The fact that he didn't cleaned the motherboard with an old toothbrush or blasted it with air.. kinda'... bugs me..

The one thing I would do as an extra step is to really clean up the motherboard, just to make sure it is squeaky clean. You already put a lot of time and effort into restoring this Macbook.

I did exactly what this guy did when replacing an LCD in one of these, it halves to cover the entire glass in packing tape so glass shards don't get everywhere. Also works with iPads and phones.

There is a glitch issue for about 7 seconds at 6:45, it is an issue on KZfaqs end as the original file doesn't have the issue. No idea why it occurred but regardless enjoy the video. Also for those who thought I didn't clean the logic board, I did but I removed the clip from the video when editing. I didn't leave it as it was at the beginning but in saying that I didn't make it spotless anyway much better than it was. :)

Dude, use some protective gloves when you open so old dirty MBPs! You can catch some nasty fungus.

when you need to clean a motherboard or logic board, dunk it in a bucket of isoprol alcohol . swish it around dry it off for a few minutes and it's clean as new

It's a bit like saying "I've restored this old broom and I've only had to replace the handle and broom head"

Great restoration, I can see why you went for replacing the frame and other components since the old frame was in such rough condition. Also nice customizations! Though a couple of the ports and the motherboard could have been cleaned a bit better, the RAM could do with being upgraded to 8GB, and I'd have personally installed OS X 10.11 instead of 10.9. A lot of programs now, even Google Chrome and Spotify, require OS X 10.11 or better.

Hey Hugh, I actually own this exact MacBook Pro Model. I have some suggestions regarding Motherboard and Fan Cleaning, along with Display Removal Safety: - Motherboard Cleaning - If you cannot use a Supersonic Cleaner, grab a Toothbrush or dusting brush that is NOT abrasive and use that in conjunction with a dust blower hand tool/aerosol can gently to remove a lot more of the dust. Also, don't be afraid to use 91% Alcohol. - The Fan - I dunked my fan into a tub of 91% alcohol while keeping the cables outside. I then used a toothbrush and hairdryer on low to blow out the liquids and let it out to dry for 20+ minutes on a microfiber cloth. It looks nice and clean and has been that way for 5+ months! - The Glass Removal - Again, I said this back in the Galaxy video, Use Playing cards, gloves (which I though you did this time), and Tape to protect yourself and keep the glass from shattering and to remain in one removable piece. I would recommend cleaning the remaining parts with a soft toothbrush and use alcohol to clean the CPU heatsink. It's best to not smear thermal paste, as you don't want any dust or contamination in the paste. Use the pea method. Ok now I feel better.

The way you installed the thermal paste is more than fine mate! When I first built my PC I only had a small packet up manufacturer supplied stuff, and I spread it across the top with a razor blade. I didn't even cut myself with the blade, I cut myself on the IO shield though...

If you're looking at purchasing a macbook I would definitely recommend preowed or refurbished as you will get much more for your money. I bought a 2013 i5 air in 2015 for 300 AUD. It still works perfectly now even after daily use for years. I've never had to replace and the only repair I've done is removing dust from the fans.

As a builder and Tech enthusiast, I found this restoration almost beautiful... Except the part where the board/fans/cables weren't blown out with Compressed air and cleaned with Alcohol. Also, while it's not STRICTLY necessary to spread the paste out [pressure will do that] either way is acceptable [except that huge piece of hair stuck to your spudger while spreading >.> Don't contaminate the paste :P Yeah, I'm nitpicking. . sue me. .but overall I really enjoyed watching this ^^

I run a similar laptop. I like being able to play a DVD if I want; though I’m sure that dates me. I gave 16 Gb of ram in mine; I don’t recall the processor speed but it’s the top processor/GOU combo and the last laptop with a SuperDrive. I have a 1 Gb Samsung 950 Evo that makes this fun as well as a newer machine. I have a few Mac and while I bought new at one point find much more value in used systems; you also benefit from knowing any problems that have arisen, like keyboards, that you don’t know on new machines. Macs seem to hold up and age better then other systems; I’m glad to see you bringing things back in these days of throw away tech.

i thought the logic board was left out to be saved for the last part by cleaning it...all that trouble and new parts and you did not even clean it...a simple small brush would do

For anyone that is wondering how much it costs (from ifixit website): 1)Battery $95 2)Ssd $170 3)Case (upper and bottom) $100 4)Clutch cover $10 5)Display glass $50 Total: $425 + $100 = $525 (add also the time that you would need to make this restoration happen) $700 (at least) not worth it.

First thing's first, cotton swabs and high content rubbing alcohol, my friend. Good for cleaning up components and the old thermal compound. You can also use an antistatic brush as many other restorers do to remove the dust from the board. Second, spreading out the thermal compound by hand is actually far more likely to create air voids in it, which will result in future heat problems. Just center your blob on the chip die or heatsink and let it do the rest as it seats itself.
