I had first hand experience meeting this vile man. When I was 8 years old we would hang around the local chippy and he would come up to us with stolen bike parts, looking to exchange with what ever we had. He always wore a black rolled up beanie and had a big black moustache. Scary grown man riding round on a kids bike. Then to hear about the murder, it was beyond shocking, especially in our sleepy seaside community

I know and understand people beat upset with me, but I feel sorry for him is a different way because the victim. How can you overcome a person with his problems? I think he had to also have anger because he knew enough to know he had problems. All around this story is sad.

hearing about the guy who testified even though it meant prison time was so important. i know a lot of true crime fans think all criminals are equal, but as someone whose been in the position of criminal and loving criminals, there’s such a vast difference morally from non violent/drug related criminal activity and the depravity of this monster today

I feel there is a clear separation between “crime” and “morality”. Usually the latter is used to dictate the former, but they are not equivalent and they do not always correlate. It’s all dependent on intent + the overall balance of how much someone helps or harms others. That’s obviously putting it in an extremely simplistic way, but hopefully y’all get what I’m saying.

I’m usually ok with these and get through them without crying but when the description of lacerations in that baby’s mouth came on and doctor said it was from her biting down from the pain…..I’m sobbing. Men like this deserve castration of every sexual organ or a nice, clean bullet behind the ear. I’m sick over this. For her to be ripped from her safe place and brutalized, my God, why? My heart is broken for her and her family hearing what happened.

I lived and went to school in this town. He used to ride around my school on his bike and one time followed me and my friend all the way home. We were only 12. The whole town knew of him as mad Howard. I can still picture him now on his bike and it's been 30 years. He should of been stopped way before he did what he did. He was always harrasing children. And everybody knew it

It almost sounded like Sophie's mom was blaming herself for this. As a mom, I can't imagine the pain of losing a child, but she obviously did everything in her power for her.

A few years ago, in Serbia, a crazy butcher kidnapped, assaulted and killed a 14-year-old girl, Tijana Jurić. She was out with friends that evening. The police thought she had run away from home and did not want to launch a search immediately. She wanted to return the sweatshirt she borrowed from her friend, and she set off alone. The whole country waited for her to be back home. The search lasted for 13 days. The killer strangled her with that same hoodie, the same night after he kidnapped her, and covered her body with some leaves and dirty mud near the road. Her father now has his own foundation, and since then he has been advocating for the victims and children safety. He initiated some new laws, now if predators sexually assault or kill the child or a woman, now they will serve the life in prison, instead of the 40 years maximum sentence. He also lead the initiative for the Amber alert usage in our country. Her father always says the similar thing, even after many years “I read the police reports, and it says that she called and screamed my name. She wanted her mom and dad. I will never forgive myself the fact that i was not there, and i still feel the guilt because i wasn’t able to help her. I just wish that i could done more for her.”

Idk if UK convicts are as adamant about seeing your paperwork as they are in the US, but as soon as they find out you're in there for anything involving crimes against kids, disabled people, or the elderly, your life is hell throughout your entire stay.

Why does it always take someone being killed until action is taken against these monsters? It's like they just turn a blind eye until It's too late, and I'm sick of hearing these backstories that clearly point to someone who should not be allowed near the public but is just ignored. Action needs to happen way before it ever gets to the point of tragedy.

rape and sexual assault is one of few crimes courts will throw out due to a 'lack of evidence,' as if most women and young girls should just walk around with a bodycam at all times on the offchance they might be assaulted. the standard for evidence in these cases is ridiculous.

