... This story is SO HUMAN! We do literally tend to make anything that which would hunt us either go extinct or become a part of the family. Both cats and dogs our two favorite pets are descended from carnivores that used to hunt human's. Other carnivores are either extinct or have evolved to not hunt humans. We suck compared to any animal our own size, slower, weaker, weaker senses, no natural weapons, and yet still we overcome anything that is out to kill us. The only exceptions are lifeforms too small to be seen with the naked eye we only recently figured out cause disease (we have organizations that are supposed to be hunting them.) and other humans (we have complex 'justice' systems intended to hunt those.) Our bloodthirstiness is second to none, and yet we also have this bizarre psychological quirk, even though by all accounts we should be prey we tend to form odd bounds with predators. We have an odd habit of taking on some of the worst predators as pets and companions. Even in the area of exotic animal's people tend to like predators. Snakes, lizards, spiders, even piranha. It's like the bigger their teeth the more adorable humans tend to think of them. It makes sense in our odd psychology, but still in the catalogues of animal behaviors humans are utterly unique in this regard.

It's worth noting among the Earth's predators humans are near the top in terms of physical endurance and match that with enormous climate tolerance. A fit human can quite literally run animals down till they die of exhaustion. We can do so day and night from the tundra to the tropics. As for natural weapons, we do have one, and it's one of the best: we can accurately throw most things and that which isn't good for throwing we're equally well equipped to hold. The world is full of sharp rocks and pointy sticks.

I understand what you mean by unique, because of the scale of our current success, but several animal species are primed for easy symbiosis, either with special species that have certain characteristics or with anything that is friendly- capybaras, rabbits, cats (they will mother almost any mammal that is small or vulnerable enough), parrots (they like to mimic sounds or accents), dolphins appreciate intelligence and hate porpoises as unintelligent parallels to themselves but like humans sometimes. There are several more examples but those are the most "obvious" that I can think of.

Most other species in this type of story are derived from herbivores or some type of prey ancestors race, so pack bonding with an apex predator isn't something that would come naturally to them, besides instincts and primal fears would also get in the way of non-predatorial and pack oriented species as even humans had fear with firts contact. Plus, other species already did try, point it out by narator, so I will say sheer luck too as well. We mighty human will pack bond with anything and everything we find interesting or cute 😂

Most of the HFY genre strikes me as a self-congratulatory circlejerk courtesy of barely-literate Reddit s**humans who can't make it up two flights of stairs without a sweaty, heaving break and an emotional support iguana. That said, however, the idea that humans, of all goddamn species, would be the ones rarted enough to look at some borderline-Lovecraftian nightmare of a social predator and collectively decide "OMG SPACE KITTIES" makes *way* too much sense.

Was interesting approaching this story. What makes it believable is my knowledge of mules and animals. Mules will not work for owner and slave relationship. Mules, for instance,, If you have respect for the mule, it will respect you you must have a partnership between the two of you. The mule will save your life over and over again, and be as loyal as you can have anything upon this earth. They do not do well with dominance at all.. cats or another animal that do not do well with dominance.
