Today we talk about the two models of Landcruiser made by Toyota. Of course we are referring to the Toyota Prado 150 series and the Toyota Landcruiser 200 series. There are not many manufacturers out there that make two highly capable off-road vehicles in their lineup, so today we talk about the differences and whether or not we think the 200 series is worth the extra $$$.
We are in a fortunate position to comment about these vehicles. Purchasing the the 2014 Toyota Prado 150 GXL in 2017 and completing driving scenarios both on and off-road in both a stock and modified form.
Following this we purchased our 2014 Toyota Landcruiser 200 Sahara in early 2019 and have also completed similar driving scenarios in both stock and modified forms.
In this video we discuss the major differences and advantages/disadvantages of both models.
00:00 - Intro
02:10 - Dimensions and weights
04:00 - On road drivability
07:01 - Off road drivability
10:20 - Fuel Consumption

15:37 - Engines and Power
17:09 - Towing
19:05 - Pricing
19:49 - Our thoughts
We hope you enjoy today’s video and hope those who are considering purchasing or upgrading their vehicles are able to get some value and points to consider from it.

Great car so far... fingers crossed 🤞 and same colour as your old one 😂. Anyway until recent no additions other than a tow ball and controller. Have decided it is a keeper for a while and am getting some TJM kit, T13 bullbar/lift kit/Airtec snorkel fitted shortly. Can’t wait for the adventures. Nice comparison, great video Nath! Well done! We have a 200 GX 2015 and she'll be with us for several more years but the plan would be to switch to a Prado as next car/4wd. We use the 200 mainly for 4wding in the VHC, she is not a fancy car but definitely does her job in the bush properly. I believe the price for a Prado GXL is very similar to a 200 GX so for us was a trade of "bells and whistles " against "size and powerhouse". Cheers

And for anyone who has now decided to get a 200 series, you'd better be quick. Probably no time left to get an order in for a new one, as Toyota will no longer be building them from March 2021, as rumour has it. Over to the upcoming 300 series. Second-hand 200s that have been looked after are now in high demand and selling for very high prices.

@@XploringOzI've owned a self-built Transit van for 3 years and slept in it for 15 months. I needed a more capable and nimble rig to go from Mexico south for a longer trip. I thought long and hard for a few years on a Troopy or an 80/81 or a 100 and a few others. In the end, it was just harder to buy the "right" vehicle here in Canada. So when I saw an Alu-Cab Canopy Camper I figured it ticked enough boxes for me to go ahead with it paired up to a 2013 Tacoma Access cab with a 4.0L petrol automatic. So in a single week in November, I bought both. Now I'm happy and broke. (the accc gets installed in January) Let the build begin.

Great video folks. I would have like to known your thoughts if you’d done a GVM upgrade on the Prado as well. I’d assume body roll would have been significantly less like the Cruiser with its GVM upgrade. Also I wonder what the difference would be between tow capacity (not that much I suspect) however you can’t beat the awesome power of the cruisers V8. Either way, Toyota all the way. Happy camping and keep up the good work.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it. So no, we hadn't done a GVM upgrade on the Prado. Fitting stiffer springs (essentially the only difference) would have definitely reduced some body roll. Saying this, the KDSS system works very differently and would likely still provide an advantage. So in terms of towing, these pre-facelift model Prado's can only tow 2.5t where the 200 series is rated to 3.5t. So there is a little difference there, but also take note that the new Prado models can now tow 3.0t, so that difference is lessened. Thanks mate, Nathan.

Hey mate, I do believe that the Prado will get pretty much anywhere the LC200 will, but it definitely won't have that extra grunt behind it. For example when towing, the LC200 will cruiser up steep hills, whereby the Prado will slow down even when the accelerator is buried. The Prado will still get there in the end, however it will be maxed out while doing so and probably be slowing down. The Prado is still a very capable vehicle 👍
@1samwhich
@1samwhich 3 ай бұрын
That's interesting about the newer Prado's losing all their oomph on the hills. I've got a 2000 95 Series 1KZ-TE Prado which I've been modifying to buggery trying to overcome that problem and make highway driving/maneuverability more safer and tolerable. I've had a some good success giving the engine more fuel and boost with a Unichip Q4 and a Stage 1 high-flow turbo. But it's a balancing act with the EGTs for sure. You almost want to go bigger intercooler at this point as well as the stock one isn't doing much anymore. So yeah, I think these little 4 cylinders are under powered for the weight of the cars but also tuned very safely from factory, resulting in this gutlessness on hills. But the potential for improved performance is there.

