I wish I was creating a clickbait thumbnail when quoting $18,056.34 in repairs bills and maintenance costs, but I'm not.
This is how much I have spent on my 2014 Toyota Landcruiser 200 series 1VDJ V8 twin turbo diesel in the last 12 months alone.
I will concede that some of the repairs have been as a result of aftermarket modifications and accessories, but a large chunk has not.
In this episode I outline all of the issues and costs involved in rectifying them that I've encountered in the last 12 months.
This video is out there to create awareness and prepare those who are looking to travel, just like I'm doing. It's not all sunshine and rainbows like some content creators make it out to be but on the other hand please don't let information like this discourage you. There is no reality where Teagan and I would ever regret travelling around Australia while our kids are at this age and money is just that, it's money. It comes and it goes...

MORAL TO THE STORY: Keep everything as stock as possible and work hard at keeping your weight down. And if possible try to do as much maintenance as possible (not easy for some I know). Great video mate. Thanks for the update👍
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 10 ай бұрын
Adding modifications sure do add another level of complexity, however I will stated that the turbo failure, starter motor failure and leaking intercooler (all the expensive items) were issues without modification. It is disappointing, but it is what it is in the end. Either way, we are lucky we had some savings and we are back on the road having a trip of lifetime 👍

Better to do your own maintenance. Not only save thousands, you know the work has been done, especially brake checks. $18k buys everything you've replaced & the tools to do the jobs required yourself. My old Cruiser has just passed 1.7 million k's. Imagine the costs if I'd let others have at it? Very informative video! 👍

Can’t carry lots of tools on the road though, space runs out quick, weight adds up quick. Sounds like the starter motor replacement needed a workshop rather than a campsite or caravan park. There’s only so much you can do when travelling…
@KevinD_33x150
@KevinD_33x150 Жыл бұрын
@@FarqueKnowsWhere Maybe so, as far as carrying all tools is concerned. Most jobs use the same tools, with a only a few required. The non critical (fail to proceed type) can sometimes wait.

Yeah, for sure. Much to be saved from your own work. As mentioned here though, much thought to do it on the road. Things like turbos and starters really need a shop and machining the front rotors would be impossible as you could carry them there. But I hear what you are saying, we pay for the benefit to enjoy our time on the road 👍

@@XploringOz As they say, convenience costs. Due to my line/s of work, I find myself in some "interesting" situations from time to time, having to repair things on the fly. Having access to machining equipment is difficult at times, having to nurse things to wherever they are at. Thankfully, not for my vehicle! My Mrs gave up complaining about my trashed shirts & shorts years ago. It took a while for her to get it. "Bean counters"! 🤣

@@KevinD_33x150 unless people have done or are doing The Lap or extended travelling, don’t know what they’re talking about on R&M and servicing on the go. There’s no shed, no tool cabinet, no bench, most times no concrete, or mates to come round and give ya a hand or there’s several days wait for a tradie. Waiting for things to fail is not how you do extended travelling especially if there’s remote or harsh conditions..

Turbo's and dusting issues are unfortunately far too common more so on a stock VDJ than those fitted with a quality aftermarket airbox. Nathan has worked much harder than most to mitigate these issues but unfortunately once the damage is done it is only a matter of time before they fail sadly.

Very good review. I owned a new 40th anniversary and it was worked very hard as a tow vehicle but never off road. Superb quality. My 2014 Colorado also new but I use it as a tow vehicle and completely reliable. But and this is the huge difference I don't use my vehicles for the extreme adventure your 200 has been used for. I think my Colorado's reliance on electronics would result in failure pretty quickly. I don't think the seals would stand up to immersion. It is one of the Big pluses of a 1960s Landrover or cruiser they are really simple and robust. And easy to change all fluids after immersion. But of course they cannot tow a load like a 200. And old school is very inefficient and expensive on fuel.

Good update, and an honest one at that. Pleased to see your keeping the vehicle. I was originally looking at a 200 series but ended up buying a 2005 GU Patrol factory TD42, for its simplicity, reliability and ease of repairs. Had it coming up two years now and it’s only ever seen a mechanic for a road worthy since buying. I’m lucky that I have time to maintain it myself and also learn how stuff works / goes together. Hope your trip is going well and the cruiser gives you no more grief.

With only 155kW and 450Nm, why is it even called mighty? That really is 4 cyl Hilux / D Max territory. And the Isuzu 4jj3 engine will last at least half a million clicks. So, this 4.5V8 seems a bit too much for too little. Toyota factory fitted Mercedes-Benz engines to Landcruisers; different engine types incl the Unimog OM314 4 cyl. But on the 300, Toyota opted for petrol and Diesel Mazda V6 engines.

Still don't understand why people continue to do deep water crossing"s without tarp over the front. The time it takes to fit and the benefits of not flooding the engine bay is huge hot alternator hot starter hot idler pulleys all suck water in not only that but the benefits of not drowning all electrical connections especially in high humidity areas. Just make up a canvas tarp that clips onto top radiator support after lifting the bonnet and tuck it down behind the bullbar. Cheers mate love your topics.

It proves that the vehicle is quite strong. The failures you experienced are primarily due to heavy modification you have done and punishment you are giving it. Greater chunk of the costs seems point towards upgrade failures. Cv joints, brakes rotors, diffs, transmission will mean you have to upgrade to match increased weight.

