THE HOWARD HUGHES H-1 RACER FIRST FLEW IN 1935 AND BROKE THE WORLD LANDPLANE SPEED RECORD OF 352 MILES AN HOUR. ALSO THE FIRST AIRCRAFT MODEL PRODUCED BY THE HUGHES AIRCRAFT COMPANY . THIS IS AT THE AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM IN WASHINGTON D.C.

yea it is a Beautiful Plane ... I thought that it was very cool to actually see it up close after reading about it and watching the movie

H1 is indeed beautiful, but so is the Staggerwing above it.

Thanks for posting. It's truly one of the most beautiful planes ever. However... I can't believe the museum polished the plane! People have such a penchant to polish raw aluminum: especially warbirds. This plane was originally in raw aluminum with a beautiful satin finish. So many warbirds are victims too. You wouldn't find too many pilots going to battle in shiny targets. Shame on the Smithsonian.

Howard Hughes invented flush rivets to be originally used for this airplane.

Found this on the internet: Charles Ward Hall of the Hall-Aluminum Aircraft Corporation submitted a patent proposal for a flush rivet in 1926. Hall’s Buffalo, New York company produced the first aircraft with a riveted fuselage in 1929 with his XFH Naval Fighter Prototype. The first aircraft with butt joints and flush rivets to fly was the Hall PH flying boat of 1929. While Hughes should be recognized for many accomplishments, the flush rivet is not one of them!

"Nobody had ever flown that fast". Sorry to correct you but they had in fact flown faster at that time. Hughes record was just for land based airplanes. At the time seaplanes were faster. Hughes "record" from 1935 is not that impressive in one knows that the Italian pilot Francesco Agello flew his Macchi M.C.72 to 440,5 mph in 1934 (almost 100mph faster than Hughes speed). That record still stands today as the fastest seaplane ever. Seaplanes were faster because the airspeed record planes >>>

I looked at the Macchi plane, and what a beauty it is! It ran two engines and counter rotating props. The Hughes plane ran a single engine, so to compare the two might be difficult. Did the Macchi company race any single engine planes at that time? And if so, do you have any specs on that? Thanks for your great comment!

Macchi certainly had a good deal of single engine seaplane racers before building the M.C.72. Perhaps the most well-known example was the Macchi M.39, which won the 1926 Schneider Trophy race held at Hampton Roads, Virginia.
