The Most Powerful Psychological Force In Game Of Thrones
What would be the most powerful psychological force in Game of Thrones? In this video I want to talk about why his identity as Stark or Greyjoy is so psychologically important for Theon. We’ll discuss how a sense of identity helps Theon recover from his devastation at the hands of Ramsay after he becomes Reek and how we can all think about our own identities so that they serve us in the best and worst times in our lives.
First off, in the context of Game of Thrones being a Stark and being a Greyjoy mean two very different things. Starks are honor bound to a fault, morose, and completely without guile. Greyjoys are pillagers who take advantage of the weak, enjoy the hedonistic pleasures in life, and are constantly looking to improve their position. Theons choice to identify as a Greyjoy over a stark changes the entire course of the story.
6:43 Names matter as shown before Game of Thrones season 8
8:32 Environment and peers affect Theon in HBO Game of Thrones
9:36 Habitual environment trumps labels like with Reek

@zarazoostra I'm very sorry you went through all this! I can relate because I was raised by foster parents ( my parents died when I was younger ) who entirely believe in that whole black paedagogy crap: all humans are born evil, you have to break the childs will to be able to form it and make a responsible human being out of it, obedience, punishment when doing mistakes and you do all mistakes on purpose, not too much body contact/ no hugs, only on "special occasions", as to not spoil the child rotten and stuff. When I was punished ( locked up, hit and stuff like that ) she wouldn't make eye contact with me for a few days, because eye contact is a reward I have to earn..... I believed I was evil and deserved their cruelty at one point too. The only thing you can do in my experience is going no contact. They will not understand how they hurt us. There is a lot of empathy missing in people able to do that, probably bacause they themselves had a shitty upbringing. Being around them only leads to more hurtful moments in the future. I hope you live a life with people who treat you nice and are kind now! ( Sorry for my funny english, isn't my first language ;-P )

How on earth did Gendry know the way back to the wall himself?? Seriously, were they planning to fight the whole undead army, do you get that?? GalaxyEspeon, I was shy around women as a younger man, owing to an early rejection, at nearly age 10. But my personality is extrovert dominant. I was still outgoing around other males and all adults. Eventually I had enough experience with women that I no longer felt the need for that shyness. It sure held me back for a while, though.

We say this about children as well. Parents should never tell a child you are a bad boy or you are a bad girl. They should also not tell the child you are a good boy or a good girl. They should tell them you have done a bad thing today. or you have done a good thing today.

I feel like Robb and Catlyn Stark don’t get enough heat for how they treated Theon, and how his betrayal is largely on them. Robb constantly reminding Theon he is no Stark and Bran is not his brother, and Catlyn saying things like “Never trust a Greyjoy.” Imagine growing up in that environment.

It’s also interesting to know that Theon’s POV chapters in A Dance with Dragons are not named after him but after his other names or titles such as Reek, Turncloak, and Prince of Winterfell. The only chapter entitled “Theon” is his last POV, when he finally had the courage to rescue Jeyne and escape Ramsey. This clever titling of his chapters alludes, of course, to his identity. Also, his ADWD chapters are my favorite in that book because of the character development. Like, I wanted to pat Theon at the back and say, “Hey, I know that what you did to the Starks was shitty, but after your jump, I am beginning to be proud of you.” Redemption arcs are the best, and I hope Theon makes it until the end of the book and TV series.

I get so much more respect from my friends, myself and peers than before and I am living a happier and fuller life. I am my own person and it’s awesome 😄 I have dedicated my mental consciousness to being the best person I can be, and stand up for the right people and the right reasons. It’s not so bad at all. The books really hammer home the themes of names and identity. Each chapter is named for the point of view it adopts. Sometimes it just says the character's name, but they change over time based on changes to the character's identity. So you'll see chapter titles like "Cat of the Canals" or "The Kingbreaker" or whatever. Arya in particular spends a lot of time dealing with her identity. She changed her name close to a dozen times and adapted her identity to match, and that was before she joined the Faceless Men.

