@@nut897 haha it was from a chain store in Western PA called Trader Horn's that's been out of business for years. He really liked the feet on the bottom (more stable with grips - he was scared of heights so going up on ladders was a big to-do for him)

My partner used to be homeless and the can opener reminded me of something important. Firstly, this holiday season, if any of you are planning on donating canned goods, please also see if you can donate can openers. They sell them at a lot of dollar stores and it's shocking how few homeless people actually have them. Secondly, when donating canned goods, please be sure that what you're donating seems safe. If you wouldn't trust giving your family something then please don't give it to someone with less access to healthcare than you.

I lived on the streets of Seattle 10 years ago. Super totally double-secret-S-tier agree about CAN OPENERS. I also had a stainless steel spoon in my backpack that I'd clean in the sink of a Starbucks bathroom. Survived on a lot of baked beans eaten right out of the can. And also, yes, don't use a food drive as an excuse to clean your cabinet out and donate your trash. Some things bear repeating, so I'll second that "If it's not good enough for your family, it's not good enough to donate." You know that Seinfeld episode about the muffin stumps? As a former homeless person, I feel the same way about your cream of mushroom soup you had left over from last Thanksgiving's disgusting green bean casserole because you bought too many. And finally, although I am not one myself, if I learned anything from meeting homeless women on the street, it's that they NEVER have enough feminine hygiene products. Donate those to your local women's shelter.

As someone who does make soap, and am in Soapmaking communities saying Cold Process is basically the same as Toasted Tobacco and is the most common kind of Soap you'll find in home made communities.

My mother is a soap maker and predominantly does hot process. The main advantage of cold process is the scent options. Some sense such as citrus volatize at a lower temperature. If you want sense such as lemon or orange cold process is a better option.

I will definitely say that a lot of guys take pockets for granted. Transitioning made me realize how rare good pockets are on women's clothing. So yea, purses, fanny packs, knapsacks and the like are life savers. Now my goal having this knowledge is building an outfit to maximize my inventory space!

Yeah me too. I've been using a safety razor for a few years now, it's unbelieveble how a thing so simple yet so much better than modern razor is not used by every shaver. Next best thing: old school shaving soap, 10 times better than any shaving foam, I forgot what a shaving irritation is.

Terrible advice. A guy walking on the sidewalk with a backpack bumps shoulders with you. You just got rfid swiped. Good rfid scanners don't require high stealth, they have decent range and can fit in a backpack.

One thing I really appreciate about Greg's reviews is that he likes to buy stuff for life. You can get quality stuff that won't last forever, but stuff that lasts forever is almost always high quality. I appreciate that he doesn't need a bunch of junk and gizmos. Just stuff that works, works well, and works for a while. I would love to see more reviews, because I almost always agree with his take. No need to buy stuff for the first few episodes I'd like to see some of the stuff he owns that he recommends other people get too.

The taut-line hitch is one of the few knots from my Boy Scout days that continues to come in handy year over year. I've forgotten most, but that's the one that I'm really glad that I know. Taut-line hitch, two-half hitches, and the square knot are more than enough for most practical uses.

First: I admire the restraint it must've taken to not break out in a "I'M THE SQUATCH MAN! SKEE BOP BA BADA BOP" bit during the man soap segment. Second: I second the idea of a Meredith-hosted anti-gift guide. I get the feeling that she's much of a girly girl as you are a manly man - that is, _not,_ not really - which is a huge part of the appeal. Basically, I want her staring at something needlessly gendered, slathered in obnoxiously pastel pink, shouting "WHO IS THIS FOR?!?" at it.

I'm not going to lie, I really like the Gerber shard. I've had one on my keyring for the better part of 4 years and have used it to open boxes, repair friends glasses, scrape off a battery terminal to start an older car, and a whole bunch of other random uses when I didn't have proper tools to use. It also is quite effective for prying little things, and you don't have to worry about damaging it since it's only like $9 and it's tough as nails.

I used to carry a Leatherman daily, and that was nice, but it kept setting off the panic button on my keyfob. I swapped it out for a Shard 6-7 years ago, and it's opened every taped box for me, opened many, many bottles, and saved me when I quickly needed a screwdriver or to pry something.

Fun fact about the safety razors: the blades are so small that if you ever found a small slit in the wall next to your bathroom sink, it probably has a pile of these blades in the bottom of it. The thought was that the razors would never get to the slit before the house burned down, was condemned, or the original owner had long since died... and probably most of his heirs. They are very packaging and material efficient.

