Who loves GIANT estate sales? points THIS GAL!
This huge estate sale is of a dressmaker in South Carolina who just locked her doors in 1981 and walked away from the store she owned. 40 years later, myself and two other vintage KZfaqrs are getting access to hundred of yards of deadstock vintage fabric, vintage patterns, vintage trims and all other kinds of vintage clothing and jewelry! I will show you a taste of my estate sale haul, but that will primarily be the second video in this series. But there are still estate sale finds to be seen in this video as well.
I wanted to know more about Miss Ruth of Olanta, South Carolina, so I sat down with South Carolina Pickers to chat about the estate sale and her life.

I'm laughing and crying at the same time. You took me back to my high school days. Momma would take me to fabric shops. We would buy any and everything we wanted. Daddy would write the check, no questions asked. "It's fine, Girls. You're not spending my money on booze or gambling." They were so wonderful. Thanks for taking me there.

I love estate sales because I feel like I get to know the person just by looking at what they treasured. I like nothing more than finding an "old lady sewing basket" filled with their things and diving in and seeing what they loved, what tools they used, little scraps of projects and notes. It's like an amazing time capsule. I'm so glad you got to experience it!

These is the type of fabric store inventory I remember. My mother and grandmother were professional seamstress. My mother sewed most of my clothes when I was growing up. Seeing these drawers of patterns triggered all my memories of going to pick out things I wanted her to make. Thank you for sharing this ❤

I just found your channel and am blown away by so many things. First of all, as a 68 year old lady I am so impressed by the fact that there’s a younger generation who appreciates all of this. I can’t help thinking how the lady who owned all of this would feel to have the three young ladies come in and appreciate the inventory so much. Secondly, my imagination is going crazy thinking of all the creations that will come out of this stock for many years to come. And…I’m so impressed with all the hard work that the seller has done to get all of the items displayed and ready for sale. My grandmother was a dressmaker and I remember when I was a very little girl watching her make clothes for ladies. They’d come in with a bag of fabric, notions, and a pattern and a week or so later they’d come pick up a beautiful dress on a hanger. My grandmother passed away when I was 8 so these memories come from the late 50’s and early 60’s which is an era with, in my opinion, some very beautiful styles. My favorites were when she’d make the net evening gowns with layers of tiny ruffles. One day I’ll retire and have time to sew again. When that happens I’m going to look for your shop on eBay and probably spend way too much money.

This is incredible. And kind of heartbreaking that this kind of person with clearly such immense talent and skill to make people’s wardrobes from scratch got to a point they walked away (although to be fair it sounds like she did it for decades so maybe she was happy to be done!). And I think it’s so sad that this sort of business doesn’t exist anymore because it’s all about fast fashion to most people nowadays who don’t appreciate clothes and the time and effort and skill it takes to make them and that they are only cheap because of sweatshops basically. There must have been thousands of Miss Ruths and similar all over the world who were respected business people and now they essentially don’t exist. That’s just so sad to me. But it’s so beyond wonderful that you got to tell her story and talk to her friend. And now that you get to experience and purchase this treasure trove of fabrics and patterns and notions is fabulous!

Dear Ms. Stephanie - you have just passed a landmark. Not only did I sit through two commercials (hey, Algorithm, is this enough interaction fer ya). But the second commercial was for 007. Shaken, not stirred. Well done. Sewing Warrior Princess. Your marching orders for Halloween (unless you're already knee deep in the spooky, in which case, I'll hush). I'd say you were restrained. The cabinet alone. Damn. And a repeat of the hippy fabric needs to go into a frame. We have wild turkeys to the south of the city (yes, please insert mandatory Canadian animal joke here... but hey, ya'll, least we still got animals). The turkey's occasionally show up in traffic updates. As do the deer to the west of the city. And the every 10 year bear wandering around Parliament Hill. Then there was that moose in the swimming pool back in the 80's... Anyways. If it had hit your car you'd be carrying home Christmas dinner to boot... just saying... - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown

@@StephanieCanada Did you get to go back for patterns and more fabric? Please tell me you did! I started sewing in the early '70s and would have loved some of that fabric for my bellbottoms and smock tops that were so popular. So maybe she had some patterns from those days to make with it! The first thing we made in Home Arts, that was what Home Economics was called in those days, was a bibbed mini skirt. LOL I think the year was 1972. I also made several pairs of elephant bells, bell bottoms with 40 inches around the bottom, with a fly zipper too! Then I stopped sewing after having kids and working, and only started again about 10 years ago, 3 decades later! Love your channel, you are so fun to watch!😊

Fabric and such sitting for 30-40 years, does it retain their strength & color? My MIL recently left behind a lot of material & patterns. I am encouraged to take what I can use, but I am afraid of it falling apart in the wash like her lace kitchen curtains started to do.

This is like the vintage sewist equivalent of that apartment in Paris that hadn't been touch since World War II...I have often said that I would selfishly use a time machine to shop and watch plays with my favorite actors and I fell like you found your personal time machine setting.

Spec tac u lar! Subed other 'Tubers. Particularly love this Road trip Vlog/Chat Interview/Americana format. I realise not all purveyors will be as accommodating and informative as the Lady managing the Estate sale, nor will all estate sales have such a facination backstory, but when possible, yes, more of This. This post was awesome.
