*Gotta edit this cuz ppl are rightfully concerned and don't understand that I was exaggerating in the Description box*
Peanut, an older, fully checked out horse without Cushings or any other type of illness, normally sheds out all at one time. That means his hair decides to fall out altogether and makes him look like a neglected wooly mammoth. Today I'm gonna take all that hair off of him and share with ya'll how crazy quick (and honestly very efficiently) this horse sheds his winter coat. I wish the video was longer and more thorough but i'm still having technical difficulties.
WIND in this video but did my best to tone it down
I'm an un-professional, professional horse and livestock educator trying to get conversations started in the most unbiased form I can. I think i'm pretty dope and a helpful tool for newcomers and those who don't understand certain concepts as a lot of other creators either assume or use too big of wordage to get their point across. When I'm not informing, I'm a hard core horse girl here to entertain ya'll with all the yee haw fun I can find in media, art, and other forms!

ugh taking out those hunks by hand has to be one of the most satisfying things in the whole world. i used to do this every chance i got for the dogs at a rescue where i worked and once even for a pet steer and some goats!! people think i'm crazy when i use my downtime to go brush out the animals

I for sure love doing that too! Especially at the clinic! This guys just sheds all at once so he seemingly looks like he's not well cared for in the vid but some of these clinic horses haven't seen a brush in a year. It's one of my favorite things to return a pretty horse back to their owners :)

I used to LOVE sitting on the front stoop with my Chessie mix and do his big shed comb when the weather got warm, before he got started on his flea and tick treatment for the summer. He had big fluffy buns thanks to the little bit of shepherd in him. I’d just pull tufts of fur from his butt/legs and let them fly. He LOVED being de-shedded! This reminds me of him because he was the exact same color as this horse!

We used to do this to my dog (with the curry comb) and we would call it "Chunking" because it was like chunks of fluffy under coat was coming off him. I always thought the birds would be happy with the new found insulation for their nests.

Just a question, does this old man have PPID/Cushing's?? Curious because if so, it would explain the length of hair/shedding pattern and tufting to anyone who might think hes neglected. My boy had Cushing's and shed out like this. Once he was shed out, he was sleek, but still had slightly longer hair than the average horse.

Old school upholstered and furniture makers still use horsehair batting in seat cushions... I don't know the exact methodology for collecting & washing & preparing it for sale, but is their a market for that near where you live? I bet there are many folks who'd love to know the name of the horse that contributed to their comfy seat 🤓

It could def look like Cushings but since this is a phenomenon that happens regularly (he sheds it all out within a week & a half) and has been checked out with full health, it is just a funky way to shed for him :)

Genuine question here! Did you stop brushing at his armpit area because it wouldn't work to pull out that bigger matted stuff? Or was it just a preference? Also, is that worn away hair on the top from sun? Or saddle? Or old age?
@BootypoppinPonies
@BootypoppinPonies 3 жыл бұрын
I just chose to pull it apart cuz it's a sensitive area and I didn't want there to be so much tension. And i'm not exactly sure what you meant about the hair BUT he's a really dusty horse if that's what you were talking about

It's not a brush. It's a device for getting closer down in the coat in order to remove all this loose hair. Needs to then be brushed well and the horse needs a bath. It obviously has been neglected.

@BootypoppinPonies

He has been dewormed and brushed, just not every single day (as another had previously argued as also being classified as neglect), but rest assured this horse is cared for regularly. Again, this is his normal shedding pattern and I wanted to share it with yall cuz it's both weird yet relaxing visual stimuli.

@paulettepena6711 the hair they pulled was already shed out, it was just hanging on with the other hair, dirt and dried sweat. They didn't actually rip the hair out from the horse's body.
