In this video i will share with you a test of how and why my Honda HSS1332A tracked model suffers from a rare and much talked about chute clogging problem with slush. You might say this is normal when going against slush. But not in the Honda world of snow throwing it isnt.
My previous HS1332TAS never clogged no matter how much slush it encountered. It was a slush pump! So this can be a huge surprised for old Honda owners stepping up to the newest chute design.

As an emergency department doctor, I see missing digits and hands every year from people who reach into snowblowers that were turned off. A lot of potential energy can be store in a jammed impeller. I know this wasn't the case in this example but everyone please be careful and don't ever reach into jammed snowblowers (even when off).

I agree 100%, always safer to use a tool to break loose a stuck impeller or chute clogs. Just wish Honda would provide a scoop/spoon type clearing tool instead of a straight baton style clearing tool. Thanks for watching!

Richie at work, lead mechanic, telling us story about his Dad and Richie interaction. Richie, teenager wanting to help his Dad blow snow.. Dad lets him after extensive talk about not putting any part of your hand in that chute even turned off. Well Richie is driving snowblower up and down driveway, and then gets into heavy duty slush, and of course plugs. Shuts it off, looks over and doesnt see his dad, so puts his hand in chute and cleans whole area and no harm is done. Starts machine and is blowing walking towards the garage and his dad appears...waving, "Shut that machine off." Richie shuts it down and asks whats the matter? His father is a big man, real big, and is leaning over in front of Richie pointing to the ground, say.. "look at that right there, no, right there" Richie turns has back to his dad bent over... His dad rares up and swings back and kicks with all his might with toe of boot and kicks Richie directly in the crease of his butt. Hes up in the air down into the snow face first, completely covered in snow. Gets up half whimpering and asks "what was that for?" "I told you to never, ever to put your hand in that chute, and you disobeyed me." "Let that be a life lesson." I wish I could give this story justise, but we were all laughing until tears....and one thing..he never ever put his hand in a machine again...now hes retired..

I have the Honda 1332 bought 3 years ago. They had a service bulletin that came out to replace the chute under warranty for people having this issue of clogging. It is a modified chute with a lower scooped neck to prevent this from happening. I had it done right away as living in Massachusetts we always have wet snow!

After my trusty old HS8 gav in after more than 32 vintres of hard use - yes 32 sesongs taking care of a 200 meter long road the auger and the screw where absolutely grinded down to the bone. The engine where still running flawlessly - but the time where there to get myself another fresh and new nighbour admiring snow blower. In 32 sesongs I had 2 belts, 4 spark plugs, heaps of pins and some oil due to regular maintance. Remember this old HS8 where just that 8 horse with no variabel hydrostat - all mechanical which sucked the power out of the engine. And - one of the mods I did to it, where removing the safety guard from the chute. Everybody around had theyre Canadiana, Stiga, Briggs & Stratton powered all kind of types of blowers and they where all talking about how long the little HS8 where trowing the wet snow. Today I bought a HSS 1380A ET and cannot wait to see it goes trough the snow like a boss whilst everybody around struggles. Honda snow blowers are king of theyre class.

If you do not want to remove the collar, easy i have the same unit. When your moving the wet stuff and there is just a little your trying to move, just engage off an on your auger while in foward motion. Wait until you have more in the tunnel, engage the auger, until you see little coming out then shut off the auger again while moving forward. You do not stop forward movement. It just needs a certain amount of the wet snow in the tunnel to move it without plugging. Or remove the collar works too.

I have the HSS928ADT, yup, it needs snow and the more the better. I used to have the HSS828 for 23 yrs and never remember it clogging the way the HSS928 does, probably the auto swivel chute made them change the throat opening. Even silicon or anti stick spray doesn’t help much. But still, feed the beast, it’ll treat you well. 👍👍👍BTW, the chute shovel from the Arian blowers work so much better than the round rod from Honda. That and I carry a 2” mason slicker to clean out the throat.

Like you said "the tool is only as good as the person behind it". Reducing the working width after the first pass while still making sure that the impeller still fed and flowing enough to keep the chute clear, you will avoid leaving a spill-over trail and you avoid the problem altogether.

