The open question is material uniformity. A fun test would be to shoot fert down the middle of a blacktop road and analyze the density of granules delivered for each square foot left and right of the center-line out to the edge of the pattern. I think people would be shocked by the results with different spreaders. To make it easy, use chalk squares and take a vertical photo of each square to compare distribution.

I manage about 6,000 sqf and use the Scotts Turf Builder Edgeguard Mini Broadcast Spreader. For smaller, specific applications I use the Scotts Wizz Spreader. This is my fourth season with these. No problems so far. Works for me.

My lawn is about 6000 ft2 and just got the mini and it holds just the right amount. I use it pretty often for humic acid with the two applications of pre-emergent. It is just right and love how small it is for storage.

What's up Doc...I have the Agrifab model 45-04622 130# push spreader. I was able to reduce the gear noise considerably by adjusting my pinion gear. I added two 1/16" nylon washers on the spreader shaft, above the hopper bushing (U) and below spacer (O) then installing the agitator hairpin (J) reference figure 7 of the assembly instructions. The top of the pinion gear and the ring are now equal and they still mesh very well. Being this is an assemble yourself unit, others may require different thicknesses of nylon washers to achieve a good mesh of the ring and pinion gear. Washers could also be added on the axle shaft if the pinion assembly is too far from the ring gear. Hope this helps others.

Very informative video. Thank you fo this one. I have 7500 soon to be 10k sq ft and I’m still using the mini. Only really mainly putting all my effort into my front yard until I can finish the back yard construction and basically double the lawn. 🤭 but it’s been clicking. So I pulled it apart and really went through it but I’ve been understandably hesitant about Spending the money on a good spreader, or even a larger spreader anyway. I’m being cheap but I’m trying to stay away from Scott’s also. 🤔

Do you find the Andersons LCO-1000 spreads evenly to the right and left being it has the 3 hole drop system? Also, what have you found to be the best weed killer to use in your Anderson’s fertilizer spreader? I have been using ortho weed b gone liquid concentrate for years just spraying it walking along with a sprayer on a garden hose line but the same dandelions seem to come back each year so I’m really frustrated. Thanks!

Thanks for the great review of the broadcast class of spreaders. I would like to know which if any of these spreaders will evenly disperse fertilizer products on a damp dew covered lawn. I use a Scotts Pro Edge Guard and as with other Scotts spreaders as you progress over the damp lawn, the rotor as well as the wheels and frame get wet and the product cakes up and reduces the throw pattern. This is very frustrating as I have to apply Scotts weed killing product to a damp lawn.

We need battery propelled spreader so that we can set a constant speed and get a even application. I am surprised no one has come up with one.

I want to use this for spreading sand on pavers (for the crack-sand that goes in between paver stone driveways, patios, etc). Then I can just blow and sweep it more into the cracks. Do you think that mini product will work for that? Or which one will work best?

Doc love all your videos. On the spreaders I bought one of the Anderson’s spreaders from AM Leonard it looks the same just bright orange. A note about spreaders you don’t mention - I am 6’-9” tall have owned maybe 15 spreaders in my life (66) they all have been junk compared to the Anderson’s. I have to bend over (stoop) to push all others, essentially pushing them into the ground. The Anderson’s is the first spreader that I can use standing upright and walk normally. I called the Anderson folks before I spent the money. To my surprise a regional sales rep got me dimensions ( handle height, so on) I was impressed. You will play hell getting that kind of help from others. I also have three acres so the toy spreaders don’t cut it for me. I prefer pushing the Anderson’s spreader over pulling my large John Deere trailer spreader behind my zero turn mower. Anderson spreader to me is truly a gift to serious lawn care.

Great demo of all 4 products. One of my biggest gripes when I look at spreaders is that on a lot of them I find the hopper dispenser door will not close all the way when you close shut the system off. Hence you end up throwing product on your driveway and other places that you don’t want the product to go. Man I hate that.

Would like to have seen the Earthway in this lineup for comparison.

How do the spreader settings on the scotts mini vs the elite compare when spreading the same product? Given the fact that the elite has four holes and two rotary blades to spread the seed, does that mean the spreader setting needs to be different? Or less passes? Any input is greatly appreciated. Is it safe to use Scott’s southern fertilizer and the super juice at the same time. I received the Image can I spray it then use the spectrazide weed kill in a spray bottle with the hose or wait a day in between applications.

I live in a town house and have a small yard but I take care of 5 yards that are my size. Should I use a hand held spreader or walk behind spreader? Trying to see what is more affective. I just feel that a walk behind is to big for the small areas I have to treat.

I have a question in regards broadcast/rotary spreader vs drop spreader. I believe this video only shows rotary spreaders... what about drop spreaders? Are they any good? Do they have any advantage? Would I need to consider a drop spreader or I should be fine if I get a rotary one? Thanks in advance!

Good review, but you did not talk about the pattern. Is it even overall or heavy on the right side and light on the left? Other than quality of product, the highest complaint seems to be about the uneven pattern.

Great review, Doc. As much as I'd LOVE to have a commercial spreader like you have, my wife would shoot me with my own gun if I spent that much money on a spreader. We live in a Townhouse and the Scott's "mini" is my spreader .I take care of my lawn and the lawns of the 4 next door neighbors I have and it works just fine for the small space I have to manage.

the mini sucks. it doesn't spread evenly it leave your yard looking like a checkerbox or worse depending on the direction you roll it

I used the Scotts Elite three times and now it doesn’t open properly. The right side doesn’t open as wide as the left. In fact on 3.5 the right side doesn’t open at all. Is there an easy fix? Wouldn’t recommend based on my experience. This also appears to be a problem in the reviews. I hate it because I really liked it compared to other Scotts spreaders.

I have the Agrifab thats one model below that one. It was around $70, its straight up trash! Putting 40lb of fert in it the wheels feel like theyre about to break with each turn. Also when pushing it every so often the spinner doesnt engage to throw the fertilizer. My old lowes scotts spreader worked better than this

I was really really close to getting the scotts elite. So I’m rewatching this video. I’m going to get the agrifab. Half the reason is because I HATE Scott’s products. I’m trying to not buy anything they produce.
