In this video I replace the DC jack where the power adapter connects to the computer and then get Windows to re-detect the proper power and speed settings.
You can buy the DC jack here

You can purchase the tools shown in this video using the Amazon links below.
This is the powered screwdriver I use in the video. Hitachi DB3DL2

This is the one I have. It has the same 64bit set along with some other useful tools and a carrying case.

Thank you for posting this. This is my last Dell after buying many. I bought my youngest son this 559 via Costco in 2016 as a gaming laptop. It is a great machine but very early on there were problems with the power cord seating in the jack. Under the extended warranty, we've even sent it in before and whatever they did, did not fix the problem. He has moved on from this computer but I want to go ahead and make use of it myself since the cpu and memory and graphic card are still pretty good. EXCEPT that the power has been a continual problem. I have replaced the cords for a 3rd time but nothing will work. I have several times looked online and can see that this has been a common problem with this model. This video is the first time I have seen someone point out the direct problem and show how to fix it. After watching your video, I think I could do it, but I don't trust myself so will probably pay someone to install the part. Hopefully, this will fix it and I can get a couple of more years out of it.

Michael, regarding my previous comment, I was able to determine the cause of the 7 white 2 amber blink problem and I now have my laptop back up and running with the battery fully charged, all thanks to your excellent video. My only problem now is that the laptop is running very slowly. I did install a new hard drive, so maybe that's the cause. Anyway, kudos on your very useful video.

Now I have the same exact problem as your customer, where not only it's telling me it's plugged in but not charging but II accidently yanked that part out because the bottom part of the frame in that area was broken off. I went to go get this this fixed by a pro, but they just ordered me a new battery like I had already done and did nothing for me. I bet they didn't even check to see if it was the DC Jack, had they done so, it probably would've been fix. Waste of money. I don't have neither of the batteries on me now, but I'm gonna order one and see. Hopefully this'll fix it. And if it does, thank you so much. As well for helping take apart and put it back together again.

HP and Dell both allow you to start an update of a bios in Windows and then the computer restarts to make that update happen. Most other pc makes and motherboard manufacturers have you put a bios update on a USB flash drive and go into the bios to do the update. Your pc or motherboard maker should have directions on how to do it on their website.

Michael, believe it or not, another issue has cropped up with my Dell Inspiron 5559 laptop. Now, when it shuts down after not being used for awhile or if I shut it down manually, it won't power up. I used the suggestion of a "hard shutdown" which allows me to power up and restart the laptop, and it runs fine as long as it runs. But the shutdown required another "hard shutdown" to bring it back up. Any ideas?

Hello Michael, thank you so much, this is really great video and has helped me a lot in understanding disassembly and components of the laptop. Unfortunately, I am getting the same issue with the battery not charging. I replaced new battery, new AC adaptor as well and now replaced the DC jack, but still the problem is not solved. The white light turns on for a few seconds when I plug in the charger but then goes off. It says plugged in but does not charge. Any thoughts what should I do next to troubleshoot this issue. Would really appreciate your response. Thanks.

Exact same problem. Slow CPU speed. Power Adapter warning, so had to disable that in BIOS to be able to book. Power adater pin goes into DC Jack loose and has been for a while. And now battery is not charging by that power adapter. Ordered new power adapter, waiting for it to come in 3 days and see if that will solve it without having to replace the DC Power jack. Major surgery is needed to do it, but have nothing to loose as I got all data out and taking it for repairs elsewhere, who knows what they will charge for this $700 laptop and if that will even solve the issue. Great video. I was surprised you found all the right screws back to put into place. Dell by the way now has a new AR Assistant app that can help with disassembly, will try that out.

Thank you for wonderfull video. I face similar issue with my Dell Inspiron 5000, 5559 laptop. My CPU works at 0.29 - 0.32GHz speed instead of 2.6GHz. Does all Dell Inspiron 5000 5559 has same DC Jack? I am from Canada and on my Dell Inspiron 5000, 5559 has different type of DC Jack.. I don't see the inner pin covered inside plastic but its open. I see two aspects in the video, 1. replacing Jack and 2. Updating BIOS. Does replacing jack is must if CPU operated at 0.20 GHz or upgrading BIOS should be fine?
@MichaelTheComputerGuy
@MichaelTheComputerGuy Жыл бұрын
The CPU running at slow speeds like that means that the CPU is not getting enough power. It can be an issue with the AC adapter or DC jack. It could also be that you don't have the correct AC adapter. If it's not putting out enough wattage for the laptop it can lead to the CPU running slow like that. If you look on the bottom of the laptop you'll find where it has the voltage and amperage requirements which you can then take and figure out the wattage of the adapter you need. If that doesn't get it running at the correct frequency replace the DC jack next.
@MichaelTheComputerGuy
@MichaelTheComputerGuy Жыл бұрын
The bios settings changes you see me doing were required on this computer to get the CPU running at the correct speed. I have not seen that issue before or since so I don't know how common it is. However in that case in the video on that laptop it was necessary to go into the BIOS turn off all the power saving features save restart go back in and turn the back on in order to get the CPU running at the correct frequency.

That is common on these models. I had a Inspiron 3000 and within 6 months the DC Jack broke. I only had a basic warranty so I sent it in to Dell. Dell contacted me and said my DC Jack was bad and the motherboard had to be replaced and it would be like $430.00 and the Laptop cost $469.00. I knew that was B.S and I researched and found out the DC Jack dongle only cost like $40.00. They sent it back I managed to get it powered on connected to my TV because I removed the lid. I ran diagnostic test and the motherboard tested good. Dell told me the motherboard was bad after I explained to them about the dongle costing $40.00. I have seen this done without taking the motherboard out.

Yep .. no need to remove the board. On most of these Dells it's the plastic clip that breaks .. Dell cutting corners .. why not make the tab metal ...so it will break and you will send it to Dell and they can rip you off .. I swear these companies

SURPRISE - What I noticed first on my Dell laptop when I bought it, opposed to my ACER laptop, was the power supply plug coming straight out of the side of the laptop - Bad idea. Wonder why Dell never put the power DC power plug in the back of the laptop or gave you a power cord that was 90-degree plug. The way they have it now. with the plug coming straight out, it can cause more strain on the jack. Anyway, I hope I never have to replace my DC jack..... what a mess taking apart the laptop for such a small part. Must be big business for Dell to that job.
