Huanyang VFD vs No-Name Copy - tear down, a look inside and what's left out

In a recent episode of the Mystery Project, we came across a HuanYang VFD copy which looks very similar, but it's actually a poorly designed fake. Other than the appearance, they don't have much in common.
It's not even significantly cheaper to buy, only cheaper made, apparently someone just makes more money here.
This video shows the internals of both, a genuine HY and the counterfeit VFD, also explains why the copy is not a good choice.
Huanyang VFDs are quite well built for the price and other than the lack of RFI filters and decent programming software, these are good value for money in standard applications. It's certainly a consumer product, therefore most likely not suitable for industrial applications for a number of reasons

best regards friend. Excuse me, I have a Haunyang frequency variator, it would be GT, that has the keyboard locked and does not let me change anything. the control light with external keyboard flashes. Do you know how the variator is respected to reset everything to the factory?

Looks a lot like the Nflixn vfd I got from Banggood last year. They must all borrow designs from each other. The Nflixn specified the breaking capacitor in the product code. It also had a blanking plate over the external break capacitor terminal.

Guess you talking about the Huanyang, because the fake does not even have the terminals for the resistor. Wonder what's inside your's, do you have a link of that ?

There's not much inside my drive as it's only a 2.2 Kw model. The capacitors are even placed on the outside between the heat sink.There are some photos in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fb5-qqdjvrzGoIE.htmlm18s Here you can see the terminals not needed covered by a little yellow tab.

Thanks, can't see any current transducers on your pictures, so it's probably similar to the junk model i've bought by accident.

I was able to enter the motor parameters and vectoring works fine.

I wonder how they doing proper field oriented control (vector mode) without current transducers,... not really buying into that, stickers and printed manuals may tell you alot of stories, but the proof is in the pudding ....:-)

Thanks Wayne,..., it's probably ok for very low key applications, but certainly not worth the few $ less to a Huanyang. Key point is,... if you can't enter motor data, the drive will only protect (maybe) itself, but not neccessarily the motor.

about US$185 for the real thing and i paid about $155 for the fake sometimes last year.

Not exactly cheap for either one. I guess I thought they were like 99 bucks or something. I think that brand is banned from discussion on Practical Machinist. Hopefully they both serve you well for as long as possible.

The $99 thingies are probably much less power, don't forget that this is the 4kW version. I am happy with the Huanyang brand one, you get what you pay for. An industrial grade Brand name 4kW/400V VFD is at least double the price.

Well,... i don't know in which time universe you live, but in mine we presently have 2018,... Therefore that video is over a year old, he also says it's fixed now ..... apparently he does not need help anymore.
