HP Designjet 500 - Some things you need to know!

I'm making this video for a customer who has asked me to refurbish this printer plotter he recently bought. I love this machine. she's in great shape. I'm replacing the service station and the spittoon and gently cleaning the encoder. Then she's ready to go to her new home. I hope they give her a nice name...

An hour later it finished 1 print. Just a FYI, HP lists end of service life for this model as April 21st, 2015. It was made when Windows 98, NT, and 2000 were still current. You can still get ink and printheads, but HP doesn't support parts anymore.

Hi im trying to set up a new to me designjet 500. My question is how are you able to print without an hp GL2 card? I thought they are needed to print 😮. Do you have it conected to the router or by usb or parrellel cord?

Need heeeelp, im having a trouble with the black ink, shes not printing the true black but with failes like the art is reticulated. my use is for t-shirts prints in film. recently i changed the encoder and clean the bulk ink but the problem persists. thaks very much.

I have this same printer an does awesome photo prints. But was wondering what type of printable vinyl it would take. Seen some but not sure what type it would take to use. As I know I would need to laminate it after

It must say that it is "Inkjet" vinyl. As a matter of fact ALL media you use in this printer should say INKJET --- As that type of paper, vinyl, film has the ablility to seal the ink. I've tried vinyl that isn't intjet and two weeks later the ink is still wet!

@@theplotterprincess2099 Yes you are right 100%, everything that say INKJET is possible to use in the Designjet 500, with the right ink if not using HP original its possible to get really nice prints with the Designjet 500...

Any recommendations for software for use with the 500? Would like to print and arrange multiple images on my paper roll. Currently just able to print from Word/ppt

You can nest the prints to get more but their orientation will be a bunch together and you'll have to cut them apart.

Any windows software will work with this printer.

Hello I purchased poster roll paper. When I print the ink runs and does not adhere to the poster paper. Should I use photo paper settings?

You need to buy INKJET poster paper. The inkjet paper will seal the ink.

It's in the driver. On the "print" screen. There's a choice to print in "grayscale only" and another for "black only".

You must have color printheads and color ink, but that doesn't get used in the printing, it just sits there forever...

I think No. Thermal jet head is not compatible with sublimation ink. The sublimation ink changes with heat and covers the head.

Do anyone know if $150 usd for a very old good working used designjet 500 is a good price to pay or too much?..seems like a lot of money for a 20yr old obsolete printer.

It's a great price if you can plug it in, turn it on, it comes to READY TO PRINT on the menu...and then it prints by sending the print from the PRINTER icon on the printer menu. The drivers are on HP.com and the inks and printheads are available.

Need advice..found out info hp,design jet 500 sitting unused for 3years... Will,all,the printheads be bad and need replacing and all the tubes be bad and all the cartridges be bad.? If so thats about 500$ worth of replacement parts

@@shelby50411 very unlikely. Printheads can be soaked in hot water, shaken into a sink, pressed on wet paper towel and repeat til you get two parallel lines of ink..the dry off and replace in carriage. If ink still won't print take 30-50 ccs of ink out of tubes by using syringe, needle and the port that the printhead needle fits in. But check the belt first. Is it soft and pliable or brittle, changing colors and pieces breaking off that may look like mouse turds.
