Today we'll be repairing an HP 54601A 4 channel, 100 MHz oscilloscope (or 54600A if you have the 2 channel model). This is a well known issue on many online forums, but as far as I know this is the first video of the screen repair out there.
I really think just replacing the two known troublemaking caps would make a good repair, but if possible I recommend recapping both boards. You'll also get to see a method of PCB trace repair that seems to work well.
Also if anyone can point me in the right direction for someone who might be interested in repairing the TDS 640 scope please let me know. I'd prefer someone who has a scope like this already the I can just send the acquisition board to.
All in all this is a really simple repair and if you can get a good deal on a broken scope it's well worth fixing.
As always, be safe, try this at your own risk, have fun, and thanks for watching! Oh and like, subscribe, and share! And you can now follow me on Instagram @bebsrepairbench. Go check it out!

Many thanks! Very useful video. I got a HP 54600A from by brother-in-law about 10 years ago and it had the same issue. After replacing those two capacitors I got it finally fixed!

Very nice. I was thinking of buying a used HP 54600B Oscilloscope. So, if something is wrong with it, there is a chance I can repair it by watching this video. Years ago, I got a hold of a Heathkit HW-101 transceiver and hams suggested replacing call the electrolytic caps and testing all the tubs. So, I replaced all the electrolytics and tested all the tubes. Only 1 tube was bad. Now, the Heathkit HW-101 transceiver works and I have made contacts on the air. This will be my first oscilloscope so it can help me learn electronics theory - I not only want to build stuff - I want design stuff too. So, thanks for your video.

Just fixed my HP54601 by replacing C609 (1000uF/50V) and C608(10uF/50V) only. Invested 2$ and the screen is back to its full height again...;-).Thanks for the great video! BTW: There's a nice easter egg hidden in the oszilloscope firmware. Press first "Print" and then the second and third button below the screen simultaneously to play Tetris...Funtimes!

I appreciate the comment! I read about the Easter egg when I was researching the scope and it was the first thing I tried after repairing it. I love those kinds of things.

Thank you so much. I am gonna order these capacitors as well and start repairing. Same issue. I'll update your list with diameters / part numbers. I can share it if you like.

A little late, but the thick red wire is a very high voltage feed to drive the tube. It has very thick insulation to prevent any arcing/shorts
@davesdigitaldomain
@davesdigitaldomain 2 жыл бұрын
I know I'm a little late with this comment, but that red lead is the high voltage lead to the CRT. the CRT can store thousands of volts even when switched off and if that voltage goes across your heart your dead mate. please be very careful when working on CRT equipment. You must discharge the CRT before doing any work on it.

im an old tv repairman and the high voltage lead going to the crt is the anode lead.

Very good friend your video! I would need the motherboard wiring diagram do you have it?

It would be very helpful if you could provide the links to the forums that you mentioned that would solve the basic problem - without going through re-capping the entire board. Maybe some of us don't have the time or resources to place an order and wait for all the parts - when we may have the few components needed on hand. Also, it would be nice to point out the values of the two trouble caps that were replaced.

I haven't. I have seen that there is a drop in replacement screen for them but I don't have a scope that uses it.

@@rollinhand4750 I tried to fix the acquisition board but didn't do something right. It still has the same failure. I put it in the side and will probably try to send it off to get fixed. The screen still works fine. From what I researched the original TDS 640 like I have with the monochrome screen doesn't have the issues like the later colorizing versions.

Wow hand on the CRT cable. Then pulling to un plug.. you need Discharge at the CRT! and remove from the CRT. ( Make the cowboy hat ) lol That can kill you if it shocks you.

It was discharged. I just didn't show it on screen. It takes me a few days to film stuff so I often disassemble/reassemble things several times without powering it back up. And then the real magic happens in editing! A week's worth of tinkering turns into a few minutes of video.

@@bebsrepairbench5074 How would you discharge the CRT?
@bebsrepairbench5074
@bebsrepairbench5074 Жыл бұрын
@@danielmorgan7702 I wish I would have included it in the video, but if you search how to discharge a CRT there's a guy with a channel called Retro Tech, I use his same method. Of course, it's still a very hazardous thing in general so use every precaution you can and attempt at your own risk.
