This is an upgrade from a 128GB SATA based M.2 SSD to a 500GB NVME based M.2 SSD. I cloned everything to the new SSD, blew dust out of the laptop and made sure the system booted up from the new SSD.

Awesome video. Migrated my original 512GB SSD to a Terabyte one using this method. The only thing I'd mention is that bitlocker has to be disabled and the drive unencrypted (it took 18 hours in my case) before attempting the cloning. Thanks a lot Michael.

Thanks so much for this video. I have a 5 year old G5 5587 and the 256GB M.2 SATA drive which has Windows 10 on it nearly full. I wanted and upgrade and wasn't sure if I could replace this laptop with a M2 NVME 1TB drive. I was a bit confused with all the terminology but after seeing this video I know it can be done, much appreciated.

did this on my laptop, G5 also, but I was fortunate that my model had two slots for ssd. I put the 1tb into the 2nd slot, cloned everything from the 250gb it came with then just replaced it in the first slot and added a 2nd 1tb and went from 250gb to 2TB! Also upgraded ram from 2x4gb ddr to 2x16gb ddr4. I do like how these gaming laptops are super upgrade friendly!

The boot trouble seemed to be to be the BIOS reconfiguring itself (for the new drive type) but not in time to boot correctly the first time you tried. I didn't watch the video closely so I missed it if you went in to the BIOS to change the drive type before attempting first boot with the new drive. Some BIOS firmware can just be set in autodetect mode. Even from the factory.

Hey! Thank you so much for the video. I followed your process exactly. Additionally, I made sure no programs were running in the background, computer was on airplane mode, and verified my drive for errors using the chkdsk command. Once I started the data migration I left it over night. It has been 14 hours and I still have it at 0%. It shows the time running but no progress or transfer being made. I have a Dell G5 15 5990. Currently trying to clone my current drive that came with the laptop, Toshiba 128GB SATA SSD, to the Samsung 980 Pro with Heat Sink. I am using the Samsung Magician Data Migration for this process. I have reinstalled and verified the install multiple times multiple times and it is working and up to date. It recognized the drives and I want to clone from and to. Currently, I have 86GB used up of 100GB available on my current Toshiba SSD. Should I restart the process of cloning my drive? Are there any additional steps I may have missed? I apprecite any advice that can help me figure out what is going on!

Great vid, did you set the sata SSD to AHCI before cloning? I seen people mention they’re shipped with it being set to RAID for the Inspiron 15s and need to set to AHCI for it to be compatible with the NVMe. Also which one would you prefer the 1tb of that EVO 980 or crucial P5 plus 1tb in terms of performance.
@MichaelTheComputerGuy
@MichaelTheComputerGuy 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't had issues leaving the sata set to raid. I haven't compared ssd performance between models. A Google search for both with vs between the models would be the thing to do.

I tried upgrading to a Samsung 970 plus 2TB M2 NVME from a 1TB drive. The migration worked fine and it booted fine after but I kept getting random error messages in Win10 and a couple of blue screen crashes. I tried another 2TB M2 NVME (WD SN770) and experienced similar issues. Went back to the 1TB drive and everything is fine. I thought maybe it was a limitation of the G15 5587 since it only mentions 1TB in the documentation. However it sounds like others have had some success with 2TB....

However no matter how hard I tried, I cannot successful replicate the same as other people on my computer. Only follow this video by using Samsung migrate replace other software. I got successful upgrade my ssd nvme to Samsung 970 Evo plus 1TB. But the remains didn't mentioned in this video is while you need upgrade ssd firmware, or better r/w performance, you need change the default SATA Mode RAID to AHCI on the bios. @MichaelTheComputerGuy
@MichaelTheComputerGuy Жыл бұрын
Samsung migration getting stuck at 0% is related to the c drive bring encrypted. You need to turn off disk encryption before you attempt the clone. go to start, settings and search for encryption. You'll find the option to turn it off. After the clone is done and the new drive is in you can turn everyone back on.

I am planning on upgrading my 516GB SSD on my HP Envy laptop to a 2TB drive and will probably use a Samsung M.2 NVMe SSD. You installed a Samsung 980 NVMe 4.0 SSD into the Dell laptop and those SSD cards can get hot. There isn't a lot of free space in a laptop, would a card like the one you installed run hot?
@MichaelTheComputerGuy
@MichaelTheComputerGuy Жыл бұрын
In my experience and what I've looked at research wise they do get hot but not the point where it is detrimental to performance or lifespan. It's just not something you currently need to worry about. That may change with newer solid state drives in the future.

@MichaelTheComputerGuy
@MichaelTheComputerGuy 2 жыл бұрын
If the Samsung and macrium software can see the new drive, the computer can see the drive. The issue you're having is after swapping the new drive into the computer the computer doesn't see how to boot up to windows. What you might want to look for when you put the original drive back in to try again is to make sure the drive is not encrypted. That can throw off the cloning process. So if it is encrypted set encrypted to off and then try the cloning process again.

My laptop is too thin to make an m.2 fit with a heat sink, and the current 128gb m.2 in my laptop does not have a heat sink. Now my question is; Does a 2tb m.2 ssd run too hot to use without a heatsink in a laptop? Should I be looking at a smaller m.2 that runs less hot? @MichaelTheComputerGuy Жыл бұрын
@@xXxjrxXx123 It looks like that laptop has space for a 2.5 inch drive and a m.2 drive. If you currently have a 250gb SSD it's probably in the m.2 slot. What you can do to replace that is get yourself another m.2 solid state drive, whatever capacity you like and connect it to the computer through a USB to m.2 NVME adapter. Search on Amazon for USB to m.2 NVME and you'll find one. That will get the new m.2 connected to the computer through USB. You would then use the Samsung migration software which you can get for free, Google it, to clone everything on the 250 GB solid state drive to the new m.2. once that's done you would replace the existing 250 GB m.2 with the new one that you just transferred the data over to. It should boot into Windows at that point. It will be an exact copy of what was on the original 250gb solid state drive. Only the new drive has lots of free space.
