Unfortunately we had a string of unfortunate rainstorms that delayed making hay in the valley. I had trouble with this footage which is why it might seem like it jumps around to different days.

Summer Schedule
Our schedule may vary, but expect a new video every Wednesday. Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a KZfaq channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

The heavy drops of rain made me think it was winter and wet snow! I know I’m bias because I don’t do hay, but anytime it rains in the summer is a good day. We’ve been missing out on the rains here in Michigan too much this summer. Love seeing all the work going into getting the large rounds!

It always amazes me that you're able to make hay so quick with so few passes here (SE UK) it takes us at least 4 sunny days turning it each day, usually 5 to 6 though it can be done in 3 days depending the type of grass the thickness of the crop and turning it to 3 times a day. Though this year around us it has been a poor year for both hay and straw as a neighbour's 60 acre barley field where we have had over 750 bales off of in other years we didn't even get 300

When I was a kid we mowed with a sickle bar mower, conditioned, and raked (3 passes across the field). Then haybines came along and it was a one pass operation and you were old school if you were still raking hay. All these years later and we're back to making 3 passes across the field to get ready for baling.

Good evening from 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. Looks like you have some of our weather over there😁. I know you don't want to have weight down there when your moving bales but it painful to watch some one cart 1 bale at a time. I want to help. But logistics and cost come into that. 😂. Can I suggest to pipes to fit over the ones on the carrier twice as long to carry two bakes length that just bolt on and off. Would be a cheaper way of moving more bales. If you have not already tryed it that is. Loved that drone shots high up. Spot on. 👍

Nothing like an unexpected storm to ruin your chances of making hay. At least the corn and soybeans benefited from it. I can see how a few loads of gravel might help stiffen up the "driveway" between the field ground and the bottom, but when it's wet, there's not much else to be done except to bale up what you can and let the rest serve as fertilizer for the next cutting, as Travis ended up doing.

"Kicker wheels" is what they're usually called... they flip the hay in the center that would go through the center of the rake without being flipped over, so it can mix with the other hay and get fluffed to dry out better, PLUS kicks it up out of the stubble so that the windrows rolled up by the sides of the rake aren't just sitting on top of the hay in the center that didn't get raked, mashing it down further, so that the baler pickup can't get it as easily and leaves more of it behind or doesn't pick it up at all... Kicker wheels blend it all together so that when the side wheels roll it back it's all blended together into the single windrow coming out the back... OL J R :)

Need to plant lotus major in all that bottom land. Makes great thick hay, just hard to get dry without knocking all the leaves off. High in protein, cattle love the flaver ......... I don't know which is worse. Those 1" size raindrops in the Midwest gully washers that drop 2>3" of rain in a few hours or our months of cold drizzly here in the Pac NW. Cold wet late spring/early summer. Nothing would germinate except of course, the weeds ......... Hay that gets hammers by hard rain for hours doesn't have much food value in it, especially where it has to be tedded several times. Almost not worth putting up except as a belly filler

Get you a bottle of "Lest-Oil" cleaner... it works wonders on them oil stains... just pour some on the spots and let it soak a few hours and then launder normally with the regular laundry detergent... Lest Oil will take out as much of the oil as is possible to get out. No sense throwing it away, now it's a good work shirt LOL:) I have about a dozen "day-glo-orange" work shirts with varying levels of ground-in grease and oil stains and carbon from working on engines and exhausts and gunk off transmissions and drivelines and PTO shafts and stuff... Ugh what a mess on that low ground entrance... talk about needing to put down a few loads of stone to at least make a field entrance... looks like it got a little drier farther out from the entrance area, a small field road area wouldn't be productive, but it would contain the "damage" to a small area instead of rutting up a big area that's unproductive anyway, because even if you work the ruts out in the fall, you won't be able to cut, rake, or bale it the rest of this season anyway... so long as it's hard enough to hold up a decent stone road it'd be good to have, but I'm sure the landowners have their reasons for not having put one in already... or at least pushing some dirt up there to create a "high spot" so it stays drier where you enter and leave the field... Later! OL J R :)
