HP 3312A Function Generator - tear down, inspection and repair

In this episode we fix our trusty old Hewlett Packard 3312A function generator. This was built in the early 1990s, where Agilent/Keysight was something else and HP was "The Name" for very well build test equipment. This thing is built like a tank and considering the price tag it was certainly not pointing at hobby lab users (£1800 in 1993) .
I had it for many years and it served me well until recently when it suddenly blew the mains fuse, but a couple of hours work and $1 worth of parts fixed it.
While fixing this one we discovered that the Tektronix 465 now has a complete A-trigger fault. It was a slowly developing fault, getting worse over time, but now it appears it does not trigger at all anymore. So we won't run out of work during the winter time.
On top of that we just got noticed that the property owner wants to move into our house,.... so we need a new place to live, the sooner the better, preferably with a bigger shop ...:-)

Thanks,...you guys always told me that i need a bigger shop,....now that's the opportunity ...:-) ... unfortunately not exactly easy with the budget i have on hand ...

Thanks,... we working on it, but places like this are hard to find,... the move itself is another story, just don't want to think about that right now ...:-)

Got one of these units today and it was dead. Bad tant cap, I was able to find it by using a 6.5 digit DMM and finding the tank with the lowest resistance across it. It was not my much, maybe .1ohm. I replace it with a electrolytic too. Works now, has some issues in the 100k and 1M range, it looks like switch issues. I kept cycling them until they started behaving.

Thanks,....you can download most older HP manuals for free from the Keysight website.

NICE VIDEO I HAVE ONE OF THESE FROM MEMORY SOME OF THE SCALE BUTTONS HAVE STOPPED WORKING I THINK I NEED A TWO CHANNELS AS FEEDS FOR X-Y SCOPE TO TRY RE-MAKING FREE ENERGY WATER FRACTIONATION OF STANLEY METER

Well,... i am almost certain that for free energy applications you will need a pretty good flux capacitor too, ... look up the Doc Brown type, I guess that'll work just fine with any scope.

Hey I didn't see how you took the case off. I have one with distorted output for sine and triangle. No output for square wave but can't figure out how to take case apart. I did remove 4 screws that were in the front panel and the 2 screws that hold the handle in place. That didn't make it obvious how to get the covers off and tugging on the front didn't budge. Help

Well, starting at the front is the wrong end .... it's pretty easy, just one screw, if you watch my HP5328 video (uploaded this week), you can see it, i actually explain there how it works, all HP gear from this eara is designed exactly the same.. ...Distorted output points towards power supply issues, so check all voltages for ripple.

Hello! Does anybody have the HP3312A manual whith schematics scanned at high resolution? The schematic diagrams available at the Agilent website have not enough resolution and some details are unreadable. Thank you!

I only have the one from the Agilent site and i agree, drawing scans are not great, but good enough to understand the circuitry and if you can't read a component value on the drawings, just look at the parts lists, these are quite readable