My neighbor had one of these small Honda snowblowers. I have an Ariens Hydro Pro, which is probably in the same price range (or maybe costs a little bit less). Although in dry snow his was comparable to mine, in heavy snow or in very wet slush, mine behave better, being far less prone to clogging. (what you refer to as "slush" in this video is only very damp snow, when I refer to slush I think about something only a smidge drier than slush-puppie). Don't take me bad; the Honda was a very good machine, being reliable and having a very robust engine, but I still prefer my Ariens with it's 420CC engine and bigger chute.

@@JohnFrancoNH The new Honda chute is similar to your design except the U isn't inverted, and the chute doesn't extend above the top of the U. Before the snow flies I'm going to attach 1/4" thick rubber extensions to the impeller blades. Rather than bolting them in place the way the kits on eBay do I'm going to try automotive weather strip adhesive, as the only stress on the connection is the centrifugal force from the rotation of the impeller. If it doesn't hold I can always go back and bolt them.

There is a video out showing how to resolve this issue. You add some material, rubber-plastic to the impeller fins. There is a fairly large gap between the impeller fins and the chute. I am going to give this a try. The person making this video says its an issue on a all brands.
@JohnFrancoNH
@JohnFrancoNH 5 жыл бұрын
Hondas do not need an impeller kit. Impeller kit is just a bandade for a poor design on other brand machines. But they do work. The clearance on the impeller on Hondas is less then other manufacturers. Which is what makes them great slush throwing machines straight from the factory. Thanks for watching!
@robertg.9964
@robertg.9964 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with John. It also depends on the model and chute design. I have a Toro 826 and the top part above the impellar and chute design is nothing like any other brand so because of this my snowblower has never clogged even when blowing 4"+ of just straight slush or 12" of snow with 2-3" of solid water soaked slush on the bottom. That adding rubber from a 1 stage rubber impeller to a 2 stage is for old snowblowers still using the impeller design Ariens uses today.

John. I'm the owner of an HS55 that I purchased in 1984. Since that time, I've used it to clear 2 - 3 driveways each season so it really has the use of an 85-year-old machine. I did give it a complete rebuild in 2001. It's still running strong only this year, I finally need a new scraper bar (which I can't find so I'll have to add metal to the old one). My question to you is, what prompted you to get rid of your previous machine?
@JohnFrancoNH

Glad to hear that your HS55 is running strong. The main reason for me to upgrade was because of the new track assisted steering and joystick remote chute. I have a long driveway that is not straight (multiple turns) and inclined, so having the assisted steering for easier maneuvering was a key factor for me to upgrade otherwise i would of stuck with my HS1332TAS.

I've always heard it called heart attack snow. My aunt's fiance actually had a heart attack and died shoveling heavy snow. Best advice I have is to start getting stress tests regularly at about age 50-55. My dad almost had a heart attack at age 51 and he has run a bunch of marathons. Ended up with a few stints.

Upgraded impeller? I would like to hear more... Sorry but box is not even overloaded. The main purpose of the video was me intentionally clogging it on the small trailings of slush/snow. Demonstration only. I did the whole 800ft driveway without it clogging. Its to illustrate that it needs a good steady feed of snow/slush in order for it to clear the chute. Once you come back for the small soupy stuff it doesnt have enough material to clear the slush that starts to form on the shelf inside the collar. Thanks for watching!

I have a lot of respect for the fine craftsmanship of Honda, but the hybrid machine you refer to is also $8000 + dollars USD. I don’t like the prices! The hybrid has 13hp and 36 inch cut. I don’t like the chute design of the newer models. They are all subject to clogging under the worst snow conditions. To modify the auger or chute of a Honda to prevent this is sacralidge. Especially when you just dropped 8 grand. I am not suggesting Honda is anything but a great machine, wash out my mouth with soap for even thinking such a thing. But price wise, Come on man! Toro 1432 is $2600. That’s 14 hp with 32 inch cut. But more importantly, the design of the auger case, impeller, and chute is what prevents clogging and throws the snow so far. Honda needs to change their chute design. In Michigan’s UP they get more than 300 “ most years. Some of that snow is wet and dastardly! The point is to get the job done and do it quickly.