YES!! We demo'ed two bathrooms in my 100+ year old parents' house and found a pile of razor blades inside the wall in each. The medicine cabinets of old had slots for blade disposal. Now, I use an empty Advil bottle for mine. Don't put them in the trash!

I'm a lady, and I also use a safety razor. Just, not on my face. Gotta be real careful around the ankles, but it's worth it to not have to keep buying expensive razor heads all the time. Also as an ecology degree having tree hugger, I appreciate not wasting loads of plastic and metal all the time. My travel razor still uses disposable heads, but I use that infinitely less so I'm not as concerned. My husband actually gave me his safety razor when he switched to a straight razor for his sensitive skin.

Been interested in traditional shaving for a long time, bought myself a cheap safety razor which i intend to use till it breaks then buy a more solid one but i have fairly sensetive skin and always thought that a straight razor would be more likely to irritate, so ive usually waved the idea away as a lovely, sustainable and aesthetic choice but probably not worth the cost and maintenance. Does your husband use a solid blade?

I tried a safety razor but my skin really can’t handle it. Never had that much bleeding or irritation. Tried it a few times and it never worked for me. :(

That barebones hori hori gardening knife has lasted me 3 years so far. I’ve used it for camping and gardening. I wouldn’t call it a disposable item.

@@Ghonosyphlaids But your not. The hori hori costs 30 bucks and basically lasts longer than you will if you don't mistreat it. The cheapo spades Greg mentioned are 5 bucks or so a pop and last a few years before they break. If you actually are a gardener that would use that knife, it's well worth it. I ju8st assume the limit to Greg's gardening is mowing the lawn.

As a photographer / videographer I find the Gerber Shard very useful. Having something always in your pocket that lets you tighten and remove tripod plates is amazing. The other uses are just a bonus.

I have the gardening knife and it’s perfect for my needs. My yard has a mega ton of trees so the soil is very rooty. So while definitely not for everyone, its nice multi tool for gardening or greenhouse stuff that’s more than perennials

I'm late, I know, but thank you Greg. My husband got me the Dollar Shave Club (DSC) subscription for a couple of years, and I ended up with about six of those razer packs in reserve after we ended it because I'm not a "shave every three days" kind of female (mostly summer; have you ever experienced a Canadian prairie winter?). After your very astute comments about it, I'm now looking at the safety razor for myself. We're nearly plastic-free in the bathroom, and this is another step towards that goal. I genuinely like this format, and would welcome seeing it it once a month/every six weeks/whatever schedule you want. I value and respect your honesty and integrity when it comes to the gift listicles and the sponsorships that were not to be.

ok about the “knife” at the beginning. if you have a packed garden and plant a lot of bulbs you actually do need one of those. they’re great for digging small, bulb-sized holes for your annuals!! i have used one and i adore it for gardening

Got a cordless Wahl clipper ~ten years ago, and I have to agree that it's the best. Also, mom got herself a hori hori knife when she took up gardening seriously so it has been seeing use for seven years. They're pretty well designed for what they do, so she uses it for a lot of gardening tasks.

Dr. Squatch's branding and advertising is obnoxious, but I love the pine tar soap. The smell is strong out of the box, but after bathing it leaves a mellow, sweet, woodsy scent on the skin that lasts basically all day. I usually use that in the colder months and the aloe bar in the summer - it's perfect if you get a little too much sun and generally makes my skin feel great!

@@matthewgoebel8785 I've tried a few others. Bay Rum is good, classic. Most of them were actually so mild scented I felt like they didn't have the same "perfuming" effect that I liked about pine tar. While I'm here, word of warning if you get pine tar, the soap scum is VERY visible. It looks like black blood oozing down from the soap stand lol. Very metal 🤘

Soap Maker here (hobby, also not hippy) there are 2 types of "soap" cold and hot process. Hot process is much faster for end product, but more work stirring mash potatoes. Cold process is mix it and dump it, but longer to "cure" it also makes much smoother bars, and it is how you can also get fancy designs. As for the Natural oils part, think they are more getting at most "soap" you buy in a store is not soap. They are detergent bars made with a boatload of chemicals. That is why you tend to not actually see them listed as "SOAP" but wash, shower, or other things.. True Soap is made with oils, butters, and lye, then other addins. That is why for many people their skin is happier with Soap vs Detergent bars.

Of note, the reason why you’d go for a detergent as opposed to a soap has to do with allergies to soap, or having hard water- there are plenty of good reasons to go with alternatives over lye-water based soap. And yeah, real soap is made with lye. There’s no “chemicals bad natural good” when it comes to soap. Or anything, really.

