Being attacked by pirates while working in the shop. That sure was a scary moment :)

There is a constant risk here of the studio being invaded by noisy children with no respect for the importance of my work. I've tried to be scary and grumpy to keep them away but it does not seem to work. 🤣

Hi Andrew, I have to be in the mood for odd jobs. I often turn to those when I am waiting for parts in the post. Cheers

I'll be famous yet...as for the envelopes, they're about 10 years old, quality is very rare these days! Cheers for the mention, and the stickers!

Only 10 years Owen? You should have got age-less perpetual glue models - now there's a market opportunity ..... keep it to yourself🤫 . Cheers

The grand daughters sure love their papa 🙂 I was thing dog point screw, but you did a great job of turning one, and saved the money for the girls an ice-cream cone later,,,hehe! Thx for sharing stickers too, THA - Bear

It's all of those little odd jobs that can soak up the time Paul. Always nice to get them done though. Have to agree about Max at Swan Valley though and what a nice workshop he has too. Looking at his plans from when he built it, it's a bit over 2,000 sq/ft, we can all dream. I'll have a look at the other two as well.

Hi Bill, every time I hear Max do his intro it makes me chuckle. No pretence or show, just no-frills Max and his extensive experience. Cheers

Hi Clive it comes in massively handy - I have another job on it now, which you will see in a vid in due course. Cheers

For your indexer, a slight taper on the pin would lock in and give a more positive location.

Nice useful improvement on the indexer, guessing a separate upright with clamp to backup sprung pin?. Max is an excellent machinist and fabricator, knows his stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Oh the filming bloopers... I am in a bit of a mess myself lately, and i tried making a few videos, but ultimately, i scrapped like 5 hours of recordings as i couldn`t even edit the parts into decent videos without a shot of morphine for every video... I picked up a whole load of stuff that i would like to capture on film and put out, but i`ll have to organize my ass a bit before doing so... Speaking of fancy motors, among the load of stuff i picked up are two Siemens cnc lathe motors, which is a major boon for any machine project that i will be doing in the future... And i don`t think that Owen will mind being called a scavenger... I am a proud dumpster diver, a scrapyard rummager, ``junk`` hoarder, and i don`t consider either an insult... It takes a degree of knowledge and assessment ability to deduce and procure good stuff in between all the actual junk to be found on scrapyards and elsewhere... Snobs and egomaniacs can never accept the notion, nor would they ever ``degrade`` themselves to that level, but i find it a sin when perfectly good stuff goes to waste and gets smashed and crushed - just because some ingrates who inherited a major shop or similar got it all thrown out because they have no appreciation for what someone worked hard to collect, maintain and preserve... Or large facilities that just scrap working equipment as a means of preventative maintenance so they don`t have to deal with equipment out of commission when it comes time to service a thing or a machine... Those who engage in salvaging such things are proud to do so and each find is a treasure of sorts... I mean, i recently picked up forkardt cnc 3jaw chuck(same lathe that the Siemens motors came off of) that is practically brand new... Along it came a forkardt hydraulic chuck closer, 3 heidenhain rotary encoders(absolute), 6 great condition used VDI toolholders and VDI clamps, those motors and a few other bits and bobs... Where is the shame in getting like 15k$(in store) worth of items in primo condition for 100$? I think that i can guarantee that Owen is fine with that title... Also, i like the rotary indexer you made... Recognized that wheel hub the instant i saw the thing in frame(i have a few hubs waiting for similar projects)... And that lathe nut is a damn nice thing, costly, but a fine piece to be sure... I could order one for my big girl lathe, but i need to establish which am. taper does she use, as her nut is quite a bit larger, however, the chuck is stuck, so i`m approaching it slow and gently... But i would not mind having two - just for kicks... All the best and kind regards! Steuss
@bootsowen4 ай бұрын
Hi Steuss, I think you've hit the nail on the head there. The trick is being in the right place at the right time!
@camillosteuss4 ай бұрын
@@bootsowen aaaah, it`s you! I see the reply, and i read the name, but it took me a second to recognize why it sounds familiar... Yeah, i am practically part of the inventory on that scrapyard, almost a member of the workforce, yet i still manage to miss out on things i wish i came across the moment they arrived... It`s a bitch finding a sandvik shell mill for inserts in a chips bin that someone misplaced, that got rained on and is now rusty all over... Or machines that come and get dickered by rain or other such equipment... But alas, one can not save every machine, rescue every puppy nor help every beggar and brother in need... All we can do is make the most out of what we come across and do our best wherever we go... Sometimes it can be profitable, sometimes the reward is entirely beyond the scope of material world... All the best and warm regards!
@HaxbyShed4 ай бұрын
Hi Steuss, good to have your comment. You sure got some good pickings with those items. Tools and parts are expensive and often I am tempted to make them to save money but my time is worth a lot even though it is 'free' to me. Recently I made a compound unipass 5/8in 5pti RH ACME tap and it will be a video mini-series soon but my goodness it was a lot of work to develop the skills and the machine setups. And actually the materials were not cheap either - tool holder + carbide bit + Delrin for prototype + silver steel for the tap + some gas for heat treatment + plus a small fortune in the swear box!! Cheers
@camillosteuss4 ай бұрын
@@HaxbyShed Yeah, i get it, you can either buy crap that won`t last a month of use, or you can spend a nasty amount, even for used stuff of quality that won`t fail you, but it`s costly!!! And then of course, you have the do it thyself approach, which while somewhat costly, can be managed and leveraged into minimal costs... Regarding materials costs, that is why i scrapyard dive... I have 0 intention of paying ridiculous amounts for materials that i can get for pennies per pound... Tho, one material that i can`t get for cheap is amazingly - plastic??? I can get high alloy steel for pennies, but not bloody plastic... Btw, i came back to the scrapyard, found that cnc lathe in pieces, but i located an Euchner absolute encoder that i missed the first few times i was salvaging componentry... I just looked up the encoder, the fucking thing brand new is 19k$... I was literally stunned for a moment... Used they sell for 1.7k$ or so around... there is absolutely no specifications on the encoder online, nothing, but that price is ridiculous... I got a 19k$ component for 15$... It`s a large encoder, but i don`t know what the hell justifies the dealer`s price... That is just stupidly expensive... I am going to keep it, no way that that thing leaves my hands... 3 heidenhains and now this... Tho, i`ll have to find out more about the thing before i put it to any use, as i don`t know what can it do - it has something like a 24 conductor cable, so it likely isn`t just a regular absolute encoder...

Are your indexing hole/pegs straight bore or tapered? Tapered will give you a lot more accurate indexing and reduce backlash. I don’t mind lathe cleaning, most of my days start and end with puttering.
@HaxbyShed4 ай бұрын
Hi pvtimberfaller, it's straight and like a sausage in a drainpipe. Off camera I have made another out of brass which is a lot better fit. Cheers
