I will never forget watching AJ when he was on E TV as a gossip columnist. Back in 1996. And he said that Shaquille o'neal was going to sign with the Lakers. This was when Shaq was still playing with Orlando too

I met AJ Benza back in the mid 1980s when we were both hanging out at the mobbed up nightclub scene on Long Island & NYC..we hung out in the same crowd & the ONE thing about AJ that I will ALWAYS APPRECIATE is that when he started to REALLY blow up as a regular gossip columnist at the NYC Daily News & was a VIP at ALL the HOTTEST NYC clubs..he would ALWAYS hit us up & get us in to the clubs as his guests & would introduce us to ALL the celebs that he was hanging with then..i remember one night hitting all the clubs & after hours with AJ.. Tupac Shakur & Mickey Rourke..not to mention the PARADE of supermodels.. Im still in touch with AJ on Messenger occasionally & he has NEVER changed.. still that neighborhood guy i used to hang with back in the day..

Good interview. Good questions. And AJ is right about Robin's news. That was the dumbest move to get rid of that segment, which they did when covid hit, and was/still is completely lazy of them, as well as makes the show less like a radio show and more like a long, slow podcast. I'm praying they bring Robin's News back before the show ends for good.

I think AJ is in denial. He screwed up big letting that idiot Stuttering Yawn get under his skin and they did a witch hunt on him. Plus I don't think he was as close to getting the Jackie chair as he thinks. He rats on Artie for trusting him to score one day. John acting all tough but he probably would have kicked AJ's ass. Looks like the hair on his head migrated to the fence behind him.

He was very close to getting that chair. It’s obviously unbelievably silly now, but even then, he was commonly referred to as the “front runner” for the seat.

I mean to be clear Artie was spiraling he was nodding out on heroin, fucked up on that show for a long time. For everything Howard's ever done and been he's never been in front row seat to drug culture and addiction culture. I mean he calls himself fat and considered himself having a weight problem he's never dealt with alcoholism or drug addiction on any level. If you have either been a drug addict yourself or loved somebody who's a drug addict it's a taxing and it's an exhausting way of life. Howard gave Artie every opportunity and he squandered every single solitary one of them. He lied to Howard constantly he would come on the air fucked up he would lie to everyone. At the point where he tried to kill himself I think Howard felt way too responsible and was way too fearful that if something happened because he adored Artie, he adored him. Don't forget this is the guy he spent about $30,000 throwing him a surprise 40th birthday party Howard didn't do shit like that for anyone. He loved Artie and I think he took a very cautious and a very sensible step away because he never wanted to be the reason that Artie was dead. He didn't want that responsibility and he didn't deserve it. So to say Howard abandoned him isn't very fair. You know drug addicts say and do a lot of mean and a lot of twisted fucked up stuff when they're using and then when they're done and they go on the forgiveness tour they think because they've forgotten it or maybe never remember doing it in the first place that everybody else is supposed to step up and be on the same page. It's not that easy. I speak from experience I've been sober for 3 years and I've been completely clean for two so I get it it's very very difficult. I think Howard never did anything but support Artie and towards the end I think he got way too afraid and he just didn't want that kind of responsibility and he didn't want Arties life in his hands and frankly I don't blame him. You know no one ever appreciated what they had or what Howard gave them or made them because every single one of those guys with the "fuck Howard I'll go on from here" attitude, where are most of them? Do you think Artie sell out Carnegie Hall today I don't think so. Bob Levy, where are those guys? Stuttering John is running go fund me campaigns to take a train to Washington to ask fucked up questions to senators. It's a different world. Howard can evolve in every direction if he wants. He hasn't lost a goddamn thing in his life. He still has great relationships with his family with his children and you've never once read a big scandal in any newspaper about Howard over the 50 some odd years he's been in broadcasting that says a lot for the person that Howard is. I adore Artie on the show but you know he already drove his own train into that ditch over and over again. So o saying Howard abandoned Artie is very unfair statement. AJ you should have fucking decked Stuttering John he is a complete asshole.

Strange claim that John is a “big dude”. SJ is 5’6 with narrow shoulders and short limbs. In the cabbie fight he had to literally jump or rise on the top of his toes to even reach the 6’2 Cabbie in the face.
