How Farms Work is a KZfaq channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. Our videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and GMO crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.
Be sure to subscribe for new videos every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!

Ryan, you might want to invest in the stuff, to make your own hydraulic hoses. At least a crimping machine w/ all the dyes, that would really be worth looking into. Keeping an inventory of the size hose and the fittings you mostly use. The Dye Machines either run off of electricity, or air. That would be a huge asset for you guys to have there on the farm.

Seems that while there is loops there to hold the hoses, there isn't enough in the right places maybe? Might worth looking at exploring a better routing of the hoses.

The sun's UV make those zip ties super brittle and they just snap like string. They make special UV resistant ties for industry that are exposure rated. They cost a few extra $$ but if you use as many of those things as I admittedly do, it's well worth it.
@bashkillszombies
@bashkillszombies 6 жыл бұрын
You need to get ones that have a UV balancer and plasticizer in them. Or give them a spray over at home with a UV protectant paint from a rattle can. Edit: Having seen the part in the video you were referring to - this is why it's better to use wire. Don't trust a multi dollar part to a fraction of a cent piece of kit.

You can get stainless ties at the automotive parts store which stand up better in the sun and don't rust. Meant to hold CV axle boots and steering rack boots on cars, but work well for other things like this.

Hello Ryan. I have a question about something I have never seen mentioned on your channel or anyone else's with similar content. After spring planting what do you guys do about pest control where pigeons and rabbits are concerned? I am interested if you use similar methods to us u.k guys (shotguns, decoys etc)
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 6 жыл бұрын
I hope the manufacturer is paying attention... this reveals a weakness in the design-- they put some really nice hose loops on the frame, which is good, but they could add a couple more (well at least one) on the main frame to keep the hoses up and together near the wing fold hinge area. Granted you have to give the hoses enough room to flex as the hinge folds, so the loop doesn't need to be TOO close to the hinge, but it SHOULD be there close enough so as the hoses work back and forth in that area as the machine folds and unfolds, the hoses are restrained sufficiently that they don't drop down into the disks or get caught on a scraper arm or mount or get pinched in the hinge or anything like that. Zip ties are "okay" but the problem is with heat and sunlight they get brittle. Sun is murder on the rubber coating on the hoses themselves, and so nowdays we usually buy that "sock" woven cloth jacketing and slide the hoses through them if possible to minimize the exposure of the hose to the harsh sun, and prolong their life. The sock covers the hose for most of it's length, so they are of course kept together... Later! OL J R :)

@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 6 жыл бұрын
All depends on your soils and conditions and what you're growing... you never REALLY know what it'll do in your ground unless you try one out on a few acres and see... Everybody thinks there's some "magic bullet" or "one size fits all" approach (like no-till *everything* or vertical-till *everything* and that's just not true... what works for one guy in one area on one farm in one type of climate growing one crop with one style of management may not work worth a hoot in different soils/crops/conditions/management with another farmer... Later! OL J R :)

Ryan, Hi from Northern Ireland. I'm curious to know why you have dual wheels on most of your tractors when your ground is so dry??
@garethbryson
@garethbryson 6 жыл бұрын
our soil is far wetter and we have plenty enough traction without duel wheels. wee only use dual wheels on bog. where the biggest tractors that the ground can carry would be a MF35.
@buckhorncortez
@buckhorncortez 6 жыл бұрын
The dual wheels lower soil compaction as it spreads the tractor's weight out over a larger area so there is less ground pressure. It's not always about extra traction, although the dual wheels do help with that.
@robertreznik9330
@robertreznik9330 6 жыл бұрын
Gareth... I think it helps the Kusters' break up the stalks as the tires cover all the field area. Fuel is higher in Europe so the extra needed hp is no problem in US.
@adamkruskama8455
@adamkruskama8455 6 жыл бұрын
Disks are more popular for weight distribution. With row crops such as corn if the duals match the row spacing you can use it on planter sprayer etc. helps with traction. In Europe they like super singles. But resistant corn tend to be hard on super singles. Ride quality on a super single is usually better, but like tracks they cost more depending on brand. We use trelleborg supers on our non row crop tractors. Ride and power hop is greatly reduced without adding tons of fluid or steel.

Everything they tow is on wheels and it only goes 1 to 3 tops into the earth. You can go to the town hall and get maps of the property this is public information maybe 25 cents a page to copy it if you want copies. 100 HP max is all they need and that is pushing it.

Them hills are no issue unless you're doing PTO work and 12 or more inches into the earth. All you need is a name. The town hall will tell you everything taxes loans banks leans if any this is all public information. Like I said if they had 1.000 acres or more yes you might but what I see there is no where near that. 35 HP to blow your corn in to the storage that is all is needed. 100 HP at the draw bar is more than enough. Travis, needs a Helicopter Yamaha from Japan more than a new tractor.
