol

Thanks for this information. I have recently acquired two wood turtles and could not figure out why one insisted on being in the water when it is so cold outside...now I know, I will quit worrying about him.

I found one in Springfield,MA 10-10-2020. It was in the middle of the road Upside down on his back. I was able to right it, and it ambled over to the pond. It was in Hillcrest Park Cemetery .

Good work Donna! If you didn't come along at the moment it would have likely been killed. Wood turtles are a species of special concern in MA, and even saving one is vital.

Very nice video Mark, I just found your channel. It’s my dream to find a wood turtle in Maine. For these animals, they seem to be wintering in very slow moving rivers with leaf covered bottoms. Do they seek out these types of habitats only? Or might they be found in small but higher gradient, sandy bottomed streams as well? Thanks!
@lotterhand
@lotterhand 4 жыл бұрын
Hingeback Tortoise Central Thanks! They all seek out slow moving but well oxygenated rivers, but river bottom substrate can vary from sandy, to thick muck and everything in between and usually with some snags, root systems etc present. Good luck on your quest!

This is incredible. I've seen wood turtles hibernating like this in a shallow stream in Plymouth NH years ago. I couldn't believe it when I first saw it. Do other turtle species do this in northern states or just wood turtles?
@lotterhand
@lotterhand 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! It is such a memorable natural encounter and glad you got to witness it. Other species of turtles can be observed during the winter, but usually are not as visible.

Just saw a dead one on the side of 90, got turned around (im in a tractor trailer so this took 35 mins) and confimed it. Female and i felt infront of the back legs for eggs and thank god didnt feel any but was discouraging. I was hoping it was still alive and could be saved

ugh that's rough...I commend you for making such an effort to get back to her, admittedly more than I have ever done. Hopefully, she laid a clutch sometime in June and her eggs/hatchlings survive.

I was recently gifted a wood turtle. I live in Wyoming, and its pretty cold out. So I decided to keep her indoors. But recently I noticed she's been less active...I presume she's starting to hibernate - but im unsure if it's okay for her to sleep in a dry area or does she need water? I have a small soak bowl but she decided to spend her sleeping days under her log. I would hate for her to get sick for not providing the right environment for her hibernation. I would really appreciate some help. Thanks
@lotterhand
@lotterhand 3 жыл бұрын
A soak bowl is fine and I would just keep a day/night light schedule and make sure you are using full spectrum light bulbs (UVA/UVB). Because it is December she may remain inactive for the next month or so, but she should be okay. I would consider increasing her day schedule by an hour or so in a month to mimic increasing spring daylength. Good luck!

can they hibernate outside of water?
@lotterhand
@lotterhand 4 жыл бұрын
Good question. Wood turtles only hibernate in water. In our area, only the truly terrestrial box turtle hibernates on land.
@axolotyls

I wonder how they determine when to emerge in the Spring. The water temperature lags behind the air temp. Maybe they detect increase daylight length? Nice video, thanks for making it.

Thank you and excellent question and one I ponder often. I suspect it is based on few environmental cues, such as the sunlight angle and the passage of time (i.e internal clock), but still as you indicated water temps especially in early spring are still cold and on one of the first mild afternoons in March, where the bottom of the river hasn't budged a single degree from that morning or even the day before how does the wood turtle "know" today is the day to surface?? Maybe there is some mixing with warmer surface moving river water, but that wouldn't explain turtle species that hibernate at the bottom of a placid pond. My hunch with wood turtles is that since the overall water temperature is up a couple of degrees in March say compared to Feb and the sun angle is higher, the turtles move slightly towards the surface on a bright sunny day, trying to sense if the surface water is noticeably warmer . It should be noted that even dormant wood turtles shift around a little in the middle of winter and by early March may move several feet in any given direction on the river bottom as they slowly warm up so for them to make foray to the surface to test the conditions seems logical. No doubt there is some in depth research regarding this interesting topic!
