Great video, saved me buttloads of time and money. BTW - the 'white line' that marks where the track should be is like 5 1/2" from the edge.

Thank you Brian for this video. A life-saver! My daughter just purchased an 03 Highlander and the Rt Rear Window jumped track. I got it back on track but after the fourth test up and down, it jumped again. I did not know what to do but I found your video and was able to fix the problem. It was definitely the track sliding out of position by 2 inches. It was tricky and I didn't have the black silicon adhesive but I had adhesive for rubber seals, so that might work. Anyway, excellent video and much appreciated!

Very detailed video. However, I was able to fix the same problem for a 2005 Highlander without taking the window glass out. Steps: After removing panel, weather plastic, bring the window to the height where you can put the square plastic back to the rail for about an inch from the point it would slip out again, then use a window stopper (1 inch length aluminum piece with a hand tightened screw, about a dollar or less) grips the end where the square plastic slips out (like you'd do with a home window) then slowly push the window power button, about 1-2 seconds at a time (don't try too hard, it may be not good for the motor). It'd push the metal rail slide back to the original position (the square plastic push the stopper, hence move the rail). Remember to spray some lithium oil at the rubber and rail, so it can slide back easier. This method I don't see on any video or forum. I did it quite a few years ago, with both sides of the same car a few month apart (rear windows), problem has not come back.

If the rail has shifted, the problem will happen again, in which case you'll need to take the whole window out and re-attach the window pane. I found I could disengage the actuator and slide the square plastic end back in without removing the actuator from the door panel; another option for those who wish to avoid removing everything (IF the rail hasn't shifted)

Thank you! Just completed this project after a year of not being able to roll down my window without it falling into the door. One thing- I forgot to mark where the track was supposed to go and then cleaned the window, erasing all trace, so I estimated. Also, some of the rubber lining for the window didn't go back perfectly, but I'm still happy everything is functional. Thank you for posting this video!!

I recently had to deal with two windows on a 2004 Highlander that were "off track". With your detailed instructions about disassembly and reassembly everything worked out well. Thank you very much for posting this video. For me the most difficult portion of the operation was inserting the glass window into the channel/filler. I didn't have a helper for this step so I spent a moderate amount of time trying with no success. My main problem was that as I attempted to push the glass into the channel, the filler would squeeze into the channel first reducing the available space for the window. I finally figured out the following process which simplified this part of the operation. Items needed: rubber mallet, towels for padding, two tie-down straps (long enough to wrap the window top to bottom), a section of plastic wrapped 14 gauge wire longer than the window is wide and rubbing alcohol (used as a lubricant). I placed the glass on a towel on a work bench, interior side down with the bottom hanging slightly off the benchtop. I wrapped the straps around the window 2-3 inches from the ends of the target location of the channel. Next I placed the piece of wire in the metal channel and slid the rubber filler into the channel from one end such that the wire is between the rubber filler and the metal channel. What this does is force the lips of the filler outside of the channel giving you a chance to get the glass between the lips before it enters the channel. Now insert the glass into one end of the channel/filler/wire. Tighten the strap on the end that you just inserted. Continue pressuring (using mallet, strap and liberal amounts of alcohol) the channel/filler/wire onto the window until it is completely inserted. At this point pull the wire out and using your mallet completely seat the window in the channel. Be sure to mount the channel with the open side facing toward the inside. Trust me removing the channel is more difficult than putting it on. LOL Good luck and thanks again Brian

Thanks, Brian had the exact same problem on my Toyota 'Highlander' ( they're called Klugers in Australia!) followed everything down to the T. your instructions were precise and well explained the whole process went smoothly. It is obviously a design fault. Hopefully Toyota's Kai Zen philosophy has remedied the future models. :)

Thanks for your detailed view of your off-track window issue. It helped me solve my 2002 Lexus RX300 window problem. In my case, the driver side rear window stayed up but I could hear the window lift regulator move down and up on its own. With the lift regulator all the way down, I could use my hands to push the window down. The lift regulator could be moved upwards and, after hitting the bottom of the window, the window would move all the way up. I opened up the door and found that the windonw lift rubber clamp had separated from the bottom of the window. After unscrewing both ends of the rubber clamp U-channel from the window lift, I pushed it onto the bottom of the window. Then, I reattached the rubber clamp onto the window lift. The real secret, though, was that there was too much window drag in the window tracks. After spraying silicone into the tracks, the window left worked well and reliably.

Great video; advise some important changes. There are 2 problems to solve with the windows coming off. First, is the problem shown in the video of track moving out of position on glass surface resulting in the unit falling off regulator. Second, is the window coming completely out of the track, likely to happen in winter when ice freezes the glass to the frame and regulator pulls track off the glass. Guessing 2 issues are to blame. 1, the grease in the track that allows regulator joint to easily slide in track wears and dries out. 2, the rubber grip in the track dries losing it's original grip as well as metal track losing tension and original ability to clench the glass. (Fyi, the front windows are different and use bolts to secure glass and won't have this problem). The RTV in video is great. I presume any sticky substance that increases friction and ideally a little bulk and not readily water soluble (rain) will work if you don't have RTV on hand (hot glue, any craft glue, etc). But if you don't apply any adhesive also between rubber and glass, you may end up with the glass still getting pulled from the track. For that reason I would advise DO NOT APPLY SILICONE spray to track to make it easier to get track back on glass. Silicone's purpose is to make rubber less sticky and to last for a long time (why silicone wiper blades are expensive and durable). I advise using a mallet as shown in video. If you applied adhesive (eg RTV) to inside of rubber, that should allow it to slide on easily before it sets. Otherwise, isopropyl alcohol will lubricate it and then dry with a sticky bond (this is how bike handle grips are removed and installed). ...if i ever have to do windows like this again, i will drip alcohol into track down a piece of thin plastic wedged between glass and rubber and i think that technique will allow repairing it without having to remove the glass from the door because the alcohol will allow temporary repositioning of the glass in the track. ... Before you reassemble the door, apply grease (not oil, definitely not wd40) to track where regulator joint slides. And if you do have silicone spray spray it in the perimeter glass weather stripping where glass touches it. It will allow glass to slide up and down easily (saving your regulator from burning out and keeping window moving quickly up and down) and help prevent snow and ice from being able to attach and freeze your window to the door. Having your glass rip out and fall inside your door in sub freezing weather isn't fun. ...go ahead and spray silicone in your door locks, all door and window weather stripping, and wiper blades while you got the can out. ... And if you have a problem applying adhesive to the glass, the person who suggested using the window lock, that's a good solution, but used threadlock compound so vibration doesn't cause the lock screw to loosen.

Brian, thank you for this thorough repair video. I have a 2004 Highlander and over time both windows have fallen off the regulator because the track has slid out of position on the bottom of the window. I managed to slide the tracks back into their original positions using some levering and tapping without removing the windows, but this is not a permanent fix; one of the windows just fell off a second time. I think the next time I have to do this I will use the silicone adhesive as you recommend, and I hope that will be a permanent fix. Again, thank you for the video.

I have a 2005 Toyota Highlander and I have the same issue. I tired fixing it today but the track will not line up with the rotor that has the plastic square that needs to fit into the metal channel. I now see that I have to lubricate the metal channel and put it back to line up with the rotor. I also found out that over time it shifts and causes the rotor to come off track. I'll try it again tomorrow.
