Human Safari: Observing the Jarawa

Tourists on India's Andaman Islands are taken by the busload to watch the Jarawa tribe go about their daily lives. The Jarawa are treated like animals in a safari park, with large signs urging visitors not to feed them or give them clothing. Earlier this year, a crew from VICE Germany went to the Andaman Islands and brought back footage for this fascinating, if a bit depressing, documentary.
Human Safari was produced with assistance from the non-profit Survival International. Learn more about supporting the campaign for the Jarawa here: www.survivalinternational.org/...

+Indian Storm in Ecuador at least, the uncontacted tribes we have are truly uncontacted. They do suffer from shrinking space, but at least there is no tours that treat them condescendingly. That being said, I think that if rules were actually enforced (no pictures, no pollution, actual guides offering explanations as opposed to "hey throw biscuits at dem wild lil dudes and make dem dance") and they tried to avoid them on the roads, then no one would complain.

natishamonique910 Very true, the same thing is happening to the Masai. Africans are strikingly beautiful, yet Europeans often don't know where to say no to that greedy fascination and show appreciation with love and respect. For those who say that people watch - don't be naive. Most Big Brother celebrities are fame hungry self absorbed nothings who will do everything to be admired. Those people weren't given a choice. It's like raping someone and then blaming them for being in the way.

The subtitles are often extremely inaccurate. In the beginning, when the announcement is saying "do not overtake vehicles ahead of you on the road" at 0:24, the subtitle says stuff about prohibitions on giving food. Later, at 2:27, the lady says, "we get to take them (the tourists) on tours" ... subtitle says "they bring money". I understand this is a minor issue, but it's a documentary, so please, please make sure such obvious errors do not make it through to the final production. On a more important note, observing non-Western people as if they are animals is an age old tradition. It's obvious even today in the productions under the banners like BBC, Nat Geo, etc. And this video is not an exception. The shot where a chicken is lifted up from a cage, for example, has nothing to do with the story, but it succeeds in presenting a certain picture of Kolkata to those who have never been there: a mosque and a chicken about to be killed! Wow ... the likes of Eisenstein are turning in their graves! Completely irrelevant to the story, but completely relevant to the colonial mindset from which none of these organizations (including Vice, albeit to a much lesser extent) have severed themselves.
@moondog7694
@moondog7694 4 жыл бұрын
How is showing a mosque the same as portraying the people who live in the same city as where the mosque is located "portraying them as animals"? Animals don't attend religious institutions, so I don't see how you think attending church or synagogue is somehow animalistic. Same as lifting up a chicken. Humans eat chicken. Should they have shown the Kolkata woman lifting up some kale or wheatgrass? Animals eat those plants too. There are many herbivorous animals, like horses, rabbits, and elephants. A documentary film crew came to Vancouver and did a film about gentrification, and whenever they filmed white pedestrians on sidewalks, the white people were always walking dogs! Do you not think that is stereotyping and othering?

I am from the Islands , the main reason why people are not allowed to see the jarawa are because they have been abused since indipendence 1947. The british left the islands , indian government came , so more indians migrated there . These Indians always associated the jarawas as cannibals and all kinds of shit. This continues for years then the government places new rules to protect the jarawa , these jarawas arent aware of how government works or the functionality of a modern world . They try to blend in to be safe , started wearing proper clothing etc. The main problem for the jarawas is the road which passes through their territory. the place is very quiet until 430 am then the cars and busses rush in for mostly tourists and some amount for the other habitants . People should learn to respect the culture of the tribe and let them be and not ruin their indigenous lifestyle.

The Jarawa were mostly wiped out in genocides by Danes and the British. The British in the 30’s did nazi style medical experiments on them. Now american christians bother them. As for poachers, it’s obviously chinese smugglers since they eat pigs. The jarawa are not animals. They need to integrate and mix because inbreeding will destroy them anyway since they can never recover from genocide. So, stop treating them like zoo animals on some nature reserve!

