It's really not all that realistic at all.. Not saying Mad Max style was all much realistically played out in it's own way. The series called Last Of Us had the most realistic outlook on what America could look like in a post apocalypse. They did a 20+ year ahead post date.

This was a really good adaptation of the book really show's how bleak and desperate their situation is. His hope and love for the boy gives him the strength to continue living even when thing's are seem so lost. In the end of the film I'm given hope when the young boy is found by the family as my heart broke for him being alone.
