Yeah I'm a righty. Where I fish (saltwater) you can get some good sized, fast moving fish on. Bull Trout, Coho, Ling Cod. When one of those starts swimming toward you, and you already have them on the reel, you need to take up line ASAP. I can do that much better with my right, beyond doubt. I've never lost a fish switching the rod from my right to left hand.

In Europe everyone reels with the left hand. Doesn’t matter if you’re right or left handed. Only time when I switched my retrieve is when I had a tennis arm injury and taught myself to cast with the left hand as I couldn’t even properly hold a bottle anymore so I had to stick with the hard work for my left arm.

I primarily used an open-face spinning outfit before learned to fly fishing (late 1960's) so started using my dominant hand to hold the fly rod and non dominant hand to reel- just as I did with my spinning outfits. My rule of thumb is if the real is underneath the rod, I use my non dominant hand to reel, but if the reel is above the rod (casting / trolling rods / closed face spin) I do the opposite. I agree, whatever is easiest / more natural when you start will serve you fine moving forward. Love the vids ... keep'm coming.

My take is that you hold the rod with your dominant stronger hand, thus you're using your stronger hand/arm to fight the fish enabling you to hold the fly rod more securely. I'm right handed, hold the rod with right, reel with left. My way is the right way................for me.

I learnt a while ago while fishing with an Alvey centerpin reel that winding with my strong hand (right) was the only way I could keep up with fish that make runs towards you. So the same applies with a fly reel - just try winding as fast with your non dominant hand and then with your strong hand and see which wins :)

I agree with Reid. Done properly almost no fish should die unless mishandled, gill hooked or gut hooked and even some of those can survive. On the other hand done improperly, and yanking hooks, dropping them, squeezing to hard, or keeping fish out of water too long for photos can increase their deaths dramatically. Also hands and nets should be wet before landing them. Good fishing to y’all!🎣

hey Ben, great video. I really appreciate your sense of humor! I reel left handed largely because I grew up spin fishing with the crank on the left. This feels right to me. I wish I could go both ways like you:) I have read that the right handed reel is preferred by Salmon and Steelhead fisherman because: if you spend all day casting with your right arm, when you finally get that one bite and hook into a hoss, you will need the strength of your left arm to land it.

If you spin fish, you can be much better at off-hand reeling. But then, I use a right-hand reeling baitcast because, when I flip and jig fish, it's hard to reel left. It has something to do with having the reel above vs. below the rod. For me, it makes a difference. I bought 2 baitcasters for left reel, and just couldn't use them even though not switching rod hands while flipping would be SUPER helpful.

After 40 years of reeling with my "non-dominant" hand, It has become my dominant reeling hand. So I have the best of both worlds. You are totally correct that it doesn't matter with the small fish that we catch 90% of the time. But I would never want to switch hands to reel in a Tarpon. That switch would usually happen about a split second after the first hook set. So I'm not feeling good about having to make that switch. And then, I gotta think about making additional hook sets with my non-dominant arm. No thanks. Tarpon are hard enough to hook already. But the point you made is, "do what works for you". Again, totally agree. But if I am teaching a newbie, I am probably going to teach them not to switch hands to reel. Liked this vid.

I've used my left hand to reel in ever since the first fixed spool reels that were available to me were lefthand only. That was about 65 years ago. The only good argument I've heard for reeling with your dominant hand is that, if you have a running fish, the reel handles are held away from your clothing and so won't catch on it.

As an Englishman, I had never seen anyone reeling with their dominant hand until I went to America. Nothing wrong with it I guess - a bit like what side of the road we drive on!

I’ve been casting with my right and reeling with my left for 50+ years. Reel with whichever hand you want, there is no right or wrong.

Ben, awesome channel, love your videos. I have to tell you, though, you need to up your game with the beer you drink. Come on out to the Midwest, I will show you around The Driftless area, we’ll catch some fish, and I will and turn you on to some awesome craft beer. The invitation is always open!