@@cin3859 okay so a detergent is technically any surfactant that, when diluted, will clean a surface. That means soaps are, broadly speaking, a type of detergent. But in marketing, they’re usually contrasted between “soap” which is made with lye and water, and “detergents” which are any other surfactants. Now detergents (as a category) work by binding to both water and oils, one side of the molecule binds to water and one side binds to oil. But that’s not the only thing they can bind to. Hard water is water with (usually) calcium in it (or other ions). And the stuff in lye-water soap that makes it clean (sulfonate) likes binding to calcium more than the one in synthetic detergents. That’s a problem, because it means it’s *not* binding to the water or the dirt in it. So synthetic detergents are preferable for use in hard water because they don’t do that (as much).

And synthetic detergents can be altered to foam more or less, which is why you use detergent in washing machines and not soap. All the bubbles generated by soap would mess with the machine’s parts.

I have the Gerber tool on my key ring. It's pretty useful at random times, but not often. Mostly as a sharp edge for cutting things like tape. Also, definitely a bottle opener and it works decently well.

I 100% agree with you on double edge razors, they're way cheaper in the long run and pretty easy to pick up. I will say that while feather is definitely the sharpest, if you have sensitive skin it might be better to go with a blade like derby extras since they're milder.

Not associated but can also heartedly recommend Wahl clippers. Had a set for nearly 10 years and they have been the only clippers I've tried that don't get chaught up on my super thick hair. Only thing that has failed on them is one of the guards had a prong break. Stuff is made well and will last if treated properly.

Regarding the shaving brush: there are great non-animal-based brush alternatives these days. I bought one in the early 2000s that was absolute garbage: shedding bristles constantly. In 2014, I found a synthetic brush on Amazon that I bought and it has performed great in the years since. No shed bristles, great lather, highly recommended.

My favorite wallet I've ever found is just a sheet of Tyvec folded into a traditional wallet form. It's been super durable over the years I've had it and given that the wallet itself is basically the thickness of a few sheets of paper, its only as thick as whatever you put in it.

@@Tesrob I don't have that one from bespokepost specifically, but the one I have does a fine job on sod. It's not a razor sharp edge(on mine at least) but mines made out of good steel and I honed it a bit more just to help cut through thicker roots and such. My hori hori is made by a company called Truly Garden(I guess, never heard of them before) but it's really well made, has a full tang which I feel like is probably important with how hard you'll end up treating this kind of tool. My mother has a Nisaku hori that's a little cheaper, and she says it's held up great, as well

I got my barebones garden knife before it was cool...to use in gardening. It's actually really good, though not the sharpest. The weight helps with driving it into the ground. It doesn't rust, but I keep my garden tools oiled between uses. Spades aren't comparable. Hori hori (this type of garden knife) are super useful, so are the weeding sickles (though the sickles are disposable because you pound them into rocks!)

I use the Thread wallet. It's literally just two concentric elastic bands that hold everything in place. It doesn't scratch, its ultra-thin, and the flexibility and stretch make it really easy to get cards in and out while also keeping them secure. Plus, it can be hooked on a keychain or lanyard and only costs $15.

I've had a Gerber Shard for years. I've opened beer bottles with it (because man, also it was in my pocket when I needed a bottle opener), I've opened boxes with it, tightened screws with it, and once used the pry bar to move the front quarter panel of a minivan after clipping a deer on my way to work and not being able to open the driver's door. It's small and light weight, has lived on my key ring for probably 6 years, and I can say I've appreciated having it.

I have a wallet that’s almost exactly like the ridge wallet and it took me a second to learn how to take the cards out. You’re supposed to push up on them through the cutout, then pull them about halfway out before pinching the bottom. The cards will fan out and you can grab them from there pretty easily. It sounds like a lot but I’ve really enjoyed it

Magpul Daka wallets are the way to go for slim wallets. Cards slide in and out easy, and it's some kind of tough polymer so it's flexible in your pocket and won't scratch any of your stuff up. I've had one for like 8 years, they hold up great and come in a couple different sizes and configs. highly recommend.

Only knot I can still do from memory is the quick release knot I had to learn when I worked at a stable lol. we had to keep the horses from wandering off but the job was so fast paced we couldn't afford to waste time untying the lead ropes for the horses. From the end that the horse was attached to they couldn't undo it by pulling on it, but all it took was a single yank from the other end to completely untie it.

The only product I could see using on a semi-regular basis is the flashlight. I could see it being a nice backup light for hiking, but more often I would use it because I do gig food delivery work. People don't turn their outside house lights on more often than you'd think when they are expecting food to be delivered by a person who does not know what their house looks like
