Between 1981 and 1987, Howard Kendall took Everton to a number of trophies, and turned them into one of the best sides in English football. He built a brilliant side who conquered England and Europe, and Everton have not seen such success since.

Outstanding player and manager, he built two great championship winning sides an FA cup and there first European cup, the cup winners cup. I don’t support Everton but Howard Kendall was one of England’s finest and he gave Everton success and pride . RIP Howard Kendall…….

I remember seeing Howard making his debut for the Blues on a sunny day in April 1967 against Southampton , shortly after losing a five goal classic against a very strong Nottingham Forest side, in the quarter final of the FA Cup. On his debut he struggled in the old right half position, and giving no sign of what the Goodison crowd would see at the start of the 1967-68 season. Harry Catterick created a three man midfield that played some of the finest football I'd ever seen, in the next three seasons. In the Anfield derby in October 1968 the blues gave an outstanding performance and after Alan Ball scored an early goal they lay siege at the Liverpool goal at the Kop end. Howard crashed a 20 drive into the Liverpool goal from outside the box that was full of defenders, it was ruled out for no reason, minutes later he sent another shot into the goal that went in over the goal line . this too was ruled out. That night I was standing high up on the Kop and looked on in disbelief. Late in the second half Tommy Smith scored from a direct free kick. Alan Evans who had just joined the Reds, later said he had never played in a game with football played so fast. Howard was part of a selective group of three who had won the league title as a player and manager. George Graham and Kenny Dalgleish were the others. Perhaps his spell at Athletico Bilbao cost him the chance to succeed Bobby Robson as England manager, instead Graham Taylor who never played at the top level or win a trophy before taking over from Bobby Robson.

Unfortunately with the European ban, and the stingy Peter Johnson as chairman, Everton have been in decline ever since. Continued by current chairman Bill Kenwright. Our new stadium looks magnificent. However, we should have had a new home 20 years ago on the kings dock. At the start of the Premier league, we were up there with United, Liverpool, and Arsenal as the big 4 in England in every metric, trophies, fan base, stadium. However these clubs all redeveloped or moved to new stadiums maintained their high standards and moved with the times. Meanwhile we stagnated, and have been left 20 years behind. Now gazumped by the likes of City and Chelsea. And you could now say even Tottenham, Newcastle and Villa. All in far better positions on and off the pitch. The support remains there for the club from the fanbase. But the core of what the club once was is dead

It does make you wonder how things might have turned out had he stayed in 87. European ban aside, you have to wonder if he could have been another Ferguson and created a dynesty.

I was there for so many of the great games during the mid-eighties The team he created had so much belief in itself & as a supporter we always felt that we were going to win almost every game . The European ban came later in 85 when we were at our peak We would have been in the European cup in 85/86 season