Scott Gibson has a great hack! I do it to all my 2 stage snow blowers. I own a Honda with tracks (HS928as) a 7 ish year old one. Doesn't have the collar but does have the shelf. After doing sidewalks next to main roads with plow overspray. There is only one way to "fix" it. You need an old pair of Single stage paddles. Measure & cut the to fit the second stage fin & rub against the shoot. You will have to drill, bolt & loctite everything. I do this commercially and have yet to have a clog on a 2 stage after this mod! Search "supercharger your snowblower". I will confirm that is correct. Here is link to a different video with same purpose. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbCVrcJ5vticlH0.html

Greetings from Canada. I own a Yamaha YT928, not sold in usa , i guess. It does the same thing. Must be the throat design to increase snow velocity. Just my guess because the collar is half blocked like Honda. Both blowers brands are the best in my opinion, with great quality. Only problem for me besides the wet clog, is weight when turning with tracks. I have to physically manhandle the machine or do a full hydrostatic and spin it around. The next model up for Yamaha has a track steering . Mine is going on 6 years old w/o any serious issues. It has teflon in chute and impeller housing, and a serrated cutting edge. So teflon is not the answer to this problem.

Would you recommend spraying fluid film inside the auger and chute?
@JohnFrancoNH
@JohnFrancoNH 4 жыл бұрын
Zachary, the only thing i spray on my machine is Honda Spray Polish (detail spray) after the season is over just before i put the cover on it and park it. it really cleans up the machine nice and leaves all the paint and plastics conditioned. Spraying stuff in the chute and auger to me is short lived. So i dont bother. Spray film is and oil based fluid commonly used to protect truck frames during winter. But try it out and let us know how it works. A better alternative is silicone spray (very slick) or the stuff dupont makes, i forget the name. Thanks for watching!

Just purchased a new HSS928AT, it has the collar. I have not had the snow to try it yet. My old Areins, I would spray the chute with WD-40 or Armor All silicone, and had no problems. I agree with the "need to get a full load". I would shut off augers, while in drive until the housing was fuller, then hit the auger on, then shut auger back off until the next full load. Blowers tend to throw the snow further with a full load, thus clearing the driveway and preventing having to blow it again on the next pass.

Hey Bobby, Not that I own one, however I am seriously considering this model, my understanding is that this model has a hydrostatic transmission (fluid powered) and that you can go from one direction to another without having to fully stop the machine by letting off of the levers. Hopefully John will comment and be able to give you the official Honda owner answer, however I would bet dollars to dinars that he will tell you the same thing as I did. Take care :) Great video John
@JohnFrancoNH
@JohnFrancoNH 5 жыл бұрын
Aaron is correct. Thats the beauty of having the hydrostatic transmission. I love it and will never go back to the gear style machines, if i can help it. But transitioning from forward to reverse i still would do it gradually when you completely change directions. I say this because even though the machine can allow you to move that drive lever directly into reverse. The inertia of the machine still is going the other way. And the out come would be very jerky operation. I prefer the machine to almost come to a rest before the change. So if you allow for a gracefully transition there will be less stress on the mechanicals of the machine. I believe the hydro static unit can handle it. But its just the other related components you dont want to induce additional stress, fatigue, wear and which could possibly lead to backlash. Thanks for watching!

I can move 8" of snowplow slush across the road into my neighbor's yard if I wanted. 2 keys to remember, take 1/2 width cuts in the deep and wet stuff, not full width cuts as he shows in his video. Next, run full RPM, and keep your speed up, keep moving. Find the sweet spot in speed where it is clearing and blowing with out lugging the engine. I cleaned off that whole 900 ft driveway before doing the clogging demo with out a clog. What you mention as been tried before. A friend asked me for a few years back for help with his heated grips that he was trying to heat via heat transfer off the cylinder head with a closed system of liquid coolant. By using copper pipe plumbed into to the grips. It did not work. It never got hot enough. Then i suggested piping the exhaust thru the grips and it worked very well. And he ditched the original coolant idea.
