Despite their size and weight (about three times the weight of an average human) gorillas are superb tree-climbers. Here, Chimanuka, a silverback Grauer's Gorilla (Eastern Lowland) climbs a slender sapling then uses his weight to break it off deliberately because he had spotted an edible parasitic plant at the top. Chimanuka lives in the highland sector of Kahuzi-Biega National Park, DRC, and leads the biggest group that is visited by tourists - though tourism was suspended in March 2020 to protect the gorillas from the Covid-19 pandemic. This clip was filmed in 2015 while Gordon Buchanan and a BBC film crew were making 'The Gorilla Family and Me' for BBC2.
