Personally, when I do build my house, it’s going to be out on some land, and it’ll probably actually make sense to have some of this equipment for land maintenance and future projects.

I ended up getting a skidsteer. My land is rocky, so I will need to call in an big excavator to dig my basement, but I can move all the piles around and backfill, so I'm still way ahead. And I can fork materials and get my driveway graded level whenever it gets too lumpy.

Thanks for the continued info! I'm planning on doing a basement dig and I'm pretty sure I'll have to hire out. But I'd love having the toys!

Unfortunately, the EPA has made anything newer with a diesel motor over minimal horsepower super expensive to maintain with their emissions crap.

Great info. I think it is a great idea to own especially if you will continue to use the equipment on the property. Did have a question about paying for it. When it is time to get a construction loan can the cost, or part of the cost, of the machine be factored into the building cost you present to the bank?

great ideas. do you also need to buy a trailer to haul them around though?

A used trailer can be about $2,000-3,000, and if it has a wall enclosure you can use it for trash and not have a dumpster.

If you're going to work on other people's property make sure you get a small business insurance policy to cover your liability, the tractor etc.

How capable would either of these be for digging a walkout basement? There wouldn't be a need to dig down but sideways. Of course it would take longer than big machinery but if you have the time why not? I can only think that the extra hours and maybe wear and tear would be a consideration not to do this.

Depends on the soil. A trackhoe is best for basement work.

@@HowToBuildYourOwnHome It's New Hampshire soil so sandy loam with rocks. It's the granite state after all.

How much can your skid steer lift? Would a small articulated wheel loader be more versatile?

The skid steer can lift a lot more and can dig much better.