@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, appreciate the feedback. If you are buying a brand new car and have the opportunity to modify things like the GVM pre-rego, this is derisible. The ability to modify the vehicle pre-rego allows for more options and parts to be fitted then if you were to install/modify after registration. It's probably best to speak with a fitter for the latest information on kits and legislation as it seems to change reasonable often.

Definitely pre-rego. Post-rego the gvm upgrade is only compliant in the state of registration. That is, say you get a moderate upgrade done in NSW and then drive to QLD, then the original GVM is what is legal in QLD. You'd probably never run into problems, but when it comes to selling it, then the GVM is only current in say, NSW.

The prado I find having owned both vehicles is more than capable as you mentioned yet u need the vx or sahara model with the kipps suspension..makes a big difference and it has more features. My pref is the prado if your commuting in the city most the time..a great vehicle offraod also. I've tow.the same van..have to agree..lacking up hills and the head wind..I have though noticed a big difference running the car whilst towing in sports..not in general drive gear. Less hunting on.the gears and less strain on the motor in low revs in 5th I found. I've installed a sensor on the gearbox for the added comfort of not cooking it. One big difference on the lag for towing and take-off..buy an idrive unit! Couldn't believe the difference in the car...chalk.and cheese and cheap...less than $200. I use it towing and when I need to take off at the lights quicker if need be. Works off the accelerator throttle body.. not a chipset. Great unit. I too loved the 200 series ...too big for the wife and hassle of parking the unit in the city etc..let alone the deadshits parking next to you and boxing you in or denting the doors. If your towing a big van or boat..no worries. Hands down and the power is worth it...if your not.. my pref the prado. $20k in the pocket and their rated higher towing these days and specd up a bit more. Again..if toyota rated the prado higher and gave it a little more poke I'm sure the sales of its bigger brother would plummet..clever marketing ploy..

Toyota have definitely won with their marketing and design of both these vehicles.

Interesting mate. I've had my 2017 Sahara for nearly 4 years. The first 18 months were stock, then modified pretty much the same as yours (and the dozens you see come out of ARB). As a matter of comparison with fuel usage, the stock (pre-modified) one with a mix of urban/highway/offroad/onroad/towing (2T boat) etc. came in at a "lifetime" economy of 11.2L/100K. Interesting timing. We needed to get a new car, due to my Camry not fitting us all now in due to an extra person joining us lol and my refusal to drive a people mover. I couldn't afford the Saraha, but a few weeks ago found a killer priced 2014 Prado Kakadu so we got that. There are some things I like better. For example, the Prado does it's 3rd row much better. I do not like the 200 series fold to the side design and do like the barn door as we need it so the eldest can actually get into the car as the entry via the 2nd row is not possible. I can say the Prado with KDSS does fix a lot of that body roll. The only thing I hate is the Toyota head unit, they really need to fix that. In terms of power, Toyota is notorious for detuning their cars to fit into "brackets" and to not compete with other cars in their range. For example my Camry V6 (1mz) was detuned so as not to compete with the non-turbo Supra, they couldn't have the Camry beating their sports car lol. A simple change to the sister engines intake cams (2mz) and a replacement of the merge at the bottom of the engine and you're pretty much on par with the non-turbo Supra. Get a good custom tune (not those stupid chips) and you can boost the power to a more reasonable level. The new power figures that Toyota have on their newer Prado's are proof that they are safe.

Good to hear about the KDSS though, I thought this might be the case, I'm sure it would be a distinguishable difference. I agree with the power limitations. Each of these vehicles are designed for a targeted and specific market and the differences need to exist to maintain this market and provide interest for both models. People just need to be more informed, or, in some cases, not be so ignorant to some industry insight and take it on board, which is hard to do when so many have a thick skull.

@@pheonixfps9248 Hey mate, interesting to hear of your experience as a mechanic. I'm about to soon splash out on my first newish 4x4. I've had my 1999 LandCruiser 100 series diesel (non turbo) for 11yrs and had no issues at all, 300,000kms. Going to keep it as my fishing, bush bashing, dog carting old beast. I'm leaning towards the Nissan Patrol Y62 V8 petrol series 5, over both the Prado and 200 series. What do you reckon?

