Here's some links, stuff from this one I actually liked, and stuff in general that I liked for the bar, none of the garbage though ALSO: The tool I use is called a Diagonal Cutter, your comments here are telling me that regionally at least a lot of you call them snips or side cutters which is fine, but where I'm from the only name I ever heard them called by (and the comments confirm this is widespread) is a slur for ladies who love ladies, an unfortunate abbreviation of Diagonal Cutter. I discovered something shocking - shocking I tell you! - about the whiskey drinkers in my life. They would much rather have a small bottle of a really nice single malt, or a fine bourbon, or even a small bottle of an unusual whiskey they haven't tried before, than any bar gadget I could buy. Weird, but true.

I assure you those of us who favour rum and wine are much the same. Give me a nice bottle of something over a gadget that will further clutter my house before inevitably vanishing in my wine cabinet through mysterious means only to turn up six months later in a completely different place.

Totally. Even a small bottle is awesome because it gives me a chance to try something and see if I like it, rather then buying a big bottle and finding out its not my thing. Sometimes it feels like a gamble when you purchase an average size bottle because it is pricy and if you don't like it, your stuck with it. Here is my gift guide now that I think of it, companies putting out an arranged box of small bottles of their whiskeys in tasteful recyclable packaging. I would love that!

Additionally, just wanted to point out that one of the big reasons whiskey stones fail compared to the not-so-humble ice cube is that it takes a lot of energy to change phases from solid to liquid. I have actually found a use for whiskey stones. I got some from (and this is not a joke) the Yakuza 6 Collector's Edition. Yeah. It had some nice coasters, some REALLY nice highball glasses etched with a design based on the main character's dragon tattoo, and some whiskey stones with symbols from the game. Anyways, I don't really drink whiskey, at least not by itself, but I did try the stones in some soda, because I hate ice in soda. And they work pretty well for that. I think the difference is that it's not chilling a room temperature liquid, just keeping an already cold liquid cold for longer.

OXO is weirdly and inconsistently great but overbuilt and a little bit sucky. And I realize that statement doesn't make a lot of sense. But I bought their cookie stamp a couple years ago and it makes a damnably perfect wreath shaped cookie every single time to the point where I'm reasonably certain I could shove molten plastic into it and start stamping my own ornaments. Conversely their mandoline is way too complicated and overpriced for a tool I could pick up at the local asian market for less than half the cost. So I guess if you see an OXO thing at Target and you wanna grab it go ahead and watch someone review it on your phone right in the middle of the aisle before you put it in the basket. Oh, you don't have time for that? You're browsing the kitchen gadgets section at Target, don't lie to me and say you're doing anything worthwhile today.

For the more in-depth reason why ice is better: melting ice is actually 2 processes that involve absorbing energy: changing the temperature and changing the state. The latter almost always takes much more energy to do. To melt a 30g block of ice takes ~1.2kJ to bring from -20C to 0C (at which point the energy goes into melting the ice), and ~10kJ to melt it all. A 30g hunk of granite, on the other hand, take from the same freezer, can absorb 0.83kJ before it is back at room temperature. They are just bad, they physically can never work.

To add to this excellent answer: it applies to both the stones and the bullets equally. Neither one really works to chill a drink very well. However, the stones don't work far worse than the bullets don't work. The reason is that stone is generally a terrible conductor of heat, while metal is generally a pretty good conductor. When Greg held the bullet and said "this is colder"? Assuming they've both been in the freezer long enough for the temperature to equalize, that's not correct! They're both at the exact same temperature when you take them out. But! The bullet feels colder, because it's absorbing the heat from your hand much faster than the stone is. The same effect happens when you put them into a drink. Neither one will really cool a drink, but the bullets will at least lower the temperature much faster. As to the question of what kind of man owns a set of whiskey bullets, I can answer that as well: one who was gifted a set by his girlfriend. Why SHE bought them? Dunno. Guess she liked hers; she still uses them pretty regularly.

I can't keep a Boston shaker from popping open when dry shaking an egg white, whereas the Oxo shaker's seals are strong enough to contain while dry shaking a sour drink. When I make party drinks I make it by the 2 gallon batch and we usually have to do two batches in one night. That thing looks like it barely holds a liter, less than half if you're not drowning the boat. It'd need to be like 4 times bigger to be worth the effort.
@tygonmaster
@tygonmaster 2 жыл бұрын
See the issue is there, if you're having a big party it doesn't hold enough for say 20 people or more, and if you're going with less you can just mix them up by hand. It sits in this awkward middle state where you have to have a small number of people, but if you have a small number of people, it doesn't need to exist. I would agree if it was like twice the size that it is it would essentially serve as a kegger, but why do you need something like this? It really is just a useless novelty. It's a pretty one and looks to be reasonably well made, but just as with the ladies as with barware, go for the one that has some personality and function over simply looking nice. You'll thank yourself in the long run.

When one of the Hurricanes came close to them, I think Ian or Sandy, it actually missed them and coincidentally they were drinking whiskey with the bullets. This is such a better / more fun way to do a holiday gift guide. There's so very little that a cocktail hobbyist needs as a gift. And if there is something they need or want, it's something very specific, and they already have one in mind. So many "drinker" gifts are just gimmicky weird nonsense designed to prey on people who have a hobbyist friend or family member and don't know better. And then it's going to sit in a closet for 2 years before being given to goodwill. Just ask them what sorta bottle they like, get them that. Maybe a single barrel if that's a thing for their preferred spirit.

Greg, while watching the cocktail shaker section an old question came to mind, how well would a plastic Dairy Queen sunday cup with a lid on perform against the poorly designed one.

@@spencervalek2173 that would work also and Greg should test that also. I just realized one day that upside down the Sunday cup and lid look like a cocktail shaker with the lid/pour nipple.

I had to use a screwed jam jar once. It worked perfectly. Anything works better than those shakers

I LOVE how you made a whole statement about how things should justify themselves and how companies shouldn't make things that are just simply stupid and\or not as durable as they could be. Right on!

Boris the Blade, on citrus juicers: "Heavy is good, heavy is reliable. If it doesn't work you can always hit them with it." we have the yellow & metal juicer, and it's great. it's exceptionally rare that a half lime or lemon is *exactly* the amount of juice you need for a cocktail, so more often than not, you have some juice left in the fruit after you're done. with the yellow/metal juicer, no big deal, just leave it in the cup, save for next cocktail. with the other juicers, you either use and discard a half-spent fruit, or it bleeds out all over your counter. Boris the Blade might appreciate a messy counter, but my wife does not.

From a lady, I love the idea of bullet whiskey stones. I think they're cool. My husband uses his whiskey stones all the time