This video is what I needed right now. I went through a very difficult time and I lost my sense of identity. I didn't know who I was anymore. People said i became more 'mature' but deep down, all I saw was a shell of my old self. I am slowly learning to move beyond that and think of what I have been through as a lesson of maturity and a steep learning curve. Now I'm trying to find out who i am and what have I become. The part about self image going hand in hand with your identity is true. During that difficult time I became more interested in fashion and beauty. Even though I felt like shit on the inside (physically and emotionally) i still tried to make myself look as presentable as possible to overcompensate on the inner strength i felt like I was lacking inside. After a while I slowly began to see the maturity that people were talking about.

There's so much more to this than what you've touched on. Comfort and discomfort play a huge role in whether we want to change or not and whether the changes we make will be permanent or not. Pain is the number one factor in decision making. If we become someone else even though it pains us then we can only last so long until we're forced to go back. The brain is an objective thing that has limited capacity to change. It's not just a summation of thoughts and feelings. Sometimes changing oneself works best if we treat it as a temporary deviation from the norm instead of a permanent change. It's not all about making change work for the sake of change. Also, some change can seem productive from the outside when it's actually destructive on the inside. Since the reason we do or don't change, temporarily or permanently, is to reduce pain and increase happiness, many of our decisions seem irrational when they're not. Our psyche is protecting things deep inside of us, losing them would pain us. This is why you're wrong in saying that identity is an illusion. Identity is a real, objective thing. It can cause us to feel happiness or pain, depending on what we do with it. We just don't always know what our true identity, the one that our brain has objectively formed, is. You need to expand on this video, do more research. There are different views on the matter and yours is only one of them.

Yeah tbf, as soon as Ramsey took Theon back to the Dreadfort it struck me of trauma techniques they used to make people dissociative in the MKUltra experiments. The abuser usually also plays the part of a saviour from time to time. The more this happens the more easily the mind disassociates from reality, and it creates a strange type of stockholm syndrome. To me, this looks like a case of DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) Traumatic or stressful situations cause the persona of Reek to appear, it protects the real Theon from experiencing the pain in a conscious state. This has happened several times now, first when Ramsey used him as "Theon" to take back Moat Cailin, when Theon thought the deal was going wrong he started to change into Reek, bringing forth all of Reek's signature physical characteristics (none of which Theon has up until this point in the scene). Then finally, the boat with Euron, where the impending torture he knows he will receive from his uncle is too much to bear, Theon essentially "goes away" in the brain and Reek takes over, and does the only thing he can to protect himself.

No. This was the error of relativism the author of this video should have warned against. Phenomenal stuff like identity are powerful conductors of human behavior, but reality is what it is, and is unaffected. Using the word reality like you just did is outright immoral.

COC usually focuses on things you can change and what you can do about situations, so trauma may not have been the best thing to focus on.

Great video, Charlie. The illusion of identity was a recurring idea for me in the last months. It´s pretty much the underlying message of the Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse.

Charlie good stuff man! One thing though..... Affirmations are useful but only if the self image is in the process of changing, if your not (in the right way) working on changing your self image then affirmations may bring you success but like you said with the plane autopilot analogy snap you right back on course with your old programming. You don't need to try and act differently, the crazy thing is once your self image is changed you'll AUTOMATICALLY start acting differently. Thanks for bringing up psychocybernetics though!!!

Congrats for another great GoT video. So far you've covered Tyrion, Tywin, Baelish, Jon & Daenerys, Margery, the Starks trio and even little Theon. Maybe you could do a video on real life (in office or campus) Ramsay or Jeoffrey. Sure thing is that those two guys are completely out of line, due to the power they wield, but on daily basis, and on ruling powerless basis, there a lot of people that use such behaviour models... Strangler and hounds are not the best way to deal with such people. Best regards
