Cooking From Ottolenghi Flavour! New Cookbook Test Drive
Today I'm making two different recipes from Flavour - by Yotam Ottolenghi and Ixta Belfrage.
1. Israeli Couscous and Squash with Tomato and Star Anise Sauce (P. 137)
2. Curry Crusted Rutabaga Steaks (P.63)
Spoiler alert: Both of the recipes were REALLY good and I'm definitely going to make both of them again! The rutabaga steaks were especially cool.
I think there should be more rutabaga recipes out there. It's a totally underrated vegetable!
I love Ottolenghi's recipes and it was a pleasure to make this episode. Want to see me do more cookbook review-style episodes? Hit me with your book/blog/recipe recommendations and I'll see what I can do!
Thanks for watching!
A little about me:
I'm Paula, and I started How To Make Dinner because dinnertime is my favourite time of day. (Except on weekends, when it's breakfast, but you get the point.) I love winding down at the end of the day with a good cooking and eating sesh.
I love dinnertime SO MUCH, but I know not all of you feel the same way. Feeding ourselves and our families can be stressful. So I started this channel and my blog to help give you easy dinner ideas for enjoyable home cooking with less fuss.
My dinnertime strategy - Keep it simple and delicious, and don't use too many pots and pans. Learn to cook with me and you'll be the master of quick and easy dinners that will please everyone.

Best cookbook recipe test I've seen so far. I love that you have the book on the side to show how easily it can/cannot be followed when cooking. I find that a lot of recipes aren't organized properly and I often need to pre read the instructions before starting anything. (am not a savvy cook)

Aw I’m so glad! Yep it’s an induction burner and YES it’s noisy! I have a complicated relationship with it but it’s the best I’ve got at the moment. Much easier than asking my partner/cameraman to follow me to the stovetop, it’s a bit of a light & camera maze!

Just made this, inspired by your video, and while it's a fiddly pain to make...man, is it good! I'll definitely be using canned crushed tomatoes next time, but I'm hard pressed to think of many other shortcuts that wouldn't significantly lessen it.
@HowToMakeDinner
@HowToMakeDinner 3 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. I will admit I’ve used the same flavour combo with a few (more streamlined) stews lately and they’ve been pretty darn good. One was a chickpea stew with raisins and big hunks of squash and another one was a tomato orzo thing. It served as really good inspiration for me! Glad it went well for you too :)

Couscous is not israeli. Im north African and its a native dish in the Maghreb and the sahel. I dont like cultural theft.

"Despite the name in English, it is not a type of couscous. Unlike the finely grained North African couscous made of semolina, Israeli couscous has larger granules, resembling tiny pearls, which are made of baked wheat". ... it was created in the 1950s by prime minister David Ben-Gurion as a way to feed the influx of immigrants to Israel due to severe austerity.
