How Farms Work

3 жыл бұрын

We finished harvesting in almost record time this year, thanks to cooperative weather, and lots of field storage thanks to the Brent V1100 which kept the truck moving!

Summer Schedule
Our schedule may vary, but expect a new video every Wednesday. Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a KZfaq channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Even despite the downed corn from the Derecho this year, it seems like you guys had a wayy less stressful harvest than compared to last year. Glad to see you guys got done early enough to finally get some tillage done this fall for a change. Love the drone shots - those rolling hills look so good with the rows of corn on them. Great video, and thanks for the awesome content as always!!

Hope you now see how much a semi is well-worth the investment. The load distribution is about the same for us as you described, usually make the front hopper fuller than the rear hopper and balances out rather nicely. You have some dry graphite to spray on your hopper slides? Usually have to do that once or twice a year depending how much hauling.

have you ever considered bringing back a half load of the distillers grain to feed to you cattle. if they are dry you should be able to store all winter but i heard sometimes they come wet?
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 3 жыл бұрын
There's "wet distiller's grain" (WDG) and "dry distiller's grain" (DDG)... he should SERIOUSLY look into that and maybe doing backhauls and selling some locally would be a viable money-maker for the farm. Even for his own cattle the DDG's would be a GREAT addition-- DDG is higher in protein than corn-- when they make ethanol, a 56 pound bushel of corn goes into the fermenter, and out comes ethanol (ethyl alcohol) and 44 pounds of DDG... Part of the starch in the corn is converted to sugar and eaten by the yeasts fermenting the grain into alcohol (they basically "p!ss" alcohol as a waste product) but they don't consume the protein in the grain, so the DDG is much higher in protein and lower in starch due to concentration of the protein in the DDG compared to the original corn. SO feeding DDG or mixing it with corn into a ration for his cattle would really add value, and he could sell more of the original corn into the market, offsetting part of the cost of the DDG. If there's other cattle farmers in the area (or his Dad or brother were interested in feeding some DDG's) then he could easily make backhauls of DDG's and pick up some extra money that way, particularly if he could store it or deliver it to other farmers in the area later on and sell it to them. Would certainly make the drive down there MUCH more profitable! OL J R :)

Glad you guys had a good safe harvest, despite the challenges this year dished out with the derecho and of course the "fungusamongus" (kung-flu, wu-flu, Sichuan sniffles, whatever). At least most folks seemed to catch a break during harvest this year. Last year just seemed everything was wet all over... we waited a week and took a lot longer to harvest and corn was STILL coming out of the field wet-- just that kind of a year. Hannah is so cute, and a big help. Think you got a keeper there! Treat that lady right! Here's hoping you can get your fall tillage work done and be in better shape for a *hopefully* better next year! Later! OL J R :)

@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 3 жыл бұрын
@@HowFarmsWork Upgrading logos or upgrading trucks?? LOL:) I always thought adding a semi to the mix would really help you guys out-- I learned myself when I got back into grain in the mid-90's after a 15 year hiatus of all cotton (and of course hay and cows) that trucking costs sucked up a LOT of profit out of the grain; I could never justify a semi but I did buy an old 66 Chevy tandem to haul my own and was WAY money ahead at the end of the year. I was curious, seeing how that big cart really helped yall out (keeping the combine running and filling the truck quicker for more "turn and burn" time instead of wait time) you thinking about possibly upgrading carts at some point?? I know you gotta pay down debt on the JCB and semi and stuff first no doubt and that would be wise, but looks like a bigger cart that could double-duty as a "mother bin" would really speed things up for yall, at some point. Ideally the "perfect setup" is when the truck only sits long enough to get loaded, the combine doesn't have to stop to wait for the truck to get back and the cart unloaded into it. Worked great last year for us-- BIL was running the 9600 Deere, and I was jumping between the 600 bushel Killbros cart and the semi, hauling into town... I could make a run into town, dump, weigh out, and get back to the field, and the cart would be full and the combine full and he sat maybe five minutes-- dump the cart on the truck as he dumped the combine into the cart at the same time, he'd double back into the field, I'd finish dumping the cart, grab another dump off the combine by the time I got down to where he was in the field, run it back out and top off the truck, then stage the cart next to where he was picking, jump down roll the tarp on the truck, hop in and head to town again-- slick as snot! I love it when a plan comes together! LOL:) OL J R :)
