That USB naming scheme stays pretty jarring. USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. Who thought that would work?

Rik Wisselink They kind of painted themselves in a corner when they decided to revise the spec while working on USB4 in parallel. Although why they didn’t just name is USB 3.4 is anyone’s guess. Either than or they thought the Intel Xeon naming scheme was a good idea.

Might as well call the newest one USB 3.3 or 3.4, forgot the naming scheme for these 3.0 ports since people that made it can't make up their minds the name for their newer USBs.

It should be USB 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2, but the issue developed when everyone assumed USB C=3.1, and that certainly isn’t the case(and wouldn’t be surprising if it’s magically changed to USB 3.2=C). I guess maybe the only hope now is accept USB 4.0 in a few years and they keep it settled then.

Linus, your staff didn't do enough research for this episode, you forgot a few things, TB3 encapsulates USB inside the connector so you can connect any USB device provided you have the right cable for it on that port, for devices that have 2x TB3 ports, you can daisy chain up to 6 devices and up to 100W of power, You can have multiple HD arrays (not just one), and you can hang a 4K HDMI display or any USB-C device off the last device. Here's a trick for you, TB3 is also downward compatible with Thunderbolt 2 and 1 devices if you use an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter in series with your TB3 to your TB2 device as the Apple TB3 adapter is bi-directional, all others from Startech, Aktio and Cable Matters are all Unidirectional TB3 to TB2 adapters. Corning also makes optical thunderbolt cables which are pricey but offer extreme cable lengths without having to use a repeater. The TB3 drive you referenced being $900 is absurd, check out TB3 drives from OWC for more reasonably priced options.

@@fuseteam let's take it this way. Now the fastest USB standards are USB 3.2 Gen 2(10Gbps) and USB 3.2 Gen 2×2(20Gbps) and the fastest Thunderbolt standard is TB3(40Gbps).TB3 is 4 times faster than the most popular SuperSpeed USB standard(because 3.2 Gen 2×2 is really recent and it isn't as widespread as 3.2 Gen 2,previously known as 3.1 Gen 2) and 2 times faster than even the fastest USB standard ever. And this was always the case, even as back as TB1, and I bet that it will be the same with TB4 and USB 4.0(or how the fuck USB will name it)

i guarantee you that thunderbolt 3 will become a standard feature on all devices including phones and tvs. if it isn't integrated into usb3.4 or 3.99 or whatever they go to, it will replace usb. its the only interface that you could make a thumb drive for that would upload or transfer entire blurays worth of data in seconds. that would be a pretty useful tool for military and law enforcement. plug in a small thumb drive and download a tb of data in seconds. its like something straight out of a movie.

T-Bolt 3 speed and direct PCI-e connectivity can be important in eliminating milliseconds of input lag for musicians - commonly guitarists - whom are attempting to use software in a DAW on a laptop as a viable real-time performance alternative that replaces plugging their instrument into a conventional amplifier to get their sound. Currently, noticeable and performance compromising input lag is the most common problem issue and deterrent for guitarists experimenting with using the extensive tonal quality and flexibility of software-based performances in a live setting. Anyone that could address these issues and offer integrated turn-key packaged interface-computer-software build that “just worked” would fill an open niche in the marketplace.

I think it would be so cool to have an stupidly powerful pc in a closet or garage with really loud cooling to keep it overclocked, and just run fiber optic tb3 cables through the house to my desk, tv, and anywhere else that would use the computer. Not only that you can basically have a 40gbe network in your house for way cheaper than what it costs to set up.

@@rogueanuerz It has basically the same specs as thunderbolt 3 and is supposed to launch later this year. It's important for Linus to make sure not to leave out this information, especially for a video like this whose audience is not the most informed when it comes to technology. It is the standard that will replace thunderbolt, USB 3.2 gen1, USB 3.2 gen2, and USB gen3.2x2. There's nothing impractical about it, just a matter of time, and only months at that. It's important information for anyone who doesn't already know the pros and cons to thunderbolt 3, who are the exact people this video is targeted towards.

I can find a bunch ways to spend $800 but not on a thunderbolt 3 - 2 TB hard drive. Yikes I could get a SAMSUNG 860 EVO SSD with 4 TB for around $650. I just bought and reviewed a SAMSUNG 860 EVO 1 TB which cost about $150. I do heavy video editing for my channel and lots of gaming and I have zero issues with speed or latency. Good vid Linus.