@@wozandnic review the towing results for starters. Don't let people con you on the hype because they're a petrol v8 they're thirsty. They're not. Buy all accounts, I will also be buying a 62 down the track. Have seen and heard some minor gremlins with the transmission ecu, the cats in the past, and timing chain woes in the s1-s3 RARELY, but nothing negative in the newest model. Most of the 62s rarely have issues, but these are the ones we know from time to time rear their ugly heads. If you do consider taking it off road in a hard-core fashion later on, ditch the HBMC suspension. The 100 series 1hz is a solid motor and even magical in the 1hdfte guise. I would love to buy a 1hdfte and stick it in my 4x4.

@@pheonixfps9248 Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It refreshing to speak with someone who can provide more detail than "Toyota is crap". I'm all for talking about the good and bad points on any vehicle, modification or product I buy, however I can only speak about the experience I've had, as I don't have the amount of experience as a mechanic like yourself. Rest assured, if engine problems come to light, I'll be reviewing and speaking about them honestly. I have nothing to hide on this channel, nor am I endorsed or paid to promote any vehicle manufacturer in any way. I completely understand your concerns in regards to Toyota's problems and their lack of action to admit, or rectify issues raised. In your opinion, what manufacture and more specifically model or vehicle would you recommend for a family wanting a large SUV with a capable 4WD system and tow rating?

Although there are a few D4D 3.0L's out there with this, I wouldn't say it a underlying issue with the model of the vehicle. I think the total number of these engines in the market need to be taken into consideration as well. Although there may be a few issues there are 10's on thousands of these engines sold every month in Australia, so there are bound to be some issues. I wouldn't base the vehicle of an issue with the minority. All personal opinion though...

You haven't considered the GX model 200. I bought a new 2020 GX 200 for 76K, spent 35K on Superior 4inch GVM upgrade, bullbar, winch, rear bar, diff locker and heaps more. Still less than a new VX and without all the electronic nonsense that will fail on you after enough corrugations.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
For sure. I didn't consider this as they are not overly common in Australia. Further, the Prado is also manufactured in a GX spec as well and the price differences are still relatively similar. Although I see where you're coming from in regards to the electronics, I do have a slightly different opinion on that matter. Although a car like my '14 Sahara is full of electronics, none of these 'additional' electronics is going to stop my vehicle from finishing a track over a GX model. Parking sensors, electronic seats, infotainment systems, fancy dash screens can all fail without effecting the drivability of this vehicle. The engine, driveline and running gear are identical and full of electronic components that are equally susceptible to failure. I'm not disputing that the GX models have many advantages and are simpler, however I'm yet to hear of someone becoming stranded due to a broken centre console fridge or quad zone climate control. Keep in mind, this logic changes slightly with the newer models with lane guidance and radar cruiser as these systems will effect drivability, however recognising these systems are also installed in all models starting from GXL these days.

The real question is not do you like it better its is it worth the 20-25k more? Either way that's a subjective question based on your budget and how much worth you ascribe to the benefits. But nonetheless that is the real question. Good video though a nice comparison. I just wish we got the diesels here in the US. Diesels have been marketed as evil polluters that will make the glaciers melt and polar bears drown and nobody wants to be guilty of that!

For sure. For me personally, it's all about value and whether or not I would get the value from the extra cost with the features that come with it. Me personally, using the vehicle frequently, I get that extra value. Too bad about the limit access to diesel's over there, they really are awesome engines.

The turning circle is much better on the Prado, your comparing OEM spec. The advantage of the bigger wheels on the 200 also ruins the turning circle and reduces power and further reduces economy. Bare in mind smaller/lighter is often better offroad. The Rocky and Jimny are considered among the best.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the modifications definitely effect things like turning circles, however keep in mind the Prado is also running larger than OEM tyres as well. I agree with the weight and size, I guess it all comes down to personal requirements and how many people you are planning on carrying in the vehicle.

@@XploringOz @XploringOz Yes, they sold the 200 as the "Land Cruiser V8" until 2015 or so but discontinued it because the 1VD-engine doesn't meet current emission standards. The second-hand car market is fairly limited and expensive because most of the vehicles are either of the top trim level or armored. There are a couple of dealers who import the 200 and 70 with the different gasoline engines from the UAE, though. I love my 150! It's a true all-rounder, great for traveling and as a light-duty utility vehicle. Sadly we only get the flat tailgate option so no auxiliary tank, which would be useful on longer trips.

If your are in a position to purchase a brand new 2021 GXL Prado for $65k in Western Australia, then you're in a good position.
