What should I practice on the saxophone?
Whether you play alto, tenor, soprano or baritone, mastering the saxophone involves mastering your practice. But mastering your practice doesn't necessarily mean practicing more.

I was in marching band back in high school and Im trying to relearn it. Its been about 9 years and I thought id be able to just pick it back up but that didnt happen lol. Thanks for the lesson your the best

Do you have a video related to the subtone and its production on alto?. I am considered a master in the classical subtone but have not been able to access information related to the jazz subtone, the requisite embouchure, type of mouthpiece, hardness of reed etc etc

I'm up to lesson 8. Great course. 3 months ago, I couldn't make a single sound on the alto sax. Playing many songs now and progressing. Quick question: Is there any reason to avoid the 3rd method for playing B flat? The one with both index fingers. I find it easier especially in the upper octave. Thanks

Hi Armando, I’m so glad you’re enjoying the course! Great question - there’s no reason to avoid it at all, this is probably my own bias creeping in as a player because I never use it in my own playing, so I didn’t include it in the Beginner Series. Interesting you mention that you find it easier, it shouldn’t really be any easier / harder than the other fingerings for Bb, and makes me think you perhaps have a leak on your A / Bis key? Not sure why else it would be easier for you to play.. In the meantime, feel free to keep using it!

Hey there! I've been watching your channel right before I got started with the sax a month ago and I absolutely love the content you put up on KZfaq. I'm just wondering if you could help me out with one thing... I'm painfully stuck with my overtones. Low Bb is fine, but I cannot hit the second octave for the low B, C, and C#, no matter how much I adjust my tongue position. Any advice for me? I've been trying to slur onto the high note to no avail

I had the same problem! After about a week of trying different stuff as you are, I just stoped, relaxed everything and just blew with a nice loose embouchure. Boom! I hit that second octave. I didn’t think about anything but the next tone up. Sometimes you just gotta chill.

Hey! So glad you’re enjoying the content, and thanks for your question! So 2 things: 1) If you’ve only been playing sax for a month, don’t worry at all about practicing overtones just yet! Overtones are a great exercise once you’ve got a good handle on your tone, but focusing too much on them early on will probably just end up causing you confusion and chewing up better spent on practicing long tones etc. In general, I would give it at around 3-6 months before attempting overtones when starting sax from scratch. 2) Since you asked, overtones actually come much more from your throat than your embouchure (I’d say it’s like a 90/10 split).. If you put your hand on your throat / neck and feel what happens when you sing from low to high, that’s the same action that happens when you’re trying to get higher overtones. You can play the note you’re trying to achieve with your regular fingering first, then switch to your overtone fingering and try to “sing” the note you just played to help get the right throat position. @@SaxTuition Thanks for the throat tip, it's something I've never really considered. Singing the high note seems like a golden tip, can't wait to try it at tonight's practice! I'm still consistently doing long tones across the chromatic scale, keeping my tone development in place. Appreciate your heads up though!
