Democrats and other critics of President Trump are urging former Starbucks chairman and CEO Howard Schultz to reconsider his potential plans for 2020. Schultz announced Sunday on "60 Minutes" that he is "seriously" considering an independent run for president. Schultz, who's out with a new book called "From the Ground Up," joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss his possible bid for president, and why he says it would be "disingenuous" for him to try to run as a Democrat.

Is anyone going to talk about his policy rather than what party you want to win. I rather like his take on the debt.

@Drew Shepardagreed I would like an option that would force the candidates to be held to what they run on. Rather than the virtual signaling on both sides. I think if people choose to look past there party biases his run will open up the game for independents.

@Alex M I would even go farther and say that the media could care less about his policy and will instead continue the narrative of "He's taking votes away from the democrat nominee". I dont believe having wealth condemns you to being unfit to help others and your country.

As a long-term registered "Republican", I was thrilled to hear the possibility of someone making a serious effort to bring America back to some middle ground and break up the 2 party political system that has not served America for decades, under either party. I voted for Trump in 2016, even though he was 17th out of the 16 potential Republican candidates in my view. I am a real conservative in terms of fiscal responsibility. Socially, I am more libertarian and even borderline liberal in my views. Neither party represents that combination. And I think there are lots and lots of us...Democrats and Republican. Unfortunately, Trump was running against Clinton, and I could not vote for her for multiple reasons. If you run, I will likely be in your corner. More importantly, I think a serious independent candidate will help both sides realize that they can not continue to move further and further apart. At the end of the day, there are no hyphens, we are all Americans and we need elected officials to serve the greater common goals. Or as he might say, We are all on this together!

I'm in support of hearing anyone out that is talking about running as an independent because even Stevie Wonder can see that neither party is concerned or has the best interest of the people that voted for them. To me I don't care if there are losses on the side of the Democrats or Republicans because neither one of them care about the people so let the chips fall where they may. While I don't know enough about Howard Schultz to say if he is the best man to run as an Independent I am willing to hear him or any other party that is talking about running against both political parties because both parties have lost sight of the people that voted for them.

If people want to vote for satan (as they did with Trump) let them. It's their right to commit suicide. Through Donald Trump the American people have shown every satanic egomaniac with money in this country that THEY can become president. You have only yourselves to blame, people. And when you learn the truth you will find that the selfish human ego is what the Bible calls: satan, the devil, the serpent, the beast, the antichrist, the prince of this world, and the god of this world. And as a prophet of God, I have been given THAT information from the Highest Authority!

Will not Schultz statistically take away equal amount of votes from Trump as he will from the Democrats ? I thought this was basic maths ? even if neither Trump nor the Democrats get to 270, the presidency will be decided by the house of representatives...which is currently controlled by the Democrats, so in fact if anything, Schultz will help the democrats by running as an independent candidate.

I really like how genuine he seems. Only once did I get an impression that he was trying to "sell" me anything, which (ironically) was when he responded that he thought he could beat the system. Otherwise, I liked his poise, his demeanor, that he responded directly to the questions asked, and that he gave careful attention to the panel members. That was refreshing.

I'm traditionally a "California Republican" that vowed after the 2016 primary that I would never vote for Trump. The DNC has gone so off the rails I can't stomach voting for anyone in the field thus far. I'd vote for Schultz with a clear conscious. Someone has to stand up for the large swath of Americans that are sickened by the current state of polarized politics. I hope he stays in as long as he can.

Imagine how scared Democrats and Republicans would be if somebody was sitting in the White House that had no sway to either side. I would like to see this as a reality the two party system doesn't work at least not anymore. Mr. Schultz was right when he stated that a lot of Americans feel disenfranchised because of the two party system it's too divisive and our country won't survive if we continue with it.

Just what we need: a billionaire telling people what they can and cannot have. Our current healthcare system is a boondoggle for the insurance industry. These companies only increase the cost of care, restrict our access to physicians/clinics, and decrease consumer satisfaction. Prices will only go up as individuals forgo insurance and the government subsidizes those who can’t afford it. Essentially, health insurance companies can increase prices without fear because the government will give them whatever they are asking for. Look at what has happened to college tuition by indiscriminately doling out student loans! By taking out health insurance companies, we can dilute the cost burned, give the consumers the freedom to choose their physicians without the fear of high out-of-network fees, simplify coverage regulations, and gain greater purchasing power to drive up competition, pressuring pharmaceutical and health technology companies to lower prices and innovate.

The medical insurance industry is part of the huge, huge, huge problem of the cost in health care. I KNOW, I have worked in the industry and I am in a European medical system as well as in the US Medicare system, and believe you me, the European health care systems are soooo much better .

A social liberal who actually accomplished something with his life is refreshing. Uniting Americans should indeed be our priority. Another 2-party run with Trump and a leftist extremist would divide the country even further. It would be interesting to speculate the outcome of the last race had he entered. Most of us did not want Trump OR Hillary. Their slogans actually became "If you don't vote for me, it's like you're voting Trump" and vice versa.

I think that both Democrats and Republicans have to realize that a far less polarized candidate, especially in the situation we're in right now would be very beneficial for our country. Also, he seems like a down-to-earth, decent human being with no scandals or affairs behind him. Just because he's independent doesn't mean he has no chance at winning or that voting is only going to help Trump; if enough people vote for him and take him as an actual consideration for the presidency, then he can definitely win!