I could not agree more. Why tf was he out after all the assaults sexual and otherwise he'd commited and his abnormal height, strength and aggression. He should have been in a secure psychiatric unit from his early teens and then poor Sophie would never have been his victim. Let's get these monsters off the streets before they offend to this level. Yet another failure of the diabolical British justice system where the perpetrators are more important than the victim 🤬

In the seventies we were all aware of the creepy guys around town. Sophie’s parents let her sleep in a tent in the backyard with several children, something we all used to do. They have nothing to feel guilty about since they had no way of knowing a monster was lurking in the hedge!! Unfortunately the buddy system couldn’t save her from that creep. Rest easy sweet baby girl 👧🏻😢

You know I'm so thankful the father made the decision to testify against his son. I'm sure that was a difficult decision to make but he did the right thing. This sick brutal person needed to be off the streets and locked away for life. So horrible this little angel had to endure such horrifying conditions. Rip baby girl.

As someone who has mental illnesses, I believe there's absolutely no hope for people like this and they should be institutionalized for life when they start committing these vile acts, especially if they refuse treatment like he did. His first r@p3 conviction should've kept him locked up, knowing his predilection for younger kids. Some of these people's rights shouldn't be allowed when they're this far gone and this violent. Same thing with schizophrenic patients who refuse to take their medication, that almost all of the time is dangerous depending on the severity of it. Sadists and zoophiles/zoosadists shouldn't be allowed either because they can't control their urges; like Snakething, Woof, TimWin, as well as many many more. And just p3d0s altogether, they just need to be locked up with no eligibility of release, they always reoffend.

I worked with a few clients as a Social Worker. By far the saddest, to me, were the ones with Chromosomal abnormalities. Like a slot machine the genes of both parents sometimes land on a match which produces conditions so rare, often doctors don’t know more than their name. This doesn’t excuse Howard and he needed to be removed from society. RIP Sweet Sophie! Thanks again Jiles and I’m really excited about the new season!

@@rapitup45 I’m saying they could contribute to his behavior such as causing low impulses control, decision making abilities etc. so many of these rare gene hiccups don’t occur often enough to be studied with a large enough sample size to say which actions are definitely attributable to the gene problem. Taking his differences brought on by physiology plus a horrible treatment growing up by bullying because of size difference and learning disabilities is a recipe for disaster. I am not trying to excuse his actions or take the blame off of him and cast It anywhere else. As a psychologist,I’m just throwing out there in case anyone is interested in what made him do it or what I always ask afterwards-‘Why would they do that’. He is right where he belongs and the judge was right that he should not be released because I think he is incapable of changing his behavior even if he wanted.

You're right. He is where he belongs, but being born with such an abnormality seems like very nearly being damned from birth. We all get so much rope to decide who we will be and what we do, but they get less, sometimes so little it seems nearly inevitable that they should be wicked.

this is why I've always maintained that "attempted" anything should receive almost the same penalty as succeeding. Why should they be rewarded for being shit at their crimes? Plus, I do believe that would act as more of a deterrent than 5 years on probation or whatever other useless sentence imposed.

Hopefully it goes as many of NDE near death experience accounts detail. That one 'pops' out of the body before the point of impact and/or high trauma with no pain. Especially in cases like this. Absolutely terrible for this girl.

Sophie was so beautiful. Such an angel. I appreciate you remembering her by sharing this case, but I find crimes against children unbearably hard to watch. I can’t imagine how even the jury has moved on. I could never serve as a juror on such a case. Even though justice is in their hands and that is all that can be done for the victim, I’m afraid i would too selfishly protect my sanity. Hopefully I never have to find out if I have the courage or not.

