***** Big Boss became a slave to war. He was addicted to the battlefield like a fat kid addicted to the buffet table, that he started fighting for no reason. Remember what he said at the end of Peace Walker, "we need no reason to fight." Solid Snake, on the other hand, after MGS1, he became a free man and only fought for what he believed in, not because he was addicted like Big Boss, and unlike Big Boss, he actually *succeeded* in destroying Cipher rather than become a comatose prisoner. In fact it was Solid Snake's example that inspired Big Boss to admit he was wrong and finally choose to put down his gun at the end of MGS4.

Solid Snake is a better man than Big Boss. Big Boss himself even tells him that at the end of MGS4. Yeah Snake followed orders and ended up being a sympathetic pawn of the patriots, but he always fought for the greater good and for a better future-whereas Big Boss was stuck in the past and always wanted to keep war going as a routine so that soldiers could feel like they had a place in the world. He didn't follow the Boss's will because she didn't care about fighting against the machine, or making soldiers more respected that they were-she cared about fighting for a better future. She too followed orders, to her own death even-why? Because she knew it was for the greater good and so that there wouldn't be an all out war between America and Russia. Big Boss wasn't a villain, but he was hardly a hero either. He fought for his own motives and selfish reasons just like Zero and Skull Fave and others. The only difference is that Big Boss had slightly better morals, but he still was selfish in most of his goals and desires. Solid Snake is the true selfless hero.

In fact, the only reason Big Boss (the real one) sends Solid to Outer Heaven is because Solid at that point is a newbie in FOHOUND. BB expects Solid to fail. At the end of MGS V we see a scene taking place in "Outer Heaven", in which the cassette has writings - "From the man who sold the world" on one side and "Intrude N ..." on the other. Intrude N312 and N313 were FOXHOUNDS operations on taking down Outer Heaven, which indicates that Big Boss gives Venom info on one of the operations - either Grey Foxes one (N312) or Solid's one (N313). It is even possible Grey Fox was sent by BB as a messager to Venom, or having the enactment of "failed mission" in mind.

It's possible he reflected on his past actions and felt guilt; but in my opinion, no. Otacon never talks about his dad except how he drowned Emma. That makes me think they never had that healthy of a relationship so I think my original theory stands.

When he married Julie Danzinger (Emma's mother), Julie had an affair with Hal, and Emma was caught in the middle. Hal never resisted her - probably as a means to 'get even' with his dad, as Julie *did* seduce him - and when Huey discovered this, he figured he'd take away the only thing Hal held dear, who was Emma. Huey needed an insurance policy, and he gets rid of those he thinks are in the way. But he is still a coward. In this case, he dragged Emma into the pool with him, knowing that he'd shame both his son and his wife. He didn't intend Emma to get loose, that's true, but whether Emma really liked Huey is never known. Her mother married three times. Emma left as soon as she was 17.

Even when snake found out that he was a pawn of the patriots, he didn't rebel like Big Boss did-he still fought for what he believed in and in the end he saved the entire world and brought down the Patriots. You can say Big Boss is a more interesting character and all, but snake is a better hero. End of story.
