Blade Length: 3.6 inches
Steel: Unknown Japanese Carbon Steel (58-60 HRC)
Thickness: 3mm
Handle: Polypropylene
Sheath: Polypropylene
Made In: Sweden
Price: $11 (Amazon)
The GK is the heavy duty model in Hultafor's line of knives. It is heavier, thicker, and wider than their other knives, with a larger handle, too.
PS - I have been told that the carbon steel is Japanese SK5

I bought one of these a couple of years ago and was really impressed; I have large hands and its by far the most comfortable knife I own for bushcraft, or any task where you need to have a really solid grip with all your fingers, not just choking up on the poll. I took it to work and abused it pretty heavily; chiseling out studs doing formwork and hammering the back edge of the knife to cut through chamfer, I was so impressed at how much abuse it took! i pounded on this thing and it is so damn strong, the end of the handle is also shaped like the butt of a chisel so its strong enough to be driven through a log/oysters/whatever. Mine also came with a Scandi grind and not the edge profile shown here.

I got one of these Hultafors heavy duty green handled knives for nephew, as he is really interested in bushcraft and hiking (probably because of Bear Grylls), it only cost £4, along with this knife, I got him some cheap basic equipment and some spare stuff of mine I no longer use, so if it was a short lived fad, all is not lost, a fortune wasn't wasted. When the knife arrived, I had a little lookski, as you do, you gotta inspect that knife, after holding it in my hands for a few minutes. I then immediately went online and ordered myself one. Fantastic knife, don't think you can get better for the price. Tho it will never replace my custom made buscrafter (it's made for my hand and a fine bit of craftmanship), it is however similar to and comparable to a Mora Clipper, and that alone is high praise.

Hultafors stainless steel is Japanese Aichi AUS-8 steel (roughly equivilant to AISI 440B) and the Carbon steel is Japanese Nishin SK-5 (roughly equivilant to AISI 1080). Both are hardened to about HRC ~ 58.

I just received my knife in the mail, and the blade is shorter then I thought. It feels great in the hand. The blade is hair popping shape out of the box and very beefy blade. I have large hands and the handle works grate. It feels heaver then any othere blade that I have in its size range. This knife would be the perfect bugout knife, or hunting knife. Not to sure about the belt loop it does not look like it will work well if at all. This would be great for a backpacking or camping trip. For the price you cant to wrong.

i hultafors heavy duty gk, hvk and hvk gh, I also have mora bushcraft black, hultafors are extremely good and robust knives and low priced which upgrades them excelent knives !!! mora of course is a very good robust knife (including an anti corrosion coat which will be partialy removed after some use, a ferro rod and diamond sharpening placket inlaid on the sheath, other than this the sheath is almost the same as the hultafor's). But the mora bushcraft black is lot more expensive between 60-70 usd if I remeber well, though hultafors cost about 10 usd and still the comfortable handless, the blades and sharpness are practically the same as moras. There is a utube video where a guy put insane abuse on hultafor hvk and it's just amazing the way it holds up!!!

One important point- only the Hultafors has a secondary bevel. The other two have a true Scandi grind, which some think is way better for slicing. There is a vid on You Tube from a chap called The Man Cave where he shaves his beard with a Maura. That's pretty sharp...

Ahh, I see, mrmalinois already commented on the steel, so I would just like to add one more thing, that is important: Hultafors, just like Mora knives are priced the same in Europe as in the US. This is nice when your other options are $160 BK-7-s and $20 folders sold for $50-$60. (And this 2-2.5x ratio goes for pretty much every other knife too :-( )

Got mine yesterday. The grind was embarrassing and the edge was dull. I put a convex edge on this knife and it brought it up to Mora standards. I wouldn't recommend this knife when dollar for dollar the Mora Robust is a better knife out of the box. Martini's are nice but IMO feel very cheap in hand but are the sharpest out of the box than all three. 1. Robust 2. Hultafors 3. Martini
@WeAllJuggleKnives
@WeAllJuggleKnives 8 жыл бұрын
+Myk Ford Yeah I've gotten some bad edges on Hultafors, too. On their website, they say they finish each edge with a leather strop. Mine definitely wasn't. I just assumed that they shipped off the factory seconds to America or something, maybe we get the less finished ones, but I was still oaky with it for the price.

To get an idea of what it takes to break one of these knives (as in the cheap Scandinavian knives) check out this destruction series: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aNNheM2oybHUqGw.html He tests the Hultafors HVK, the lighter knife with a 2.5mm thick blade. In the fourth and fifth vid he drives it into a tree and stands on it with the blade spine up and the with the blade sideways. He also stands on the handle with about an inch of blade between the handle and the tree... it took the weight and didn't snap, and it wasn't even the heavy duty! LOL So yeah, for the money these little knives are some mean bastards! Makes sense though as they are made for tradesmen, and few are harder on their tools. These things are almost indestructible and nearly free. lol

@SignedSign
@SignedSign 9 жыл бұрын
the hultafors handles are more robust than the mora handles, you can hit a hultafors handle with a steel hammer without any risk of it breaking or getting messed up, if you do the same to a mora handle that is much harder plastic then it will soon crack, however, the steel of the blade is better in the moras than in hultafors. if they combined hultafors handle with a mora blade then they would have the ultimate cheap knife that would last forever.
@ike780
@ike780 9 жыл бұрын
+SignedSign I watched a destruction test between the two and the hultifors gk handle warped a little under heavy stress while the mora robust remained intact. The hultifors looks more robust but I'd say for material quality the mora is likely to be better.
@SignedSign
@SignedSign 9 жыл бұрын
Isaac Monteleone Lets put it this way, I use both moras and hultafors at work doing construction and I totally abuse my knifes in ways that would make you cringe, I use them as crowbars, beating them with steel hammers etc, and the hultafors handles are way more robust than the moras of the simple fact that they are made in a softer material that can absorb the abuse, while the moras are in a hard plastic that shatter when it reach its breaking point. And I've totally shattered several mora knife handles, while I have yet to brake a hultafors handle by hitting it with a steel hammer. Learnt by several years of experience, not by watching movies.

www.hultafors.co.uk/products/cutting/knives/craftsmans-knives/heavy-duty-knife-gk/ homepage for the knife, in English, choose other like French or German etc..upper right hand corner. They make axes too. I myself have the HVK-model and I am very pleased with it. The G in the name stands for "Grov" meaning thick, coarse or robust, K is for "Kniv" which surprise! means knife but like in olden English the k is not silent. "Fors" in the name is pronounced like "Force" in English but like gorse in the end i.e. "Forse". Their plumbers knife have an file on the blade. If you have been living in a cave all your life I can tell you that Swedish knives and axes are good, Fällkniven, Mora, Hultafors. Wetterlings, Gränsfors Bruks, there are good Finnsh knives "Puuko" picture google it and if you want tactical "Ranger Puukko" the sheath is incredible it will hold the knife upside down no straps Hyvä on.
