I'm pretty sure Hulk is the alter ego that Bruce always had, the angry Bruce that protected him from all the shit his dad and other bullies gave him as he grew up and was made to a real person after the gamma accident. Perhaps the calm was a bit of real-Bruce getting a look at his father the way he remembered him through the shell of truth the Hulk bore for him.

2:47 The Hulk is this. Hes not just a big green smashing thing. Hes a combination and a product of all the abuse and repression someone holds down for their entire life. The hulks whole arc as a character is a meditation on what anger can do to you psychologically. And since everyone likes deep dark depictions of comic characters, I have a feeling that if the cgi were a bit updated and it were released now, it wouldve done better.

@thepermanentshockedface9177

@Jeremy Schafer I full heartedly agree with you. The thing which bothered me a lot was how the critics complained about the movie of Hulk 2003 being too long, and the acting being too monotonous which I heavily disagree upon. Ang Lee crafted a movie with heart and seriousness because the hulk isn't a joke. The reason why we don't see more hulk movies is because Hollywood can't cater it to a full audience.. They want to be able to introduce the movie to kids when that idea goes against who and what the hulk is. Edward Norton's hulk movie was great in the sense that it showcased the Horror aspects of the hulk, from the music and the beast like nature of him. Of course that movie came out how it did from how much he involvement he put but when it came time for the sequel, they dropped him because he was "too difficult to work with". I know I'm going off topic a little but thats an example of how Hollywood don't give a shit about making a movie that people will remember, rather they'd dumb down characters just so kids can have a laugh. We all may have different sense of humour and some humour is good for the movie but completely transforming the hulk into a JOKE is unforgivable.. The hulk is tragedy incarnate and everything he touches is destoryed.
@thepermanentshockedface9177
@thepermanentshockedface9177 4 жыл бұрын
@Jeremy Schafer it's horrible honestly. I sat through Avengers Endgame without feeling little emotion while the theater was full of tears with the ending. It didn't hit me how I wanted because the movie kept taking me out with jokes and lack of seriousness.... Anime can make me cry more than any MCU movie did. The ending to the Hulk almost made me tear up because as we saw with the ending after Bruce's father died, he remembered one of the few wholesome memories which was his dad kissing him and saying "sweet dreams". Eventhough he hated his dad, he still held on to those memories. Small things like that is what makes a character so beautifully portrayed. Critics be damned too because we know the movie was way ahead of its time and not to mention the hypocrisy of the review. The main issue with them was the movie being too long but the incredible Hulk movie was around the same length yet they praised it. I'm guessing because it had more action? It goes to show these critics know fuck all about real movies and character. The incredible Hulk may have had better action but lacked character depth and emotional weight.

I don't think we realize sometimes how deep this scene is for Hulk. Bruce didn't know David as he was, didn't even recognize him. David had to tell him, convince him. HULK, being the subconscious persona. Not only remembered David by sight, but he recalled other occasions leading up to Edith's death, entire memories with his Father. Something Bruce couldn't do due to the split and or refused to do. When Hulk freaks out, he chose to leave in frustration, instead of killing him right there. Showing there's still some kind of attachment on Hulk's part to David, inner conflict, anger. He's not the mindless beast i thought he was when i was a kid, it's insane how much characterization he gets here vs All the Avengers movies put together. Not being a smartass, i'm dead serious, all 4 put together. *THIS Hulk has more depth, deadass.*

This scene is just perfect. It really encapsulates that horrific monster within Bruce. The visual anger shown by Banna is so good. Not only is it showing all that repressed anger and that of holding back his childhood trauma only then do you get to see the hulk “break out” because of that. Bruce is trying to hold it back but that only makes the hulk want to break out more. This is how you should portray the hulks transformation as this isn’t a comfortable thing to go through as are a lot of our repressed memories but one way or another that anger could manifest into some horrific things.

Genuinely love this movie to this day. Sure, it can be too dramatic at times, but the fact that Ang and co really focused on Banners childhood trauma and turmoil makes this the film that stays the most true to his character, especially if you loved and integrate Peter David's work in the comics. This first transformation still unsettles me to this day. Absolutely underrated Hulk in my opinion. Would be really cool to see this version brought back somehow.

