As always, very informative. I often make good use of your tutorials. I've got a question George. I'm curious, after using the polygonal lasso tool to create the boundaries light, is it important to have the Paint Bucket's tolerance adjustment set to zero. I'm assuming it's a requirement for a better effect to the black ribbon light effect?

In this picture 0 seemed to work best. Different pictures may need a different setting. I will always be a low number though. Also check out my other channel where I am now posting all of my new PSE videos www.youtube.com/@HTGPhoto

Nice effect George, one question for you. Sometimes when you get this light effect, you often can see dust and such floating in the air. This effect would be more in a close up than in the example you use I believe. How would you achieve this additional effect? Would you just add Dust and Scratches from the effect menu and then limit the area to the bright spots with a layer mask?? Light, color and contrast seem to be the things that really gives a picture some pop. I always enjoy seeing new ways to apply these effects! Thank you for all you do! Rich

Hi Rich, I never tried to add in dust, nice idea. If you use the dust and scratches filter it will add those in black so that won't work. I would look for a dust paint brush on one of the free brush sites then use that to add in white dust. You may need to blend to get the right effect. I have found that most pictures can use some increase in contrast, at least for the current fashion. Actually what is really current right now also pushes the saturation and brightens up the colors. A softer, less contrasty look was popular back in the 20s & 30s last century, nice look. The main idea behind this project was a quick technique that didn't take much work, if I was going to add in dust specs I would probably take more time on the light streaks as well. George

Ah, I thought, and how will this differ to the Light manipulation video - the deer in the forest? Quite a lot, clearly! Excellent use of the selections to produce pretty darned realistic light rays. And you know, I never think of using the rectangular marquee and using a combination of painting the selection white and then blending with Soft Light to lighten up part of an image. Thanks for that as well!!

Hi Peter, I had been thinking about this idea for creating light streaks for a while so I gave it a try. It turned out well enough to pass it on in a KZfaq video. Those Blend Modes are great as you can see since I use them in almost every project. George

Hi, it is possible to do something like this in Photoshop Elements but I wouldn't recommend it. All of the tools are far more advanced in Adobe Photoshop, especially the brush options, making this project far easier than it would be in Elements. I also like Corel Painter for this type of work.

Hello Gurus, thank you for the quick response. My hardware is an Intel Core i5-7500 processor 3.40 GHz, 16 GB memory, RX 580 graphics card, would that be enough for Corel Painter? If so, could I also take an older version 2018 or 2019, because it would be cheaper.
