Very nice footage! However, I have a few questions. Many of the scenes, which you say are shot with a trailcam, do NOT have fixed composition; there is a slow zoom-in or zoom-out. I'm not aware of any trailcam that will provide that effect. Is (are) there such a cam; if so, what are the details? Also, since snakes are cold-blooded, I would guess that IR-based motion sensors aren't great for capturing them. What's the solution for that? Are there trailcams with some other type of motion sensor (ultrasonic?) that are more suitable? Thanks again for the great footage! Very nice!

Great questions! The zooming effect is done in post...not overly technical, same technique used when zooming in/out with a still image. Trail cams today are triggered by both heat and motion and often the reptiles are warmer (and moving) than the surrounding micro-climate.

@@lotterhand Thanks for the reply! My recollection from high school biology class is that snakes are cold blooded and adjust to the surrounding temperature. Therefore I assumed they're the same temperature as the environment. I guess that's an oversimplification on my part, or maybe just misremembered. Also, I assumed that the inexpensive trail cams are not sensitive enough to trigger on a few square inches of motion in a field that's at least a few thousand square inches. Can you recommend any specific beginner-level cameras? Thanks again for the info and the great photography!

Excellent shots. The common snapper is kind of like ringneck snakes, or even the American toad, in that we tend to forget how cool they are because they are so common. I forgive you for feeding them.

I got bite on the middle finger by one last week. One fang when in, but it felt like someone had driven a nail through my finger. I used Benadryl immediately, and kept taking it for a few days. The hand swelled considerably, but the finger only oozed puss. I look far more carefully before I reach for something. I was picking up a watering can in my garden.... Look everywhere! Trust me... LOL

When I was stationed at binocular marine base I and 4 other men chose to travel up to the Michigan line that borders Canada. We caught a huge rattle snake in February of 2015. Deep snow and cold air, we all discovered by accident the largest rattle snake this South Georgia boy had ever seen, or even on tv. It weighed 46 pounds and 7 ounces, it was 7.5 feet long, it had 18 rattles. It was a monster. We caught the thing and we ate it after we cooked it of course. There was a huge amount of meat that we carried back to the base. Our sergeant and lieutenant allowed us to use a bq grill we used for R&R occasionally. We shared the rest with 5 other marines and afterwords we all agreed it did not taste like chicken. The taste was great, it’s a unique taste that stands alone. I’ve eaten venison, rabbit, coon, opossum, squirrel, wild boar, elk, moose, and monkey. Rattle snake tastes like no other wild game that I’ve ever tasted and all the others agreed, it has its own unique taste and smell, both are very inviting. After we had caught the rattler it had a very bad smell however once we chopped its head off the smell went away or we got used to the smell, I think the head was causing the smell, not sure though. The head was 8.5 inches across and 6 inches long. Its was bigger than both my hands put together. The guys on the base could not get over the size of the head and the length of the skin. We let our sergeant have the skin and head. He knew a taxidermist that could tan the skin and remove all skin and meat from the head leaving the bones in place. He would bleach the bones and then mount the skeleton of the head. I love rattle snake meat. Two of my marine buddy’s and myself spend a week in Texas each year catching rattlesnakes, the eastern diamond back that is, no other rattle snake can be counted in a rodeo round up. I’ve seen up to 1000 rattlers in a tent with nothing but plastic walls about 4 feet high keeping the snakes secure. The cooking goes on for two days and it’s great. You can eat rattle snake in a variety of ways. They are many recipes for rattle snake meat. We all decided when we leave the marine corp we are going to settle down in mid Texas somewhere. I’m hooked on rattle snake hunting. We all have said that catching another rattle snake like we caught in Michigan is our ultimate goal, however Texans we’ve talked to say that rattle snakes in Texas never get over 4 feet long. I bet they do, the snakes have just gotten so smart that no one has seen one, like the bull moose that’s 10 years old you’ll never see him unless he wants you too.