Due to his father's "super immune system" experiments in Bruce and the memories suppressed during his childhood, Bruce own mind managed to manifest the gamma radiation into a "Backdoor" for Bruce to survive the gamma blast. The amount of detail of sweat and water on the pores of his skin is actually still pretty impressive by today’s standards. ILM did an amazing job for 2003. I think that while the proportions of his design may be a bit less humanistic than the 2008 & 2012-> hulks, the way he moves and the textures of his skin at certain moments rival the newer ones. What Ang Lee and the Vfx team capture perfectly in this scene in particular is the lighting.

@@dead0ntime Indeed. People forget that Thanos has the ability to manipulate "cosmic" energy. That is power on an insanely HIGHER level. Even without the gauntlet Thanos is still crazy powerful. You saw him breathing and surviving the vacuum of space in the movies (end of the first one) and that is not even close to his full range of abilities. I love the Hulk and have been a fan of him for years but Thanos is still on a higher platform in terms of raw power. Thanos is also a brilliant fighter and tactician among other things (he is old, more experienced). I would like to see the Hulk beat him down, but not gonna happen. Hulk is an "Earth" based hero where as Thanos can live among the stars.

I think the 2008 film's Jekyll and Hyde take on the Character was also amazing. This movie went with a Frankenstein view and the '08 film went for the Hulk being Banner's Hyde persona. Both films had sensational main villains in hindsight. I loved both Nick Nolte and Tim Roth, they were both great. Especially how the villainous origin story played out over the entire film both times. I think both Hulk movies from '03 and '08 are soooo underrated.

I think this film is better than its reputation suggests. It's nothing outstanding, but every performance is solid. The visual effects range from pretty good, especially for its time, to meh and occasionally bad. It can be a bit dull, but it's never frustrating or annoying to watch like a lot of films now. It's fascinating in its uniqueness, how quietly introspective it is, especially in the current climate of superhero movies. Props to Ang Lee for trying something different here. Also, minor tidbit, but I love the fact that Ang Lee performed the motion capture for the Hulk himself.

The DP was Frederick Elmes, same cinematographer who filmed Lynch's Blue Velvet.

@@wizoz9778 Yes, by all means, try to see "Blue Velvet." It's Lynch, the characters are odd, but the story is pretty straight forward.

EXACTLY that’s exactly why you can’t take the new hulk seriously you can’t feel the anger in him like you can with this hulk and the movie tone makes this hulk more serious.

It also helps hide the limited technological range of the effect, things harsh desert sunlight unfortunately don't do.

Ang Lee really respected the Hulk unlike Kevin Feige.

2003 and 2008 hulks are the best Hulks to ever exist. The thing that went wrong with Avengers is they didn’t get Bana or Norton

They honestly couldn’t figure out how to make a disturbing dark marvel character fit in with everyone else. Hulk is a Wolverine/Deadpool/punisher/ghost rider/etc… type of character and they just made him like a little too heroic/peaceful

Eric Bana playing hulk was very frustrating for him because by what he said “You go from ‘Black Hawk Down’ where you’re shooting mainly daytime, exteriors, natural light. Boom: out in the world. To suddenly, I’m playing a scientist and I’m in a lab or a house, indoors. “There’s this other movie going on with green screen that I have nothing to do with, because that’s the Hulk. It’s the other actors that are playing in that space. So in some ways it felt like a tiny movie because the reality for me was every day was interior, studio, one room, very few big scenes. Lots of dialogue. I don’t like working indoors.” so after doing hulk he pretty much refuse to play hulk again after that and for Edward Norton’s Hulk the reason why he did not return for hulk was because he "wanted more diversity" with his career, and did not want to be associated with only one character. So Norton did not hate the role just didn’t want to get stuck with one character.

Bana was so good at potraying that bottled up anger exploding. This film is very underrated.

Makes me wonder if Bruce was still somewhat in control since he didn’t one shot his pops. He knew exactly who that was too and he just left and let him live. Or maybe Hulk himself has morals. Hmm

Hulk remembers Bruce’s dad accidentally killing Bruce’s Mom which is why he shrugged from him.
