Sorry, I know of no way to look up the firmware of the dock. Also, I don't believe HP has provided older versions of the firmware for download. If you find a way to do either, please let us know!

Hi. The best bet is to buy a dock that has been in stock before April 2017. New docks may have the new firmware. To be clear, the new firmware works just fine on my other dock that is connected to two 4K monitors. Just seems to be a problem with the four 1080 monitor setup. Also, HP is continuing to work with me to find the issue so they can issue another firmware update. One more point. There doesn't appear to be any way to back-rev the firmware on the dock, so once you update you are stuck.

Hey Brad, would you mind to share the older version of the firmware? I contacted HP support in my country but they are not willing to give it to me without opening a case or something like that.

If I had the old firmware, then I would be happy to share. I don't believe HP has ever released a way to restore the original (old) firmware. In the end, I had to have HP send me an old dock to resolve the problem.

Hi Brian. The power brick for this dock is the same one used for many of the HP laptops. In fact, I have interchanged my laptop charger with the dock charger. Printed on the power brick... HP Part Number: 815680-002 Replace with HP Spare: 835888-001 UP/N: A200A00BL Output: 19.5v DC 10.3A 200W I still continue to have strange problems with my dock (e.g. can't support my 1080p USB camera without stuttering), but years later I still haven't found another dock that has the ability to drive 4 external monitors. As my monitors age, I may replace the monitors with two 4k monitors and hopefully can find a USB-C dock that can support that. All the best.

I know, right? This is the only supported configuration from HP according to the detailed dock manual. They list which ports can be used for specific monitor configurations. The dock thunderbolt port only supports one of the four external monitors. To get four monitors, you must use the VGA port. Analog ... ugh. BTW, it is likely that this is a limitation of the internal video cards that HP selected for the Zbook G3.

Interesting... I'll be acquiring a ZBook 17 G4 in the coming days so I'm very curious about this now. Have you tried with the laptop's built-in display disabled? On my Elitebook 8770w with the Advanced Docking Station, I'm doing exactly what you're doing here (3 on DP, one on VGA), but I always assumed that was a limitation of the number of digital outputs we have (1 DP on the device itself, 2 on the docking station). The GPU /should/ be able to handle 4 digital outputs afaik. I do know that Nvidia GPUs can only output four displays total, and I'm thinking that may have something to do with the behavior you're seeing (?). Is your laptop's built-in display running on on the iGPU or dGPU?

It sounds like we have similar tastes in mobile workstations. I had the Elitebook 8730w earlier and have also had the Dell M6700. Here is a link to the HP document about the capabilities of the ZBook line and external monitors. Not sure if this is the latest version of the document, but it should get you started. I have (desperately) tried to get all monitors using digital configurations, but anything outside the configurations documented in this manual don't work. That documentation even mentions daisy chaining/MST hubs but that doesn't work for you? I checked the official ZBook 17 G3 QuickSpecs and they have the same listed there as well: "DisplayPort 1.2 MST feature ("daisy-chain" feature) is supported through Thunderbolt™ 3 port on Thunderbolt™ 3 enabled devices or DisplayPort 1.2 monitors (requires monitor with DisplayPort 1.2 MST capability) with the use of a dongle." This is rather frustrating to hear about. Just an idea: Not sure what resolution/refresh rates your displays are, but have you tried lowering their refresh rates to see if it's a bandwidth issue? I'm grasping at straws here.

I am out of town and can’t check, but if I recall correctly, I investigated this possibility; however, none of the connected monitors in my setup support DisplayPort daisy chaining. That might work for you.

Any suggestions for one that works? need to support 4K resolution on at least one monitor.

thanks Brad, i have G5 notebook. currently i am using builtin display + 1 additional monitors. I like to use 3 external monitors. i use ubuntu 18.04 / will this be possible , may i know like which version of thunderbird will satify this.

Yes. I tried it on my second dock soon after it was released. It is the most unstable firmware update to date with this configuration (4 external monitors). The only solution found so far is to keep using a dock with the old version of the firmware and never updating.
