You guys asked me for a sakuga breakdown so here it is! In this study I break down one of the best animators of the anime industry.
Shout out to RC Anime, The Canipa Effect, and Onion Skin for being great sources of inspiration!
Check out my website here:
www.animatorgui...
About what Sakuga is:
It's the Japanese word for animation, but it has more meaning than that. Ever watched an anime where the production quality is ramped up for a specific scene? Often an action scene or a pivotal moment in the story? That is a sakuga animation method where an experienced or highly skilled animator will be given lots of time and creative control over the scene.
Sakuga originated as more of a production strategy than anything else. It can be quite an efficient way of producing TV animation because fans will sit through more limited animation to enjoy the Sakuga scenes.
It was a term used only in Japanese Animation but now it is becoming more of an international term for animation which takes a lot of skill to pull off
I tried to keep track of all of the sources for you guys. If there's any you really want to find but they aren't listed here, just send me a message!

I just saw his cut in the 3rd episode of Space Dandy 2nd season, and was blown away. What an amazing age it is for being a fan of animation, when there's actually a youtube video made about him. Just 2 years ago that would have been unthinkable.

I wholeheartedly support the idea of this being a series! You've taken a pretty rounded approach to looking at Ohira's work, from collecting your own observations with that of official interviews and other animators. It would be interesting to hear what you have to say about people like Mitsuo Iso or Yoshimichi Komaeda. While channels like RCAnime and The Canipa Effect are great on their own, hearing another animator gush about Sakuga using their own perspective on it is grand. To me, it's the best of both worlds.

Thanks very much for the encouragement! I'm going to try and improve my writing for these episodes, but it's difficult because i only get a a few hours to research and a few hours to write them because of my crammed schedule. So i would rather release these every so often but with more research and with more time put into writing. I'm only covering animators who i feel are really changing the game in some way. The two that you have mentioned are on the list but there are a few others i might cover first

Personally, I like this video analysis style of video. I think it'd be interesting if you were to plug in some of these animations and you were to trace it (with no fills), but the main portion that you're studying is in red. Then you play back the animation and you and we can probably get more out of the video. This particular animator definitely isn't my personal favorite because often times he keeps the details but loses the character... in that you can't even recognize who's doing what. Eventually, his characters wind up looking like balloon people, or it's as if he forgets the anatomy or forces perspective that doesn't really work well but he leaves it in there and it doesn't wind up looking very good... it comes off as sloppy. And it's as if he draws a bunch of roughs, adds details to them, but never does a cleanup stage and then publishes it. The transparency blur is a cool effect. I like how he incorporated it into kid's clothing folds so that it looked a bit more natural. But overall... this portion of the Animatrix wound up being my least favorite. These days, we're working with vector programs, and though many of this guy's philosophies on animated motion can be implemented, getting work as an animator can be very difficult. Even more difficult when these vectors are causing the animations to be more and more crisp. That make sense? I like what he did with Space Dandy... but it comes off as an acid trip. I suppose that works well in the weird pseudo intellectual hippy style of Dandy's story telling, but it's off putting a bit. It also looks like it instantly switched from being vector to raster in a split second. And though you want your work to stand out, you want it to stand out as quality that's already established as the style of the animation. You don't want to just have a 2 to 3 minute segment that feels like "hey this is a completely different cartoon from the animation you were watching and the rest of the animation afterward. This guy's "style" suffers from what you don't want. I started my adult life doing stone masonry. One of the most difficult things about authentic stone masonry is that right now we have this fabricated stone in the market that doesn't pay well, is super cheap but can quickly be made to look beyond perfect. This means that a traditional stone mason needs to work twice as fast and twice as hard to get the same effect that you would from fabricated stone or you won't be able to make it as a traditional stone mason. The same rule pretty much applies in animation now dealing with vector drawings. I'd like to see more of these types of videos. It'd also be more interesting if more time could be spent on the animator (which also means more subject matter for you to cover with more depth.)

So he's the animator of akira?....... No wonder i sensed it was him when I saw the first animation. Akira was so realistic in the characters movement, although some of the background were not that perfect, but there's a bounce he adds to the characters movement that just kinda makes it achieve a kind of perfection

Akira had hundreds of hands working on it and influencing the final outcome, this guy was just one element. Katsuhiro Otomo was the director and worked obsessively on it, he's the one that deserves the most credit for the final outcome.

Well i assume it's mostly because his expert style is difficult to fit into a production pipeline. It's hard to inbetween for or clean up and it doesn't fit with the styles of regular animes. and it takes much longer to draw frames with that detail so production is slowed. In Anime shows they usually work to ridiculous timeframes.
@sakumaFR

Howard Wimshurst but the flow and realism of his style is lovely but I guess since animation style isn't consistent in some Anime switching to his style does feel really out of place. Either way he has a lot of passion for animation and firing him is a big mistake. Thanks Howard

@HowardWimshurst
@HowardWimshurst 7 жыл бұрын
I should have explained that! My bad. It's the Japanese word for animation, but it has more meaning than that. Ever watched an anime where the production wuality is ramped up for a specific scene? often an action scene or a pivotal moment in the story? That is a sakuga animation method where an experienced and highly skilled animator will be given near 100% creative control over the scene. To me, sakuga appears to be more of a production choice than anything else. It can be quite an efficient way of producing TV animation because fans will sit through more limited animation to enjoy the Sakuga scenes. It was a term used only Japanese Animation but now it is becoming more of an international term for animation which takes a lot of skill to pull off

@cbbblue8348
@cbbblue8348 7 жыл бұрын
+newgamingspies Its not style,it is Type of animation,because anime commonly animated in 12 fps or 18 fps,once it entered an important scene,it goes 24 fps and let the artist do whatever they want. it means quality animation.

That's incorrect. Sakuga doesn't refer to 24fps animation (That's called 1s). Sakuga in Japanese refers to the combination between keyframes and inbetween frames. However, western communities have repurposed it to refer to impressive animation.
