Will putting hammers closer to strings make subjective feeling that keys are sligthly easier? I am wondering if there is a shorter way to string, could pianist play fast passages with less power to produce sound? Sorry on bad english

Could you describe the meaning of 'aftertouch' as it effects the feel of playing or the sound? Thank you so much for your videos.

Basically if you have more aftertouch, the weight of the key will have the affect of feeling heavier. Some piano players like this, but it also means you lose some amount of control. Just as a larger hammer blow distance will give you more power but less control.

I'm studying piano tuning and regulating, at cause of my érard grand from 1876. I got to admit that almost everything is different in my érard, very confusing. You mention at the start of your video that the hammer blow distance is one of the first steps. Would it be possible for you to give a short list of the chronological steps to regulate a piano? Thanks for your videos, My small grand piano has a blow distance of 49 mm, I will adjust to 45mm , my question is if with this small blow distance adjustment should i adjust also let off and drop ?Thanks in advance

Yes, it is probably a good idea to at least check your let off and drop to see if they need to be adjusted.

If you decrease the blow distance you will also have more aftertouch. To compensate you can add cardboard punchings underneath the front rail pin.

Ive got a question. How do you regulate or adjust this thing that the hammer does after you press a key and slowly lift it up? I have no clue of the name of this action but in Grand Pianos you can do that and as far as I know, it is an important action of the hammer to actually make the repetition. Greetings from south America. Your expl are amazing.

Hi Bryan, Yes, the hammer should slowly rise back up a bit if you slowly lift up on the key after it is in check. This is adjusted by regulating the whippen spring. If it rises too quickly, that means the spring is too strong. If it doesn't rise at all it means the spring is too weak. The way this is adjusted varies from one type of action to another. Sometimes there is an adjustment screw on the the back end of the repetition lever and sometimes you just need to strengthen or weaken the spring by pulling up or down on it slightly. I will try and make a video demonstrating this as time allows me to.

@@howardpianoind You may have a video on it already or individual videos but it would help to have each part of the action named precisely. This is the best video series I have come across for regulating a piano. I'm mostly interested in grands., but it's good to understand vertical pianos too.
