Using CA Glue To Repair Loose Tuning Pins In An Upright Piano I HOWARD PIANO INDUSTRIES
In this video I show a piano I came across that had one very loose tuning pin. I show how to apply the CA glue to the pin in an upright piano without laying the piano on its back.

Thank you so much! My piano made a noise and I was terrified to find a broken string when I opened it up, but it's only a loose pin. 99 years and this thing is still going.

Hi Saverio, It sounds like you're asking if the tuning pins can still be turned once the glue is put in. Yes, the glue doesn't actually glue the pins in. What it does is soaks into the wood of the pinblock which swells the wood. Then when the glue dries, it will have dried in a swelled state which will make the wood tighter around the pin. Hopefully this clarifies this for you.
@WarIsOver-ifyouwantit

if it's just the swelling you are looking for, would'nt dripping in a few drops of water do the same?
@howardpianoind

Water will dry out and actually make the problem worse. The glue sets with the wood in a swelled state so the wood stays tight around the pin.

@@howardpianoind Thank You but what do you suggest for a loosen pin that have a red felt circle around the base? Should I remove the felt and then apply the glue? Best regards

Yes, you probably should remove the felt. I haven’t ever come across a piano with felt around the tuning pins.

@@howardpianoind Thank You. It is a Hoffman (German piano manufacturer). I removed one. The felt pins are thankfully only in the outer part behind the string not going inside the hole. So I had only to glue the part behind after cutting the felt and removing it.

I did every pin on my mid 50's Howard baby grand. UNBELIEVABLE difference. I had notes that would never stay in tune. Everything tightened up. CAUTION: If you're doing a lot of pins at once, the fumes can be pretty powerful.

If you treat all the pins, do you then have to turn each pin after the glue has sat for a few minutes? My concern is that if the pins are not turned after applying the CA that the pin may bond too well and cause something to break if given say 1 year for the CA to cure before the next tuning?
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 5 жыл бұрын
No, the pins wouldn’t ever bond to the pinblock.

its better to ly the piano on back ? and best solution is to put that ca glue and tune it after 1 hour ?
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is best to lie the piano on it’s back to avoid having the glue drip down the plate. I will sometimes do it without laying the piano back if it is just one or two pins, being careful to not let the glue run down the plate.

Does thin hide glue work for this too?
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 6 жыл бұрын
Thin hide glue wouldn't be thin enough to wick itself into the tuning pin hole.

What does CA in CA Glue stand for and where can I buy it? Is it available in ordinary hardware stores?
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 9 жыл бұрын
PianorobicsCA stands for Cyanoacrylate. It is sometimes available in local hobby shops. If you're going to use it for fixing loose tuning pins you'll want to be sure to get the super thin variety otherwise it won't wick down around the tuning pin. We also sell the glue in our online store: www.howardpianoindustries.com/cyanoacrylate-ca-glue-super-thin/

+howardpianoind I purchased an old Wurlitzer baby grand and it has quite a few loose pins. I'm going to give this method a try. Will buy CA (as well as some other repair and tuning supplies) from your store based on all of the helpful videos you've kindly put up. Your prices are also very reasonable which is great. Thanks a bunch.

Pull the action out before applying the glue. And put something inside on the key bed just in case the glue drops through the tuning pin holes.

What is it like to get the plate out after application to all the pins?
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 4 жыл бұрын
It's not difficult to remove the plate even if you've applied glue to the pins. The glue doesn't actually glue anything in such as the tuning pins or the plate. It just expands the wood in the pinblock so the wood is tighter around the tuning pin.

Ive used CA glue and even used a hammer to pound the tuning pins and my upright piano just wont stay tuned. Im thinking about removing most of the strings so theres only 1 string per key. That way theres a lot less string to tune. Is that a bad idea? Has anyone else done that before?
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think that would help the issue at all because you would still have to have the same amount of tension on the strings remaining and the problem isn’t in the overall tension of all of the strings. Instead the problem is that the pin block isn’t able to hold the tension of each pin. I would try more glue. It could be that the pin block is in such bad condition that the only solution that would work would be a new pin block.
@KHartmann-qy6ex
@KHartmann-qy6ex 3 жыл бұрын
I think your block is split. Usually banging them in or CA works. Also reducing the amount of strings won't help cause you still have to tune em up to the same tension to get the correct pitch. You could try bigger pins. If that does'nt work though the piano needs a new pinblock.
@rowanbelt3612
@rowanbelt3612 8 ай бұрын
Reducing the number of strings like that wouldn’t be a good idea because then the force from the hammer is all concentrated on one string, making it more likely to break.

Only use on a piano thats not worth investing in other ways to correct the problem, as this will permanently ruin the pinblock. If it is a piano worth restoring, the better solution is to install oversized tuning pins.
@KHartmann-qy6ex
@KHartmann-qy6ex 3 жыл бұрын
@@qrstw As far as I'm aware this does'nt destroy the block like doping does. I repinned an old piano after doing the CA treatment. I thought this would help the block cope better with central heating and the block was bad to begin with. No problems at all. The pins don't click and are very tight. This was on a German overdamper so no harm done.

It's too bad there isn't enough room on a piano to have individual worm drives on each string similar to the tuning machine heads on a guitar.

This is absolutely wrong. Tampering with the wood with glue of oil, will damage the wood. The correct way to solve the problem, is to remove the pin, and replace it with a thicker pin.