The answer is because they themselves were abused. Most if not all of abusers were abused themselves and perpetuate the cycle. It started getting really sexual in the 60s with the hippie/free love types fucking anyone even though they might be like fifteen. It brainwashed so many that would’ve been bad people potentially into flat out deviants. Hallucinogens only exacerbate this. Then they molest a 7 year old, the 7 year old never gets help, isis now attracted to abusive people because their wires got crossed and they’ll sabotage a relationship if the person is a decent human without those tendencies. It’s textbook and has been an issue for a long time, especially when parents think it’s ok to beat their kids with belts and shit. Like of course they’re going to have issues. The studies have shown women end up having a bunch of kids with different dads who either are abusive or flat out absent, and it has less an impact on men, but when it does impact a man, that’s when you get the assholes and sadists and murderers. But nobody ever tries to enact action. Some people need to be sterilized yet suddenly that makes us Nazi Germany? Really? Trying to prevent unfit people from bringing broken children into society is totally cool, but talk about not letting them have kids and suddenly you’re a monster? People are dumb. Like, fr lack of intelligence dumb. Look no further than YT comments/twitter/Reddit. Now we have access to see and hear people we would’ve never heard from, and we can see just how many stupid people are on this planet. Plus they think others will care about their opinion when we won’t lol. We’re in a generation where impressionable minds are surrounded by literal morons and the trees that will sprout from this era scares me censorship wise as a comedy fan/writer. Btw all that info isn’t some opinion I came to through anecdotal experience. This comes from fifteen years of listening to loveline, with every night being filled with these idiots. Having unwanted kids, cheating, sabotaging relationships with good people, deadbeat dads with moms who will say they love them. It’s mind blowing but a reality and until we take child abuse AND neglect seriously, this will never change. Nobody ever mentions abandonment of children. Like we praise single moms, but why are they alone to raise their kid? Because they picked wrong and the dad is this type. One time is a mistake. You’ll see plenty of people married multiple times with multiple children from different dads. It’s, as they said on loveline, albino white trash - TRANSLUCENT white trash. Yet nothing will ever be done

I remember this awful crime in 95. My son was nearly 3 and I remember the horrible shock and sadness I felt for the family of Sophie. It made me more vigilant of my surroundings and trusting my own instincts more than before. This is the first deep dive I have watched of this despicable crime and I thank you for the concise, thorough and compassionate presentation. God bless ❤

In the UK at that time crimes against children weren’t taken as seriously as they are now. It was the same with rape and domestic abuse. It’s not perfect now, but at least there is harsh punishments for these kind of crimes.

You should do a story on the murder of Shanda chare in Madison Indiana. It was a particularly gruesome story where a group of high school girls tortured and burned alive another high school girl here in this sleepy little town. Of course I live in that town and some of the women just recently got out of prison for it. It was all about jealousy supposedly but I would truly like to see you going to depth about it because the story has never been done on KZfaq and it is truly a wild story

Her name was Shanda Sharer, not Chare. She was 12. And her killers laughed at her as she was crying for her mom. Hope Rippey and Amanda Loveless. 14 and 16 yrs old.

Thank you for making these videos, they take a lot of work to do, and the research alone must be emotionally draining. It’s not easy to read and re-read so many awful details and see countless photos of the worst atrocities that a monster can do. All you do in making these, telling the story of a victim with respect and compassion, and placing blame where it should be, on the ones who were actually responsible, is important. It’s nice to hear the bad guys actions get picked apart with a perfect amount of anger and snark. They deserve it, and to not be given as much weight as the victims on their lying comments and bullshht excuses for their actions. You’re doing a great job in telling these stories. As a tribute to the people who were lost or hurt, telling their story TOO. Not making them just a name in passing when recounting the actions of the horrible Thing that victimized them. It’s a lot of hard work, the information is so hard to process emotionally., and it takes a lot to put into your own words. You and your difficult work is appreciated greatly. Thank you Jiles. ATB

In Canada and the United States, I'm pretty sure there's an affidavit for information surrenderd about a more serious crime that won't incriminate yourself, stupid that the guy committing the burglary had to choose between going to jail or not, he should have been granted amnesty for providing information for such a serious crime

I've seen exactly 1 video where it's been a mannequin. I guess people's minds automatically go there to try and save their minds from the trauma of the truth? This man was SO sick! Just how in the AF was he still walking around with everything known about him? He had to have been caught more than once for these things to be known. The horror that this poor child went through is just unreal. This is one of the top 3 most horrible cases I have ever heard about a child. Such an adorable little girl. It's terrible what happened to him while he was a child in that school, but he was already mean as sh#t before he went there, so I have a hard time believing that experience did anything but make it worse. It definitely wasn't the cause. I hope her parents have found some peace and aren't blaming themselves.
