[Verse 1] I couldn't utter my love when it counted Ah, but I'm singing like a bird 'bout it now And I couldn't whisper when you needed it shouted Ah, but I'm singing like a bird 'bout it now [Chorus] Words hung above, but never would form Like a cry at the final breath that is drawn Remember me, love, when I'm reborn As a shrike to your sharp and glorious thorn [Verse 2] I'd no idea on what ground I was founded All of that goodness is going with you now Then when I met you, my virtues uncounted All of my goodness is going with you now [Chorus] Dragging along, follow in your form Hung like the pelt of some prey you had worn Remember me, love, when I'm reborn As the shrike to your sharp and glorious thorn [Verse 3] I fled to the city with so much discounted Ah, but I'm flying like a bird to you now Back to the hedgerows where bodies are mounted Ah, but I'm flying like a bird to you now [Chorus 3] I was housed by your warmth, thus transformed By your grounded and giving and darkening scorn Remember me, love, when I'm reborn As the shrike to your sharp and glorious thorn

When my daughter passed away, I had no one to tell the truth about the depth of the suffering of loosing her has been for me. This song gives some words to the loss of Jamie in my heart. To this day I have not been able to speak Openly, honestly, what losing her has felt like to me. With "family" judging her struggles throughout her life, and making her passing all about themselves, Of course, they needed to do it so they would feel better about their lives. It gave them reason to make them feel better about themseves, to move on without conscience or guilt. After all, they could so easily convince her. Use her for their own pleasure or gain. Nothing I said put an end to it all. I wish I had shouted. But all that is gone with her now. I continue to speak, but still no one hears it. No one will ever understand how deeply she tusted them and because of it, how deeply she lost. This song some how puts words to the pain that I know. And I think Jamie would be grateful to know that I hear her voice in your song.

Hozier's music is so beautiful that it disarms you, then rips your heart open with the sheer raw sadness underneath. But you know, it's a kind of sadness that only exists because the things we've lost are beautiful, or treasured. There's a certain kind of hope in finally letting our walls down to feel it - feeling the loss of someone you loved is infinitely better than forgetting what love felt like.

there’s something about hozier love songs that’s like the feeling of falling in love, but knowing you're incapable of it, knowing "i love you" is a death sentence, the trumpets signaling the end of the world, and being unable to resist anyway, loving and ruining everything anyway. or something like that.

This live version is the epitome of everything I love about Andrew's music. I can't articulate what it is about this song and this version that evokes such nostalgia for something that hasn't happened. I can't express how much this song inspires me to get up and feel but also sit down and reflect. maybe its the feeling that is so apparent as he plays the guitar, or the nuances of his accent in the song. But I guess it doesn't matter what it is that I can't articulate...because what this is is art. and art is the best when you can't describe, you can only feel. lol spiel over continue with your day.

Instead of thinking about a new way of expressing what his music does to me, I am just liking all of your comments. I completely agree with you all. Edit, it's not just me either, it's my kids as well. We love your music Hozier.

No more talk of the album being underrated. Hozier's "Wasteland, Baby" had debuted as number 1 on the Billboard 200. (The first album went to number 2). First rock album, as well, to hit the top spot in 3 months. Thrilled for him - and for signs that people are listening to actual music!

This song doesnt bring memories of lovers for me. I think of my dad and the difficulties i felt in that relationship tell him how I felt, to forgive him, to love him while it still mattered. And now that he's gone it makes me guilty that I didnt tell him these things while he was still here and alive.

He couldn't whisper, when I needed it shouted. The words hung above, but never would form ... and all of my goodness is gone with him now. You're free to choose, but those consequences will have you bleeding out. Much love Hozier listeners ❤ This is what music is meant to do. Move you. R.

And the grammy winners are: dua lipa and cardi b who don't even write their own songs and will never reach this level. I'm glad to be a Hozier fan and he's like my little secret but good god, why is this man never on the trending page or winning awards? More peope should hear this.

and Ariana, Taylor, Sam smith etc. try to write a heartbreak songs that mean "I'm stronger, happier without you. We'll never ever getting back together ever" and Hozier has a song called Shrike which has so much more deeper meaning. His lyrics are like poems that he deserves a Nobel prize than a grammy. Listen to Sufjan Stevens too, also one of my fave singer-songwriters, very underrated!
