Wow, I’ve been dipping in and out of the live feed from the Duluth harbour on KZfaq and your video came up as a suggestion. Very interesting, the woman from the US Army Corps of Engineers (?) was an excellent speaker and managed to tell her story without wasting any vocabulary-she was able to give a lot of information in such a concise way - she is certainly good at her job. Born and raised in Duluth; now living in NE Wisconsin, but the anticipation of watching ships arriving and departing remains. Many thanks for this video! Heavily mittened hands applauding the hardy souls who frolicked and filmed this one! Nicely done!

I enjoyed your video….nice job. I grew up in Duluth and left in 1969 after graduating from DAIT vocational school. Just a note….the green gates at the entrance to the breakwater were put up to prevent people from trying to get out to the lighthouse during a storm. The waves will actually go over the breakwater. Three brothers, the Halversons, drowned along with a coast guardsman during a bad storm. Nate was in some of my classes and I ate lunch with Eric and Arthur. This was at Woodland Jr high which I noticed last time in Duluth is not there anymore. All of them were on the swim team which shows how dangerous the current can be. Also, I grew up seeing the Edmond Fitzgerald and actually met the cook that was too ill with ulcers to make that voyage. I met him in Cape Coral Florida while working in his home.

The crewmembers waving (15.35) will be enjoying a fine meal at dinner time. The chefs on those ships are some of the best.

IMHO Ms. Baker has the best horn. Wished he would have given you a Master Salute not just the shorter Captains Salute. The canal cam is fun to watch specially during high wave activity and the crowds. Take care Thank you for the video.

Indeed the Barker almost always gives Master Salutes - to show off the biggest, baddest horn on the lakes.

You bring back memories of Lake Huron Jan 1994 when I joined a team constructing a tunnel under the St Clair River for CN Rail. The river and lake was frozen and from my riverside apartment later in the year I witnessed the first Laker of the season heading North. A tree was tied to the mast and the skipper wore a top hat. At the w/e I visited the lake and movement of shipping was causing a ripple effect that sounded like a steam train approaching. Now I grew up using steam trains as a kid and so the sound was so eerie but in a nice way. So thanks for reminding me.

Barker's Bark is the loudest in the entire great lakes. amazing feeling. i said that because i'm deaf. if i'm the first one on the bridge when driving i'll honk my horn at rythm to answer back and it worked couple of times. duluth is fun place to hang out.

RIP Gordon Lightfoot who died May 1st 2023. His beautiful ballad helps keep the memory of the 29 men who went down on the Mighty Fitz alive. He is a Canadian legend and icon. ✌️🇨🇦

Duluth is so awesome, i only go in the summer, been there 5 times. The waterfront is so interesting the tours and museums are so fun and historical. The railroad museum is pretty cool if you have a little knowledge about trains, took a ride on a 1930’s train. The harbor has dinner tour’s by boat, certainly enjoyed that!! Thanks for the video.

Anyone thinking of visiting Duluth, I suggest the South Pier Inn. It's as close to the bridge as possible, and right on the harbor. Very nice hotel, we enjoyed our stay. You can see it at 16:12 or so, the peaked roofs.

I'm 75 years young,when I was about 9 years old my older bro.his wife an baby,my mom and dad and another bro. Went on a fishing trip to Ontario lake nipogon I think it was.I still have 2 big stones ,about the size of a basket ball.they are egg shaped.I want to paint them to look like turtles.

They did find 1 body outside the wreck and in the debris field. I believe it was found in the 1990's on an expedition to the wreck and after that all dives were stopped except the one that retrieved the bell

In one certain you tube video about the wreck that I saw, there was a comment from someone who supposedly was a friend of one of the family members of one of the lost crewman. He said that the family members of the crewman had been told that during some of the official gov't dives to the wreck, that many of the other bodies had been seen in the wreck. And that the gov't had consulted with all the next of kin of the lost sailors and discussed the idea of recovering the bodies. And that the families had decided not to try recover the bodies, but to just leave the wreck as a gravesite. Whether that is true or not, I don't know. It certainly seems plausible.

There is much more to this story. Sadly the ones partially responsible were also the ones who made the wreck illegal to dive on for the truth. This left the insurance companies off the hook where only 29 checks in the amount of $600 each had to be cut. Peace/JT

This isn't all there is, and despite what we Minnesotans say winter really isn't its best season. I've always heard the Ozarks are pretty respectable scenery-wise (never been, so I won't compare directly), but come up and spend a week in the Boundary Waters and another week hanging around the Arrowhead (northeast part of MN that looks like a wedge), and then we'll see.
