I know that President Jimmy Carter was an enthusiastic fan of Vladimir Horowitz. And Carmen variations which is played by Horowitz is extremely marvelous. His ten fingers show unbelievable moving on the piano keys. Incidentally, there are plenty of Horowitz fans in Japan too. from Tokyo

Just amazing....HOROWITZ It is so sad that some people who do not know or understand the piano do not realize the complexity of the notes and the fingering of pieces like this, NOT TO MENTION THE INDEPENDENT LEFT HAND AND RIGHT HAND MELODIES. To them, a pianist may as well be running his fingers over a FLAT table...they have no idea what is involved in playing a piece like this.

Incredible performance by the master. This piece is unbelievably complex and nearly impossible to play. Horowitz is 75 here and he just nails it.
@pianoman551000
@pianoman551000 Жыл бұрын
No, sorry but I was the reading the score while listening to this performance. At 2:18 he's almost off the rails with the piece, but recovers at 2:28. The rest of the performance is improvisation. So, he didn't "Nail it" as you suggest. This recital was not one of his best. He was being medicated for depression and it showed in the technical portion of his playing, but his artistry was still superb as ever. No pianist could create a colorful palate of sound like Horowitz.

you wouldn't believe that a man existed with such talent till you actually see a video of it. Not only is Horowitz a hell of a performer, he composed this variation, and its fair to say no matter Lang Lang or Yuja Wang... not many accomplished classical pianists could compose such a masterpiece while not being originally a writer but a performer by training and profession. Horowitz is peerless.

Horowitz is one of the greatest pianists and musicians that ever lived, which I’ve written many comments about. It’s interesting to recognize, though, Horowitz’s political impact (dare I say showcase) and the patriotism he effused. Horowitz and Van Cliburn were enormous “high culture” figures for America to tout during the peak of the Cold War

I agree with those who consider Vladimir of a type of man that really broke the mold , I cannot imagine another person even similar to him coming along now or ever..I believe his generation held many geniuses musically from Russia born in the late 1800's to early 1900's and the same caliber of men being born in America, Germany, England, around those times..

He wrote this arrangement in the 1920s and he played variations of it throughout most of his concert career. The 1968 Carnegie Hall recording which was live was one of the best and the transcription of the music is available.

Horowitz plays with such a speed as if he had three normal hands in each one of his. This composition should be renamed : Carmen Variations on six hands by one pianist. At one moment I expected the piano to blow up into little pieces and the PC monitor to burn. The cadenza made me dizzy... The President probably dizzy too was lucky not to fall down after getting up to greet Horowitz.
