Hi @HowardPiano. Thank you so much for this video and the many others you have posted on line. It's an amazing gift you have given. I fixed my piano today, which I could not have done without your videos. I had messed up a few of the damper springs when I was trying to recover a mute that I dropped while tuning the piano and I was able to diagnose and correct the issue after watching this and several other of your videos. Thanks again!!!! (And I will continue to bring my business to you whenever possible.) You rock!

That model has a few parts missing. That model may be for console or smaller pianos. Large uprights have a few parts not mentioned : Sticker, Sticker Flange, Sticker tongue, Sticker Cloth, Sticker rail. Thanks it's nice to know the names of the parts of an upright action. I have the book with all the parts and their purpose but it's good to see from the teaching aspect. I was looking for the improved action but ran across your video, thanks again.

Yes, some of the taller uprights have a sticker which goes from the capstan up to the bottom of the whippen.

Greeting. I have a question about the spool that holds the spring, it broke and I did not place anywhere on the footage so that it could replace it or describe it as it should be?

If you’re referring to the cord that holds the hammer butt spring, yes, it can be replaced if it is broken. If you’re looking for it from a piano supply company such as Howard Piano Industries it is called “Silk Cord”.

Hi Steve, I teach a children's choir and we are trying to introduce them to a varied array of instruments. So far they have experienced an organ and a guitar, and I'd like to introduce them to the piano. I came across your videos and was wondering if there is a way to get a display of the inner workings of either the upright or the grand piano to show my children. We have three different choirs in our church children's choir section - K, 1-3, and 4-6. We meet after school gets out, once a week. If you can help me at all I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Cat, It's great that you are a part of teaching children about the value of music in their lives. It sounds like you're looking for a action model like the one I use in this video. If this is the case, you may want to check with a local piano store as sometimes they will have one for demonstration purposes that they may let you borrow. Or you could check with a local Piano Technicians Guild Chapter who may have one that they could lend out.

Hi Steve. What is that big wooden bit underneath the hammer butt with a screw on top of it? Is that a hammer butt rail or something, it has 2 set screws looks like supporting the damper lever and the hammer butt. Cheers

That is the action rail which is what the hammer but, the damper lever and the whippen flange are all screwed to. This configuration may vary depending on what type of vertical action you have. For taller uprights there might be a separate rail for the whippen flange.

Is this an Asian style hammer butt? The hammer butts on my piano look just like this and one has a broken spring. How easy do you think it is to remove and replace the spring, and what tools would I need? I noticed you have an 'Asian style' piano butt spring on your website.

I want to restore my old baldwin upright piano, it's got a bunch of sticky keys, and many keys require a different amount of force to strike the hammer to the string, and also many keys can only be played forte, not softly. Also many keys are struck with the same force but cause the hammer to strike the string with a different volume. Also the pedals don't work. I dont know where to start. I am wondering how much it would cost to just pay someone to restore it. I don't even know where to look for a knowledgeable piano technician with experience to do this

The cost to fix these problems will vary depending on how extensive the work that needs to be done. I would recommend going to the Piano Technicians Guild website where you should be able to find a Registered Piano Technician in your area that could possibly do the work. Here is a link to their website: www.ptg.org/ It sounds like you have a lot of sluggishness in the keys or the action or both. It could be that the hammers are very hard as well, which would make it so it is difficult to play soft.

Silly question but my keys (at the back of the piano have engraved numbers. Should the numbers be running in numerical order?

Yes, usually these indicate the number of the key. So they should in normal cases be in order.

@@howardpianoind fitting a new jack spring is so frustrating hard. Do you think a tiny bit of superglue at one end of the spring just to hold it in place whilst I try to fit the top end into the groove is okay? I can never get the top end in.

Yes, using a little glue at the base of the spring is normal practice.

I bought one on ebay and it arrived today. f you can't find one I can give you the contact information included in the manual. Actually I am watching this video to try to understand better what the individual parts are for before I try to assemble it.