These people are the closest living things to our ancestors. 60,000 years was when human migration from Africa began. These are the people with whom lies the primitive human language and traditions of the first humans. They need to protected at all costs but also studied. Nothing wrong with that. i have been there when i was 13 yrs old and never knew that this is such a serious issue. Lemme tell you , everyone just want to see them and count how many of them they see, even our group members threw breads, and stuff to them , and tribes see us holding their own made weapon. There area is so beautiful you can see some of the places where they have made special baskets for birds, but seriously they should be leaved untouched, they are very few. Many were of them have started wearing clothes which was not there culture, they have our snacks and it's sad but even i feel we are going to loose them soon it nothing happened serious soon. Administration only stops private vehicles only when its out of 8 hour period . You never feel how precious they are even i never thought that until i was on internet and heard and watched documentaries. and yes it's 2017 and this situation is same. I am never going there and definitely spread this important thought among my all relatives 'cause people still take them as a entertainment sources.

In my conversations with the locals, Jarawa's frequently are in contact with them, sometimes visit eateries and are let to eat for free. I have also seen Jarawa's wearing cotton shorts obviously sourced from the civilised world. It isn't as remote as this video projects it to be. A counter argument would be that though some of us want to protect them by keeping them to themselves and not mingling with the 'civilised' world, it serves as an attraction to us that there is a remote tribe still on earth. If we let nature have it's course, it's quite natural that they will eventually mingle with us, like whole of the races have. It's our own vanity to 'protect' them.

I agree but I think they should have a choice and the only way to provide that choice is for their home to be protected and private not exploited as a tourist attraction. Yes the tribe on north sentinel island might be right to be more aggressive to outsiders. I’m glad that no germ has wiped out these people. I do think it’s condescending to romanticize them being wild and free when they have no modern medicine etc it’s a complicated situation.

This video is VERY VERY misleading. I have been to the Andamans and the Andaman Trunk Road. The government of India does not provide or support these so-called Human Safaris. The truth is the Andamans are divided into North, Middle and South. The capital Port Blair is in South and Diglipur, a major city, is in the North. The Jarawa Tribe region is in Middle Andaman,sandwiched in between these two. Being an archipelago the major cities are connected by sea routes. But then the sea routes are not always reliable due to weather conditions, commercially not viable for the small businesses neither can it be used as a mass public transport system. The government thus made the Andaman Trunk Road. This single two-lane road of ATR is the one and only land based public transport system connecting the two biggest commercial hubs of the Andaman islands. And it is not at all that anyone with a car can drive on it. There are certain protocols to be followed. The buses or cars are taken in batches. They have to have prior permissions. They are escorted by police officials in the front and the back. No photography and no stopping until the buses have reached a checkpoint that is outside the Jarawa region. Mind you, a steady speed of 40km/hr , no stopping whatsoever, no cameras and always under police escort. The 70% of the ATR users are actually localites going about their jobs or visiting their families. Tourists are a far minority as the major tourist regions are actually the islands around Port Blair especially Havelock. The chances of actually seeing a Jarawa is very very slim. The bus in which I was going was carrying more than 100 passengers and only 4 people (including my brother) actually saw a Jarawa father and son, the father was carrying a spear. You know why the rest did not see them, because they were SLEEPING!!!. Yes a huge majority were not even interested in the Jarawa tribe. Reason is they were actually localites and simply very tired considering it was a long journey. If you want to abandon the ATR consider the economic ramifications it can have on Andaman economy. Going by the attitude of this video it seems they are against tourism itself in Andaman. I assure you 90% of all tourism is concentrated in the Port Blair and Havelock island regions where there are no indigenous tribe. The garbage and corruption shown in this video is unfortunately true in every part of Indian cities including Delhi and Mumbai. But this unjustified blame put on Andaman Trunk Road or the notion that government of India provides Human Safari tours is completely bullshit.