The vehicle is incredibly strong, however turbos, starter motors and brake rotors (rears only) indicate other problems than that caused from my mods. The rear brakes had an issue, whether it be debris caught up within or not checked properly last service, but turbos and starters haven't been modified and shouldn't be failing.

Personally with my LC 200 no deep water crossings ,I have see many modern 4wd with electronics destroyed in Nolans brook & other crossing on th cape . The problems on friends LC electronics keep occurring for years due to corrosion on plugs terminals ECU etc. We did all those crossings on the cape in simple old Hiluxs and old Landrovers no electronics, water flows in and out few issues. Im sure you cant drive without listening for something to go wrong. Seems it was those water crossings that have led to your issues. Hope it was worth it. Re electrical issues. Simple is better. Seems you've created your own monster. Reasonably stock cruisers with a few mods seems to be the way to go And a lot less stressful. Cheers and happy travels Paul

Better to do your own maintenance which I do while on the road will save you heaps of money and you really get to know your vehicle as you say it does not take long for the services to come along.I change my oil usually at 5000k or 7000k depending where I am oil is cheap engines are not and I only use genuine filters and I do carry parts with me. I must admit I don`t modify the tranny or the motor just to keep it reliable which my GX 200 has been so far. I tow a 3.2 tonne caravan and I find the motor has plenty of power for what I want to do.

Yeah, they have their towing benefits, but you do still need to consider their GVM for the mid size variants. The RAM 1500, F150 Chevy 1500 all have similar GVM weights as the cruiser which can cause issues. The larger 2500 models or full size Utes are seriously expensive... They have their benefits don't get me wrong, but I love the LC200 and the short wheelbase 4WD's for the tracks .
@bobzed57
@bobzed57 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your real world experience. I'm interested in your weights while towing. I have 2019 VX with the Lovell's GVM upgrade which allows 2T on the rear axle. @larkhill2119

Brake overheating can be caused by the new brake fluids attacking the rubber hose on the inside. Brakes work fine at normal temperatures but when hot the brake caliper pressure cannot release and the problem becomes a feedback critical. Have a feel when bleeding brakes how much pressure you need to bleed that can indicate the inside of the hose restriction.

Hi Troops, I would have pushed it with Toyota. 5 months out of warranty is crap. Under Australian consumer law a product must be fit for purpose. I would suggest a 200 series cost you heaps of cash and you would reasonably expect an unbreakable Toyota turbo to last longer. Cost vs product. 2 dollar pen lasts 4 months ok. 200 series new 90 to130 $ a turbo which is not a normal wear item like brake pads, tyres, belts etc. The motor and all the parts associated with it should do a couple of hundred thousand kays minimum. Toyota are bastards in this regard read DPF on 2.8 Hiluxes, Prados etc. They are being fined millions and class action lawsuits are going after them for hundreds of millions. Next time this happens tell whoever for whatever you buy you goods must be fit for purpose. 155kay for a turbo is not fit for purpose.

If you're travelling around Australia, you're naturally going to rack up the kms, get stone chips, wear out parts and need services more regularly. Driving your 4WD in water so deep it's up near the windscreen is naturally going to cause electrical problems. Also, because the turbo, running gear and so forth is running hot, as soon as the water hits it, it suffers from rapid thermal stresses and this causes problems. Impressive river crossing though. I don't think many modern 4WDs could get that deep without issues.

We left Perth 9 months ago, had clutch replaced again, brakes also done as caravan brakes stopped working (hard to tell with proportional braking and if you drive smooth generally), and also had car re-tuned over here as couldn't cope with the altitude either and had a lack of power over 500m altitude ;p Probably around $10k all up. I'm dropping my oil myself now and changing filter every 7,500km and getting a mechanic to service every 15,000km and do all filters and oils inc diffs if required - a little step but keeps the cost down a bit and the extra oil changes should aid longevity.

On the diff and transmission 'thing' - if there are no slip codes you don't need to replace those fluids. That said, delay transmission fluids if there are slip codes - that's a rebuild, but you can keep going for a while. The most expensive mistake overlanders make is to "replace all fluids". Garages love that theme. If you want to do a lap, don't do 500Km a day, do 200Km hops or even go down to 50Km hops.

I’ve done all repairs on my 100 series at home in my driveway and my total cost ( I keep a spreadsheet ) after all maintenance over 4 years is $4700 You can save a lot of money doing it yourself.

For sure, but when you are on the road, you don't exactly have a driveway. I know it's possible, but on the road I pay for the privilege and convenience to have my vehicle serviced 👍

@@XploringOz I'm guessing you'd agree the turbos is the worst part, at that price and given it's far from warranty you'd be better off with A/M turbos would be my thinking? The vehicle itself has slightly less than average k's. Brakes is to be expected and some maintenence in every car gets overlooked from time to time that's why we need careful and meticilious mechanics, many get a bit careless. Happy adventures mate.

@@livingadamman7994 For sure, the turbo's were the biggest hit and not really something that I've caused through my method of driving or modifications. I thought about AM, but I was extremely time restricted and needed to get back on the road, unfortunately. Thanks mate 👍
